Background / History

Aleister was born Edward Alexander Crowley into a devout Christian family. She attended church school, studied the Bible, and was originally expected to follow that faith. Something during that period caused her to reject Christianity; before attending Cambridge, she discarded her baptismal identity and took the name Aleister. 400

While at Cambridge, Aleister pursued occultism without systematic training and lived a highly indulgent life. Her encounter with Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers brought her into the Golden Dawn and formally introduced her to magic. Mathers recognized her talent, personally taught her, and secured her admission despite objections from other members. 400 773

Aleister later destroyed the Golden Dawn by exploiting the conflict between the Mathers and Westcott factions. After the factions had weakened one another, she used the stolen Spirit Tool Imagine Breaker to kill Mathers and appropriated much of the organization’s research, combining it with her own work to establish the framework of modern magic. 390

Her eldest daughter Lilith’s death became the defining motive behind her war against magic and Demon Gods. Aleister blamed the magical world and Phase-related distortions for making Lilith’s survival impossible, abandoning any larger ideal in favor of revenge against the system that had taken her child. 3 410

In 1919, Aleister encountered Roy in the Imaginary Phase after Roy completed The Book of Law. Mistaking him for an enemy who could expose her location, she attacked with her strongest formula and only recognized him as her son after killing him. She abandoned her plans, returned to Britain to search for her children, and spent twenty-eight years hunted by magicians before being gravely wounded in 1947. 4

After being saved by Soul of the Underworld, Aleister traveled to Japan and eventually established Academy City. There, she concealed herself in the Building with No Doors or Windows, using its life-support system to hide her life wavelength while directing the city through surveillance and layered contingency plans. 4 400 760

Aleister is intensely pragmatic, cautious, and willing to use deception, ambushes, theft, and manipulation rather than seek a fair fight. Her self-imposed curse convinced her that every plan would fail, leading her to build extensive backup plans and escape routes into virtually everything she does. 409 760

Beneath her calculated exterior, Aleister is driven by unusually intense emotions. She values money, pleasure, power, and personal desire, but her strongest attachment is to family. Lilith’s death redirected her entire life, while her failures toward Roy and Laura leave her burdened by guilt and remorse. 3 728 760
