Background / History

Squid Girl is the monarch of a Deep Sea Region and its marine life. Other deep-sea creatures regard her as terrifying; Andrea warns Lucia that merely calling her “Squid Girl” could cause an uproar among the region’s monsters. Although she and Lance had fought over trying to eat one another in the past, their comparable strength allows them to negotiate and coexist as equals. 52 53 55

Lance first visits her waters intending to buy a tentacle for Lucia to eat. Squid Girl is curious about the Human World and repeatedly asks Lance to take her there, even offering tentacles from other squid as gifts. Lance refuses at first, believing her appetite and unfamiliarity with human rules would make people, livestock, and property potential targets. 51 54 55

While Lance is away, Squid Girl occupies Black Dragon Island and devours its fruit, vegetables, and crops. Lance confronts and defeats her in the deep sea, leaving her reduced to a smaller form; afterward, he threatens to make her plow his fields during the next spring. He nevertheless teaches her to prepare Takoyaki, grilled squid, skewers, and grilled vegetables. 79 82 83

She later enters the Human World under Lance’s supervision and sells Takoyaki in Saint Blue Plaza to repay debts caused by her eating livestock. Her literal announcement that she was “selling legs” frightens customers when she demonstrates that her severed tentacles rapidly regrow, though Lance covers for her by claiming the ingredients come from her pet octopus.
