Background / History
Karl was captured by Mind Flayers at age fourteen and implanted with a tadpole. The creature could not properly process the memories of Karl’s past life, whose world lacked magic and followed fundamentally different rules. Karl ultimately absorbed its psionic energy rather than being replaced by it 1 6.
He awakened during the destruction of a Mind Flayer transformation facility and escaped his pod before it was crushed. Refusing to abandon other prisoners, he used his artificer knowledge to free seven captives, including Hopp, a Tiefling Barbarian who became his closest companion 2 3. The two were subsequently trapped in a dungeon demiplane for months before returning to the Prime Material Plane 252 416.
Karl’s knowledge of artificing, construction, metallurgy, and his former world allowed him and Hopp to survive in the dungeon. He made shelter, tools, kilns, carts, weapons, enchanted items, and eventually Arcane Power Armor, while using the Dream World to train and develop designs beyond his normal limitations 10 16 30 35.
After returning home, Karl resumed his studies at Arcanix and became Morban’s disciple. He passed the Tower of the Artificer’s practical examination by creating a rapid-fire rune rifle, helped modernize his father Ryan’s weapons factory, and designed new firearms and production methods 101 104 105.
His later expeditions through Stormreach Bay, Xi'endrick, the Plane of Air, and Giant ruins expanded both his technological base and psionic abilities. Contact with the Eternal Furnace granted him Giant-derived knowledge and caused orange-gold patterns to spread across his body 331 340 342.
Karl developed direct psionic control over constructs, a capability Elise identifies as the basis of a potential new Artificer sub-class. He later formalized this research as the Psionic Hacker path 304 415. By age twenty-one, he is known as its pioneer and serves as an honorary technical advisor to Eldren and Aundair 419.
Appearance
Karl has red hair and orange irises. His body changes significantly after contact with the Eternal Furnace, including a rapid increase in height and the emergence of orange-gold patterns across his chest, limbs, and torso 340 342.
- Measured approximately two meters tall after his initial transformation, having previously been around 1.9 meters 342.
- Bears a Scouting Dragon Mark, first appearing as an unfamiliar scar-like pattern on his back 19 20.
- Develops orange-gold body patterns resembling those on the Adamantine Key 342.
- A psionic-magic experiment briefly reveals a possible altered form over 2.6 meters tall, with additional organs and a plate-like skeleton 342.
- Frequently appears in custom Arcane Power Armor or his larger mech during combat 65 325.
Personality
Karl is inventive, practical, and intensely driven by the urge to turn ideas into usable technology. He approaches survival problems as engineering challenges, whether building a kiln from dungeon materials, upgrading a family factory, designing firearms, or creating infrastructure for demiplanes 16 35 105 126.
He is protective of companions and initially risks his own escape to rescue prisoners he has never met. This protectiveness remains a defining trait in later conflicts, where he prioritizes evacuating allies or buying them time against stronger enemies 2 327 418.
Karl can also be impulsive, arrogant, and ruthless. He purchases unknown living substances out of curiosity, activates dangerous projects without warning his companions, and kills enemies he judges to be deceptive or future threats rather than prolonging negotiations 163 324 400. His confidence grows with his power, particularly when confronting the Golden Power Society 410.
Despite his past-life knowledge, Karl is conscious of his own limitations. He recognizes that he was not an exceptional student at Arcanix, relies on training and experimentation to compensate, and is eventually forced to confront Intelligence as a barrier to further Artificer advancement 21 409 415.

Karl is an Armorer Artificer with broad expertise in machinery, construction, metallurgy, rune work, firearms, constructs, and magical-item production.
- Creates practical survival equipment, furniture, kilns, pottery, carts, armor, weapons, and production machinery from limited materials 16 35.
- Uses Spell Infusion to create or enhance items, including rapid-fire weapons, returning weapons, defensive enhancements, Alchemy Jugs, Bags of Holding, climbing ropes, and water-breathing equipment 10 65.

- Possesses Telekinesis and Telepathy feats 6.

- Directly controls constructs with psionic energy, a technique that inspires the Psionic Hacker sub-class 304 415.
- Enhances reflexes through psionic equipment, though early attempts with a psionic forehead protector suffer from control problems 274.
- Experiences shallower sleep as his psionic power grows, treating the loss of deep sleep as a security trade-off 260.
Soul of the Time Mechanic
Karl awakens the Soul of the Time Mechanic after exposure to a Nightmare Spirit’s memories.
- The talent is verified by Elise after Karl is suspected of Nightmare Spirit possession 331.
- Deepens his connection with his mech until it functions as an extension of his body rather than merely armor 332.
- Improves the Iron Ant constructs after he touches them with psionic energy 332.
Scouting Dragon Mark
Karl’s Dragon Mark manifests as a strange pattern on his back.
- Grants Darkvision, which improves enough for him to see clearly in darkness 18 20.
- Provides Hunter’s Intuition, Seeker Magic, and Dragon Mark spells 20.
- Enhances his perception and contributes to resistance against mental magic 113.
- Supports his ability to analyze magical-item structures and identify weaknesses during combat 185.
Arcane Power Armor and Mech Combat
Karl combines Artificer crafting, Arcane Knight training, Dragonshards, and psionics into increasingly advanced armored systems.
- His initial Arcane Power Armor includes a lightning emitter, power stride, and dampening field 30.
- Upgrades the armor with Blackstone Greatsword fragments, a Khyber Dragonshard, and a Storm Rune to reinforce its lightning emitter 39.
- Establishes a magical transformation link with the armor, allowing him to summon and wear it instantly 65.
- Uses thrusters for flight, though his first activation ends with him crashing into a ceiling 65.
- Fuses his Power Armor with the Skyfire Optimus Prime Mech for large-scale combat 325.
- Uses electromagnetic cannons, rocket pods, Lightning weapons, nitrogen jets, magic cannons, and heavy melee weapons against fortresses, fleets, constructs, and undead 242 325 326 327.
- Can use the mech’s strength, mobility, and armor to fight opponents far above ordinary Artificer combat capability 378 392.

Karl supplements artificing with Warrior and Arcane Knight training.
- Earns the Combat Apprentice feat through Dream World combat training 23.
- Trains armor-based Defense tactics before later learning heavier offensive styles from Ryan 23 135.
- Gains Warrior traits including Second Wind, Action Surge, weapon bond, Arcane Deflection, and Tactical Intellect 401.

- Can combine physical strikes, armor systems, and spell effects in rapid succession, particularly while piloting his mech 217 327.
