| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Great Magic prototype | 483 485 628 | A prototype may be fused with a World Stone to begin completing a wizard's magic system. Locke's Porcelain Moon Growth is identified as possessing prototype characteristics, though it is still too weak to be a true prototype. |
| Initial Forging / Unforged Stage | 699 713 715 | A wizard uses the moment of unity with a world and its World Stone to turn a Great Magic's circulation into a second soul. A newly created First-Forging Great Magic remains in the Unforged Stage and is vulnerable to poor dissipation and structural separation. |
| Void Forging | 715 787 | The wizard patches the Great Magic with rune-bearing spells, more internal entities, and a unifying symbolic Power System. This creates a “currency” for the system, improving energy efficiency and compatibility. |
| Star Forge level | 836 | Completing Void Forging elevates a Great Magic to Star Forge level. Establishing and refining a Power System is central to this transition. |
| Further reforging / Pseudo Forging | 709 1003 1132 | Great Magics can undergo repeated reforging, developing more complex structures and new forms. Pseudo Forging can further temper a Great Magic without necessarily replacing its existing foundation. |
Nature and Function
Great Magic is the defining magic of a Second-Ring Wizard: a spell that establishes an energy cycle within a world and becomes a magic source for its creator 701. By merging a Great Magic's circulation with their soul, a wizard changes from an individual caster into a phenomenon supported by their world 699 704.
A complete Great Magic benefits three parties at once:
- The wizard gains a second soul, a source of total Magic Pressure, and access to Second-Ring magic. 699 700
- The world gains increased total Magic Pressure and more complete Rules through the fusion of a World Stone and Great Magic. 700
- Wizard Civilization gains indirect control over the world through the wizard's established magical ecology. 700
Great Magic cannot remain a small-scale or purely personal spell. Its energy cycle requires many component entities—such as Magic Plants, Servant Races, believers, artifacts, or other internal participants—to circulate and sustain power 701.
“Great Magic was both the magic source and a spell; it was the most powerful magic a Second Ring wizard possessed.” 701
Construction and Reforging
World Stones and Second Souls
A World Stone allows a wizard to unify their knowledge, mana, personality, cognition, and emotions with a world, creating the conditions for a Great Magic to become their second soul 699. Great Magic construction is therefore also an initial form of plane conquest 701.
Great Magic Runes
Great Magic Runes connect a wizard's Second-Ring Spell Models to their Great Magic.
- A Great Magic Rune appears for every additional 3,000 Magic Pressure after the wizard exceeds 10,000 Magic Pressure. 704
- A rune-bearing Second-Ring spell is cast simultaneously by the wizard's soul and their Great Magic. 704
- Such spells consume the Great Magic's stored total Magic Pressure, trading future reserves for immediate power. 704
- Poorly matched Spell Models can destabilize, collapse, or regress a Great Magic. 704
Power Systems
A Power System acts as the “currency” of a Great Magic: it links the entities within the magical ecology, the wizard's own powers, and the world's forces into a single system 715.
A successfully designed Power System:
- Reduces energy dissipation.
- Improves energy compatibility.
- Doubles instantaneous Magic Pressure output amplification.
- Gives the Great Magic a coherent symbolic structure for further reforging. 715
External equipment may also be incorporated during construction. Soul Magic Artifacts, Magic Plants, and Second-Ring magic artifacts can reinforce a Great Magic, particularly before it has become fully independent 692 716.
Evaluation and Limitations
Great Magic is evaluated primarily as an energy system rather than by the novelty of its effect. Important considerations include:
- Energy conversion, acquisition, storage, and conduction.
- Energy dissipation rate.
- Energy compatibility with the host world.
- Instantaneous Magic Pressure output amplification.
- Total Magic Pressure capacity.
- Structural stability and the absence of exploitable loopholes or backdoors. 709 714
Newly forged Great Magics commonly suffer from high dissipation, excessive separation between components, and poor burst efficiency 713. A powerful strike can temporarily drain even a Great Magic with considerable total Magic Pressure if its internal cycle is inefficient 713.
Because Great Magic is separated from its creator as a large-scale magic source, it can be targeted, damaged, or even turned into a generic magic source through special means 701 737.
Known Great Magics
| Great Magic | User | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Sea Buckthorn Ecology | Wizard Zalan Bailey | Uses external energy and a copied energy-locking structure to halt desertification on a medium-sized plane. Wizard Sith judges it poorly constructed and insufficiently innovative. 640 |
| Moon of Evolution / Evolution Moon | Locke Augustine | A Botany- and Breeding-oriented Great Magic capable of incorporating Locke's Archaeology, Potions, Bloodline Studies, and Botany systems. Its low dissipation and compatibility with the Kingdom Domain make it exceptionally efficient. 652 714 726 |
| Time Shadow Fern | Wizard Edgar | Establishes the Land of All Spirits and connects the Silent Plane to the Emerald Dream, creating a life-and-death cycle through which Magic Plants can emerge and evolve. 705 |
| Meteor from Beyond | Wizard Smith | Draws on Comet Planes and Astral Realm energy. It can create Servant Races and use them as a reserve of total Magic Pressure. 701 709 |
| Fate Loom | Witch Georgina | Converts the caster's Magic Pressure into magic robes and uses a spiritual network to regulate energy flow. Its fate-related effects are powerful but structurally suspect. 699 709 |
| Psionic Network | Unknown Second-Ring Wizard; later controlled by Locke | A Void-Forging Great Magic that conceals the Silent Plane's defects and creates its artificial sky. After its original owner vanished, it became a Magic Item that Locke could control as a second Great Magic. 715 |
| Tree of Prosperity | Locke Augustine | Locke's second Great Magic, built around the Prosperity Tree Spell Model. It combines Misty's Power, Life Magic, Four Seasons Studies, and Archaeology Spell Models. 882 |
