Background

Lang Pu first appears as an unusually articulate Ogre Mage who shields the ogre Da Tou from Keosius's displeasure by using language drawn from the Record of Noble Etiquette. Keosius recognizes him as an unusually clever ogre and takes him into his service 11.

His magical education began after he ate a travelling mage and found books in the mage's carriage. Keosius prohibited him from eating humanoids after learning this, forcing Lang Pu to abandon a food source he still regarded fondly 12. He later developed into Ember Nest's chief steward, using his literacy, spellcraft, and appetite for administration to manage the growing monster settlement 19 61.

Keosius selected Lang Pu as the first recipient of the Bloodline Gift. The transformation remade him from an ogre into a Dragon Vein creature, making him a core servant of the Red Dragon's expanding faction 39 40.

Appearance

Lang Pu began as a large, ugly ogre, but the Bloodline Gift changed him into a massive Dragon Vein Ogre whose body became increasingly draconic over time 11 40 212.

  • More than five meters tall immediately after his transformation; later described at roughly six meters tall 40 80 212.
  • Covered in bright scarlet Dragon Scales, with golden vertical pupils 40.
  • Has draconic claws, elongated sharp teeth, forehead horns, facial frills, and scalding blood 40.
  • Later developed bone spurs along his knees, elbows, and back, as well as bone-white horns and a protruding snout 212.
  • Commonly wears gold-rimmed glasses and a scarlet robe refined from multiple magic robes 53 209.
  • Eventually gained a pair of small Dragon Wings as one of the Empire's highest-ranking Half-Dragons 672.

Personality

Lang Pu combines ogreish brutality with a genuine obsession for learning, magic, wealth, and institutional order. He treasures spell scrolls, dreams of spreading his reputation as the “Great Wise One,” and treats magical knowledge as a resource to be collected and exploited 53 80 154.

He is arrogant toward lesser spellcasters and Starfallers, but highly deferential to Keosius. His loyalty is reinforced by the Bloodline Gift and by his conviction that Keosius gave his life meaning beyond eating and sleeping 40 80 82.

As an administrator, Lang Pu is exacting and intolerant of incompetence. He disciplines ogres through fear, exposes corruption among court mages, and is willing to torture prisoners for magical knowledge or convert their remains into equipment 53 154 237.
