Background / History
The Myriad Souls Banner is an ancient Immortal Artifact whose original body was destroyed or lost at an unknown time. Its memories of that period became hazy as its spirit weakened. Though it can inhabit almost any object, the quality and shape of the vessel determine how much of its power it can use. It must recognize a master and be nourished through that master to halt its decline. 39
Before Chen Yi obtained it, the Banner tempted Old Liu with promises of power. Its bewitchment drove Old Liu toward madness, though Chen Yi resisted because of his immunity to foreign-race bewitchment. Chen Yi destroyed the Banner's temporary white vessel, forced the Artifact Spirit into submission, and later allowed it to inhabit a tattered Soul-Summoning Banner. 39 40
The Banner initially pushed Chen Yi toward indiscriminate murder to acquire souls. Chen Yi instead relied primarily on demon hunting, using strong Demon Souls as combat servants and dissolving weaker ones into soul power. 29 41
The Banner's previous master before its destruction was the notorious Evil Banner King. According to the Banner, the Shen Family pursued the Evil Banner King after he killed a Shen Clan disciple, eventually joining with the Demon Race to hunt him down. 111
After absorbing Earth Vein energy, the Banner revealed its ambition to free spirit artifacts from human control. It awakened intelligence in spiritual artifacts worldwide and incited widespread rebellion, then was captured and forcibly subdued by Chen Yi using the Nine Provinces Cauldron. 83 84
Its earlier actions ultimately led to the exile of rebellious spirit artifacts to Western Liang, where they established the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. The Banner later returned, successfully seized the throne from the Immortal-Binding Rope, and ordered a kingdom-wide search for Dust-Forgetting Water. 142 143
The Banner later repeated its artifact-awakening scheme during the war against the Dragon Person Race. After communicating directly with the Earth Spirit, it broadcast a declaration of independence that caused spiritual artifacts throughout the Human World, including Dragon Person war machines, to awaken and rebel. 282
Personality
The Banner is boastful, theatrical, manipulative, and intensely status-conscious. It calls itself an Immortal Artifact of great dignity, regularly exaggerates its achievements, and reacts badly to being mocked or treated as inferior. 39 70 143
It is opportunistic and often cowardly when facing overwhelming danger. During its confrontation with the Old Demon Hag, it first urged Chen Yi to flee, then attempted to switch masters through extravagant flattery. It nevertheless later attempted to self-destruct against her, showing that its self-preservation does not entirely exclude loyalty. 345
Its greatest ambition is the independence and political dominance of intelligent spiritual artifacts. It sees itself as their natural emperor, though Chen Yi repeatedly keeps that ambition under control. 83 141 282
The Banner is deeply vain about its seniority among Chen Yi's artifacts, styles itself the Myriad Immortal Venerable or the artifacts' eldest senior brother, and later publicly calls itself the Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. 71 222 542
Appearance
The Banner's appearance changes with its vessel and refinement state.
- Initially appeared as a tattered white banner emerging from black mist. 70
- Its disembodied Artifact Spirit appears as a flickering black, ghost-fire-like energy body. 83
- Its refined Human Emperor Banner form is golden, emits holy light and faint colorful mist, and produces sounds akin to Zen chants and celestial music. 230
- It can reshape its banner surface into hand-like forms for gestures or physical interaction. 230 345
- In battle, its Human Emperor Banner form can unfurl as a great golden banner radiating boundless light. 431
Abilities & Skills
Soul Collection and Refinement
The Banner collects newly deceased souls and processes them in two principal ways. 39 41
- Dissolution — melts souls into soul power, which nourishes both Chen Yi and the Banner.
- Refinement — turns souls into obedient soul servants capable of fighting outside the Banner.
- Its combat power scales upward as its stored soul count grows. 41
- At Immortal Artifact level, it instantly processed Demon Souls below the Golden Body Realm. 116
- It can collect even powerful souls, though souls stronger than its current capacity may rupture the Banner from within. 431
- Its immense later soul reserve allowed it to easily suppress a Heaven-Reaching Realm Dragon Person soul using the combined soul power of three hundred million Demon Souls. 503
Soul Servants
Refined souls retain abilities they possessed in life.
- Demon Soul servants can use their former demon arts. 41
- The Shen Family Ancestor was refined into a Soul Slave after the Banner was modified with a Heaven-grade Spiritual Artifact. 111
- Qingtai and Canxing were weakened through attempted refinement before being compelled into service. 298
- By Chapter 471, the Banner held three hundred million Demon Souls awaiting eventual use as Ghost Cultivators. Its capacity was so full that many Banner abilities became unavailable. 471
- Hu Tiangong, the Qilin Soul, and the three hundred million Demon Souls must remain within the Banner in the Human World, as the Underworld would otherwise draw them away. 471
- The Old Demon Hag released the Banner's previously stored souls while studying it, leaving it in urgent need of replacements during Chen Yi's later Real Realm campaigns. 387
Bewitchment and Conversion
The Banner naturally excels at influencing minds.
- It tempts targets with power, revenge, status, and cultivation advancement. 39 70
- Its rhetoric, amplified by Earth Vein energy, helped incite newly awakened spiritual artifacts to rebel. 84
- After evolving into the Human Emperor Banner, it gained Conversion, forcibly changing a captive soul's allegiance; Huchacha became submissive and divulged Dragon Person intelligence. 230
- Conversion can fail against some targets, including unusual Dragon Person souls, leading Chen Yi to use force instead. 263 297
- When mystical conversion proved ineffective against Qingtai and Canxing, Chen Yi and the Banner used “Physical Persuasion” to force their submission. 298
Reinforce
The evolved Human Emperor Banner can strengthen stored souls beyond their original destructive capacity.
- A Golden Body Realm Fish Demon Soul destroyed a hill after being reinforced. 230
- The Banner's original soul functions—dissolution and refinement—were expanded by Conversion and Reinforce. 230
Ghost Come and Myriad Ghost Techniques
The Banner possesses several techniques for manipulating, deploying, and directing stored souls.
- Ghost Come — creates a soul-targeting vortex that drags in nonmaterial targets while leaving physical objects unaffected. 92
- Hundred Ghosts Night Parade — deploys large numbers of stored Soul Bodies in battle; its use was among the Banner's classic techniques after its refinement. 229 472
- Myriad Ghosts Going to Market — releases Soul Bodies for reconnaissance and battlefield awareness. After the Banner's evolution, it could distribute three thousand souls in a coordinated network across an entire island. 235
- The Banner can exert soul pressure to momentarily suppress weaker enemies before Chen Yi closes in for a physical attack. 263
Soul-Piercing Thorn
A direct soul-targeting attack used in the Real Realm. 344 345
- Fires a golden, cone-shaped beam containing stored Demon Souls, resentment, and soul power.
- Designed to bypass conventional differences in cultivation through direct damage to the target's soul.
- Can be blocked by a sufficiently capable physical Dharma Artifact, as the Old Demon Hag's Great Windcoat demonstrated. 345
Soul-Turning Chaos
The Banner's ultimate sacrificial technique.
- It used Soul-Turning Chaos against a pursuing Martial Saint after Chen Yi released it from their master-recognition bond.
- The attack destroyed the enemy and saved Chen Yi during a crisis, demonstrating the Banner's willingness to return and protect its master despite being given the opportunity to flee. 165
Myriad Souls Infusion Formation
The Banner can provide a method for advancing a cultivator into the Soul Tempering Realm. 42
- Requires at least 10,000 mortal souls, or several hundred Demon Souls.
- Requires a Formation Master, substantial Crystal Stones, and a Banner body of at least mid-grade Spiritual Artifact quality.
- Channels a massive number of Soul Bodies into the user; survival depends on enduring the resulting impact.
Concealment and Storage
As an Immortal Artifact, the Banner can conceal itself from ordinary Spiritual Sense unless openly revealed. 40
- Can change size and merge into its master's body. 40
- Can store relatively stable objects such as Crystal Stones.
- Stored items may be corrupted by its Devilish Qi, and Crystal Stones cannot be kept inside indefinitely. 42
- Its normal post-evolution capacity could hold millions of souls and could be forced to accommodate tens of millions, before later expanding to contain three hundred million Demon Souls. 248 471
Relationships
- Chen Yi — Master and frequent adversary in their master-servant dynamic. Chen Yi repeatedly forces the Banner into obedience while relying on its soul-refining power. 40 84 345
- Old Liu — A prospective master whom the Banner bewitched with promises of power. 39
- Nine Provinces Cauldron / Dachun — A fellow artifact that suppressed and refined the Banner after its rebellion; its superiority keeps the Banner in check. 84 141
- Demon Refining Pot — Rival Immortal Artifact. The two constantly insult each other and compete over status despite serving the same master. 141 180
- Immortal-Binding Rope — Former ruler of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom who abdicated after the Banner rallied the kingdom's artifacts. 143
- Earth Spirit — Was manipulated by the Banner into distributing sentience among spiritual artifacts. 85 142
- Shen Family Ancestor — Captured and later refined into a Soul Slave within the Banner. 107 111
- Huchacha — A captured Dragon Person spy whom the evolved Banner converted into a loyal informant. 230
- Qingtai and Canxing — Dragon Person Earthly Venerable souls that resisted Conversion but were eventually forced into service as Seven Luminaries Immortal Array cores. 297 298
- Hu Tiangong — A prominent Demon Soul housed within the Banner who helped summon Demon Race souls and later assisted Chen Yi's plans. 297 470
- Old Demon Hag — A Real Realm enemy who identified the Banner as a Spirit Treasure, seized it after defeating Chen Yi, and released its stored souls while studying it. 344 345 387
- Jin Hai — An Immortal Lord-level adversary confronted by the Banner in its capacity as Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. 542
Story Role / Major Arcs
Acquisition and Demon Hunting
Chen Yi tracked the Banner through simulations and later recovered it in reality. After binding it, he used Demon Souls rather than indiscriminately slaughtering humans, establishing the Banner as both a cultivation aid and a growing army of soul servants. 31 40 41 71
Artifact Rebellion
The Banner exploited the Earth Vein to awaken spiritual artifacts worldwide and call for their independence. Chen Yi anticipated the scheme through the Simulator, pursued it, and suppressed it with the Nine Provinces Cauldron. 83 84
Spirit Artifact Kingdom
The Banner's rebellion indirectly created the Spirit Artifact Kingdom in Western Liang. Chen Yi later backed its claim to the throne, allowing it to become king while using the kingdom's resources to search for Dust-Forgetting Water. 141 143
It later carried out its ambition on an even greater scale during the Dragon Person conflict, persuading the Earth Spirit to awaken all artifacts in the Human World and turning the Dragon Person Race's own war machines against them. 282
Human Emperor Banner Evolution
After repeated failed refinement attempts, Chen Yi successfully refined the Banner's true form. The resulting heavenly phenomenon elevated it beyond ordinary Immortal Artifacts and transformed it into the Human Emperor Banner. 229 230
Seven Luminaries Immortal Array
When Formless threatened the Human World, the Banner released Hu Tiangong, Qingtai, and Canxing to support the Seven Luminaries Immortal Array. Its failure to peacefully convert the two Dragon Person Earthly Venerables led to their eventual submission through Physical Persuasion. 297 298
Real Realm Companion
Upon Chen Yi's ascent to the Real Realm, the Banner uniquely retained its Artifact Spirit while other artifacts fell silent. It continued supporting Chen Yi in battle, though its power was suppressed by the Real Realm's stronger rules. 343 344
During Chen Yi's first major Real Realm battle, it launched Soul-Piercing Thorn against the Old Demon Hag and attempted to break her Divine Pattern restraint. Although the Old Demon Hag seized the Banner after defeating Chen Yi, it later returned to Chen Yi's side. 345 387
The other Immortal Artifacts' Artifact Spirits were later shown to have recovered within a Spirit Nourishing Pool, ending the Banner's temporary status as Chen Yi's sole artifact companion. 385
Demon World Soul Army
After Chen Yi enlisted Hu Tiangong to summon the Demon World's dead, the Banner forcefully expanded its internal space and ultimately stored three hundred million Demon Souls. These souls were retained as a future Ghost Cultivator army, though their enormous number severely restricted the Banner's ordinary functions. 470 471
Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom
By the conflict with Immortal Lord Jin Hai, the Banner openly styled itself the Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. It joined Chen Yi's forces and corrupted Immortal Artifacts in confronting Jin Hai, using its artifact forces to harass and distract the Immortal Lord. 542
Trivia
- The Banner claims soul-power gains are divided seven-to-three in Chen Yi's favor, but its actual split was observed to be closer to half-and-half. 116
- It once called Chen Yi “Godfather” to avoid punishment after considering betrayal. 107
- Despite its desire for artifact independence, it returned to Chen Yi after being released from their ownership bond during a crisis. 165
- It considers itself the “senior brother” among Chen Yi's artifacts and resents being denied Star Source repair resources. 222
- It once demanded that Chen Yi address it as the “Myriad Immortal Venerable” and insisted that serving Chen Yi should be called “cooperation,” not recognizing a master. 71
- When overloaded by three hundred million Demon Souls, its internal memory and available capacity became so saturated that Chen Yi could only use a temporary “beggar-version” imitation Banner for some tests. 472
