Background / History

The Myriad Souls Banner is an ancient Immortal Artifact whose original body was destroyed or lost at an unknown time. Its memories of that period became hazy as its spirit weakened. Though it can inhabit almost any object, the quality and shape of the vessel determine how much of its power it can use. It must recognize a master and be nourished through that master to halt its decline. 39

Before Chen Yi obtained it, the Banner tempted Old Liu with promises of power. Its bewitchment drove Old Liu toward madness, though Chen Yi resisted because of his immunity to foreign-race bewitchment. Chen Yi destroyed the Banner's temporary white vessel, forced the Artifact Spirit into submission, and later allowed it to inhabit a tattered Soul-Summoning Banner. 39 40

This interception occurred in a simulation. In reality, Chen Yi used information about the Banner's earlier travels to find it near Goose City before Old Liu could obtain it. The Banner emerged from the Zhao brothers' father's grave and incited Zhao Long and Zhao Hu to fight over it. Chen Yi subdued its spirit with soul-damaging attacks and completed the master-recognition ritual using blood and the Three Energies. 68 69 70 71

The Banner initially pushed Chen Yi toward indiscriminate murder to acquire souls. Chen Yi instead relied primarily on demon hunting, using strong Demon Souls as combat servants and dissolving weaker ones into soul power. 29 41

Before its acquisition by Chen Yi, it also sustained itself by bewitching weak-willed martial artists into offering their original souls. The Banner explained that refining part of a master's original soul could rapidly increase cultivation, but severely depleted vitality and shortened lifespan. 39 69

The Banner's previous master before its destruction was the notorious Evil Banner King. According to the Banner, the Shen Family pursued the Evil Banner King after he killed a Shen Clan disciple, eventually joining with the Demon Race to hunt him down. 111

After absorbing Earth Vein energy, the Banner revealed its ambition to free spirit artifacts from human control. It awakened intelligence in spiritual artifacts worldwide and incited widespread rebellion, then was captured and forcibly subdued by Chen Yi using the Nine Provinces Cauldron. 83 84

Its earlier actions ultimately led to the exile of rebellious spirit artifacts to Western Liang, where they established the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. The Banner later returned, successfully seized the throne from the Immortal-Binding Rope, and ordered a kingdom-wide search for Dust-Forgetting Water. 142 143

The Banner later repeated its artifact-awakening scheme during the war against the Dragon Person Race. After communicating directly with the Earth Spirit, it broadcast a declaration of independence that caused spiritual artifacts throughout the Human World, including Dragon Person war machines, to awaken and rebel. 282

After becoming a Spirit Treasure, it housed three hundred million Demon Souls brought out of the Demon World. Chen Yi eventually arranged for Chen Yue and the Underworld to take custody of these souls and attempt their conversion into Ghost Cultivators, ending the Banner's prolonged burden of sheltering them. 470 471 602

Personality

The Banner is boastful, theatrical, manipulative, and intensely status-conscious. It calls itself an Immortal Artifact of great dignity, regularly exaggerates its achievements, and reacts badly to being mocked or treated as inferior. 39 70 143

It is opportunistic and often cowardly when facing overwhelming danger. During its confrontation with the Old Demon Hag, it first urged Chen Yi to flee, then attempted to switch masters through extravagant flattery. It nevertheless later attempted to self-destruct against her, showing that its self-preservation does not entirely exclude loyalty. 345

Its greatest ambition is the independence and political dominance of intelligent spiritual artifacts. It sees itself as their natural emperor, though Chen Yi repeatedly keeps that ambition under control. 83 141 282

The Banner is deeply vain about its seniority among Chen Yi's artifacts, styles itself the Myriad Immortal Venerable or the artifacts' eldest senior brother, and later publicly calls itself the Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. 71 222 542

Despite its imperious manner, it can be playful and mischievous around its fellow artifacts. While traveling on the Star Boat, it organized a game of “King's Game,” embarrassing and discomforting the other sentient artifacts. 555

It also shows occasional sympathy toward other artifacts subjected to Chen Yi's discipline, quietly empathizing with the Devouring Heaven Demon Blade when Chen Yi forced the blade to remove Luo Shui's Killing Intent. 591

Acquisition and Demon Hunting

Chen Yi tracked the Banner through simulations and later recovered it in reality. After binding it, he used Demon Souls rather than indiscriminately slaughtering humans, establishing the Banner as both a cultivation aid and a growing army of soul servants. 31 40 41 71

Its earliest appearance established its danger: Old Liu wielded a banner filled with wailing, struggling souls, and Chen Yi recognized it from an earlier simulated massacre in White Cloud County that had caused his daughter's death. 19

In reality, Chen Yi intercepted it near Goose City after it tempted the Zhao brothers. He refused its subsequent proposal to slaughter the city's inhabitants for their souls. 70 71

Artifact Rebellion

The Banner exploited the Earth Vein to awaken spiritual artifacts worldwide and call for their independence. Chen Yi anticipated the scheme through the Simulator, pursued it, and suppressed it with the Nine Provinces Cauldron. 83 84

The awakening weakened the Earth Spirit by distributing its spirituality among the artifacts. Chen Yi disapproved of this manipulation, while the subdued Banner remained depressed and silent for several months. 84 85

Spirit Artifact Kingdom

The Banner's rebellion indirectly created the Spirit Artifact Kingdom in Western Liang. Chen Yi later backed its claim to the throne, allowing it to become king while using the kingdom's resources to search for Dust-Forgetting Water. 141 143

Once crowned, it enjoyed receiving homage and appointing officials. It made the Immortal-Binding Rope Prime Minister and the Demon Refining Pot Chief Eunuch, while Chen Yi remained the effective authority behind its decrees and resource searches. Its ambition to expand into the Central Plains was constrained by the kingdom's agreement with the Human Race. 143 144

It later carried out its ambition on an even greater scale during the Dragon Person conflict, persuading the Earth Spirit to awaken all artifacts in the Human World and turning the Dragon Person Race's own war machines against them. 282

The resulting kingdom established its capital near the Dragon Person army's stronghold. The Banner provoked the army daily and helped Chen Yi gain military merits while he infiltrated under the identity Ai Bobo. 288

Human Emperor Banner Evolution

After repeated failed refinement attempts, Chen Yi successfully refined the Banner's true form. The resulting heavenly phenomenon elevated it beyond ordinary Immortal Artifacts and transformed it into the Human Emperor Banner. 229 230

The successful method refined its existing Artifact Spirit together with the new body, reversing the usual order in which an artifact is created before developing a spirit. Chen Yi's Reinforce! entry then raised its quality one grade above Immortal Artifact, although the resulting grade was marked as unknown and was not established as equivalent to a Great Dao Immortal Artifact. 229 230

Seven Luminaries Immortal Array

When Formless threatened the Human World, the Banner released Hu Tiangong, Qingtai, and Canxing to support the Seven Luminaries Immortal Array. Its failure to peacefully convert the two Dragon Person Earthly Venerables led to their eventual submission through Physical Persuasion. 297 298

Real Realm Companion

Upon Chen Yi's ascent to the Real Realm, the Banner uniquely retained its Artifact Spirit while other artifacts fell silent. It continued supporting Chen Yi in battle, though its power was suppressed by the Real Realm's stronger rules. 343 344

Its survival was later explained by its enhanced quality: ordinary Human World Immortal Artifacts counted only as high-level Dharma Artifacts in the Real Realm, whereas the Banner's Super Immortal Artifact state qualified it as a Spirit Treasure. 356

During Chen Yi's first major Real Realm battle, it launched Soul-Piercing Thorn against the Old Demon Hag and attempted to break her Divine Pattern restraint. Although the Old Demon Hag seized the Banner after defeating Chen Yi, it later returned to Chen Yi's side. 345 387

The other Immortal Artifacts' Artifact Spirits were later shown to have recovered within a Spirit Nourishing Pool, ending the Banner's temporary status as Chen Yi's sole artifact companion. 385

It continued contributing beyond direct soul attacks. Its encouragement helped Chen Yi recognize how to adapt Mountain Carrying into the light-speed attack that defeated Niu Sanjiao, and it later helped sustain him during his battle against Spirit Micro Star's high-level cultivators. 389 490

Demon World Soul Army

After Chen Yi enlisted Hu Tiangong to summon the Demon World's dead, the Banner forcefully expanded its internal space and ultimately stored three hundred million Demon Souls. These souls were retained as a future Ghost Cultivator army, though their enormous number severely restricted the Banner's ordinary functions. 470 471

When Chen Yi reunited with Chen Yue, he asked her and the Underworld to assist with their conversion. Chen Yue explained that her master could supply the immense Soul Sea energy required and warned that some souls might fail to survive the process. Hu Tiangong, the Qilin Beast, and the other Demon Souls accepted the risk and vowed, “If there is a battle, answer the call and we shall return.” 602

Chen Yue used a gourd-shaped Underworld Treasure in cooperation with the Banner to take all the Demon Souls into her custody. She also gave Chen Yi an Underworld Domain Token for instantaneous communication through Inner Space with her and, after conversion, the Demon Souls. The Banner joked about finally being freed of its burden. 602

Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom

By the conflict with Immortal Lord Jin Hai, the Banner openly styled itself the Great Emperor of the Spirit Artifact Kingdom. It joined Chen Yi's forces and corrupted Immortal Artifacts in confronting Jin Hai, using its artifact forces to harass and distract the Immortal Lord. 542

Star Boat Journey

While traveling aboard the Star Boat, the Banner entertained itself by organizing a “King's Game” among the sentient artifacts. Its antics embarrassed and unsettled its fellow artifacts while Chen Yi investigated the spacecraft Kuafu-1. 555

Mysterious Maiden Star System Campaign

After transferring the Demon Souls to Chen Yue, the Banner remained with Chen Yi during preparations for the Heavenly Dragon Kingdom's conquest of the Mysterious Maiden Star System. During the campaign, Chen Yi ordered it to deliver treasures to the rear warships rather than have them approach his flagship. It readily accepted the task, supporting a fleet of two thousand war Star Boats. 602 606
