Background / History

Guardian of the Soul King Palace

Monk served as the Zero Division’s leading guardian and devoted himself to preserving the stability of the Three Realms. During the ancient conflict with Yhwach, he used the Soul King’s left hand to seal Yhwach’s omniscience and omnipotence, forcing Yhwach into a thousand-year recovery. 336 498

His guardianship was inseparable from the Soul King’s dismembered body. Monk maintained an altar of Soul King components and treated those parts as a source of power to be used whenever the Soul King Palace or the Three Realms required protection. 336

Battle with Aizen

After Aizen destroyed Ōetsu Nimaiya’s residence, Monk confronted him in the Soul King Palace. Aizen’s Kyōka Suigetsu illusions initially obscured the battle, but Monk countered with Ichimonji, severing Aizen’s name and cutting his power in half. 312 313

Monk escalated to Shin’uchi, renaming Aizen an “ant” and physically reducing him to that concept. He later exploited impurities in Aizen’s Hōgyoku to trigger Urahara Kisuke’s implanted sealing Kidō. 314 316

Conflict with Tsuna

Monk came to regard Tsuna as an uncontrollable outsider and a potential destroyer of the world. He attempted to stain, rename, and seal Tsuna as a replacement Soul King, but Tsuna’s Sun and Sky powers repeatedly neutralized Monk’s ink and naming techniques. 332 333 337

After Tsuna destroyed Monk’s body, Monk used the power tied to his own name to resurrect. He then sought a section of the Soul King’s intestine, returning with greater power and eventually stealing abilities from members of the Zero Division through named ink replicas. 336 340

Tsuna later captured Monk alive, severed his limbs, and brought him to the Soul King Palace. Monk escaped into the Inner Palace, consumed additional Soul King parts, and remade himself as “New Hyōsube Ichibei.” 342 344 345 346

Defeat and New Role

Monk’s final assault ended when Tsuna activated his true Bankai, Vongola’s Dying Will Flame. The Soul King withdrew the power Monk had taken, using it to repair the Three Realms, while Tsuna destroyed Monk and Ichimonji with a seven-flame strike. 352 353

The Soul King revived Monk afterward, but reduced him to a powerless servant. His restored Ichimonji can record names but can no longer remove or grant them; he now repairs the Soul King Palace alongside Ōetsu Nimaiya. 355
