Background

Ten thousand years before his awakening, Alfred acquired a damaged divine artifact containing divine essence. Because that essence was naturally hostile to vampires, he could not safely absorb it at first. He ultimately entered the underground seal beneath Athkatla to undergo his transformation and claim its power. 678

Alfred was Embraced while still eight years old, permanently trapping him in a child’s body and arresting his development. His inability to mature physically became a lasting source of insecurity, particularly regarding his height; part of his desire for godhood was the hope of permanently changing his form. 696 699

During his long confinement, Alfred became the progenitor of the Nightblade bloodline. His plan depended on awakening through the blood of his descendants, gaining divinity, and eventually becoming the god of all vampires rather than merely his own family. 678 695

Appearance

Alfred normally resembles a beautiful but unsettling young boy, with a body approximately three feet tall and red eyes. Although he presents himself with refined manners and aristocratic poise, his childlike appearance is a subject he reacts to with immediate hostility. 695 699 1559

  • Permanently retains the appearance of the child he was when Embraced. 696 1559
  • Can assume a blood form, reshape his body, and create forms ranging from blood spikes to giant bat-like bodies. 700 729
  • While possessing Rhine, he adopts a taller, pale, handsome, and highly charismatic vampire appearance. 711
  • His Blood Moon Bloodhulk form is covered in crimson crystalline scales and bears back tentacles with toothed suckers that drain victims dry. 745

Personality

Alfred is vain, theatrical, and intensely dependent on admiration. He enjoys praise and worship, deliberately maintains the “noble mystery” expected of a god, and proclaims himself the ruler of vampirekind. 695 696 1015

His outward etiquette masks an exceptionally petty nature. Remarks about his size, childish body, or being called a “dwarf” provoke disproportionate rage. He also holds grudges for extremely long periods, especially against enemies too dangerous to confront directly. 699 738 1025

Despite his arrogance, Alfred is fundamentally survival-driven. He is an experienced and calculating combatant, but he avoids fair fights, uses hosts and subordinates as shields, and flees as soon as he judges a confrontation unwinnable. His fear of death becomes especially pronounced whenever his regeneration or escape routes are threatened. 702 730 1011

Abilities & Skills

Ancient Vampire Physiology

Alfred’s true body is fundamentally a mass of blood, granting him extraordinary survivability, shapeshifting, and regeneration.

  • Can transform into blood as naturally as breathing; shaping that blood into weapons, spikes, or movement forms consumes power. 700
  • Regenerates lost limbs and body parts within seconds by discarding damaged flesh and reforming himself. 736
  • Can survive dismemberment, decapitation, and even apparent annihilation so long as enough of his blood or will remains. 697 1025 1027
  • Requires blood to replenish his power, even though he does not die from blood thirst like ordinary vampires. 695
  • Blood form is comparatively vulnerable to powerful magic such as Disintegrate, while extreme heat can boil and weaken his liquid body. 735 744

Bloodline Domination and Possession

As the Nightblade progenitor, Alfred can dominate vampires who carry his bloodline, including descendants beyond the direct generation.

  • Exerts control over a descendant’s body and mind; Rhine becomes completely fanatical under this influence. 695
  • Began influencing Rhine gradually while too weak to seize immediate full control. 695
  • Can hide within another vampire’s body, restore the host with blood power, and use the host as both transport and protection. 702
  • Possesses Rhine directly and later sacrifices him completely as nourishment for Blood Moon Frenzy. 711 745

Blood Harvest and Energy Drain

Alfred converts blood and life force into power, allowing him to recover from severe injury and sustain prolonged combat.

  • Blood Feast drains hundreds of victims at once, killing or grievously injuring them and creating Blood Slaughter Wraiths from many survivors. 707
  • Can use Energy Drain against powerful opponents, though layered magical shields can block it. 707 712
  • Draws blood from marked victims to rapidly regenerate after being torn apart by divine attacks. 1023
  • His external blood supply can be cut off by a sufficiently powerful Holy Barrier. 1026

Blood Avatars and Incarnations

Alfred can divide himself into multiple blood-based bodies to misdirect enemies and maintain pressure from several directions.

  • Uses Blood Mirror Image and similar duplicates to distract pursuers and delay spellcasting. 725
  • His avatars and main body can replenish one another by draining blood during combat. 717
  • Blood Incarnation splits his power between incarnations; each can function as a main body, but division weakens him proportionally. 1025 1026
  • Death’s Thorn can destroy an incarnation while preventing its transformation into blood. 1025

Attribute Conversion

Alfred can redistribute the physical attributes of the Bloodhulk body he possesses.

  • Sacrifices Strength to increase Agility to extreme levels, moving too quickly for most opponents to see. 738 739
  • At maximum speed, loses fine control over movement and attacks; he risks harming himself when striking targets or stopping abruptly. 738 739
  • Uses the technique primarily as an escape method when conventional evasion fails. 738

Blood Crystal

Alfred creates solid crimson crystal scales and shields from blood power.

  • Forms crystal scales over his body to resist attacks. 731 744
  • Can concentrate the scales into a large shield against incoming weapons. 1025
  • Does not withstand attacks that negate or consume its power, including Holy Avenger’s dispelling effects and Death’s Thorn’s absorption. 744 1026

Summoning and Spell-Like Abilities

Alfred possesses numerous innate spell-like abilities and uses extraplanar creatures as expendable forces.

  • Casts Summon Dark Servant to call high-ranking vampires. 711
  • Uses Blasphemous Speech to summon and compel demons, including Balors. 716
  • Summons vampires, shadow creatures, fiends, Yugoloths, and Merrenoloths to overwhelm enemies. 711
  • Treats summoned Balors and contracted Yugoloths as disposable pawns; the Yugoloths abandon him when their survival is threatened. 712 720

Blood Moon Frenzy

Alfred’s final combat trump card transforms him into a Blood Moon Bloodhulk.

  • Greatly enhances physical and magical defenses, making him a true physical entity. 744
  • Consumes stored blood power and cannot be sustained permanently. 744
  • Reduces his reasoning to basic goal-oriented instincts and prevents him from using spells or spell-like abilities. 744
  • Absorbs Rhine and his soul to fuel the transformation. 745
  • Ends when Alfred’s heart is destroyed, restoring his rationality but leaving him desperate enough to self-destruct and escape as blood. 746

Divinity and Faith Descent

Alfred possesses stolen divinity and cultivates worship among vampires to support his intended ascension.

  • Absorbed divine essence from the artifact associated with his transformation. 678 706
  • Retains divinity even after most of his body is destroyed, carrying it through his will to a surviving fragment. 1027
  • Can descend through a statue empowered by the faith of thousands of vampire worshippers. 1015
  • Struggles to suppress divinity aligned with light, goodness, justice, and chivalry after stealing it from the Holy Grail. 1027

Weaknesses

  • Death’s Thorn Spear — A natural enemy specifically made to counter ancient vampires; it absorbs Alfred’s power, breaks down Blood Crystal defenses, restrains his transformation, and drains his incarnations. 1025 1026
  • Holy power — Though no longer an ordinary undead creature, he remains evil and can be injured by sufficiently potent justice- and holy-aligned power. 701 745
  • Heat and sunlight-like attacks — Sunburst severely heats and weakens his blood-based body. 735
  • Regeneration suppression — Unidentified energy from Solam’s attack prevents blood power from repairing particular wounds. 730 731
  • Fear of death — When faced with a credible threat to his immortality, Alfred becomes panicked and prioritizes escape over every other objective. 730 732

Relationships

  • Rhine — Bloodline descendant and controlled servant. Alfred uses Rhine as a host and shield before absorbing him, body and soul, during Blood Moon Frenzy. 695 702 745
  • Solam — Sworn enemy. Solam repeatedly counters Alfred’s escape attempts, wounds him with divine artifacts, and later uses Death’s Thorn to destroy one of his incarnations. 735 1025 1027
  • Weslan — Paladin adversary and persistent pursuer. Weslan battles Alfred with Holy Avenger and later dedicates himself to hunting him down. 743 745 760
  • Osvid — Legendary mage enemy. Alfred battles Osvid throughout the Athkatla crisis, attempts to drain him, and regards him as a dangerous opponent. 707 718 720
  • Adrian — Slaughter Cult leader and later ally. Their factions negotiate for five days, fight during the talks, and ultimately merge their organizations in secret. 1561 1562
  • Pestilen — Fanatical vampire supporter whose prestige and strength stem from Alfred’s favor. 1581
  • Xianna — A component of Alfred’s plan to establish a hidden vampire sanctuary in the Shining Plains. 1017

Story Role / Major Arcs

Awakening beneath Athkatla

Rhine’s true blood awakens Alfred from his thousand-year slumber. Alfred emerges as the Nightblade progenitor, declares himself King of the Blood Race, and reveals that Rhine’s devotion is the result of total bloodline domination. 695

Initially weakened by long starvation, Alfred is attacked by Edward, Solam, Weslan, priests, and paladins. He survives decapitation and holy attacks, but the battle forces him to abandon his initial overconfidence. 697 701 706

Athkatla Crisis and Escape

Alfred uses Rhine as a host, unleashes Blood Feast, summons undead and fiends, and fights Osvid while attempting to escape the underground battlefield. His recovered strength rises beyond legendary level, but Osvid, Solam, and Weslan repeatedly force him into retreat. 702 707 712

After turning Rhine into a Bloodhulk, Alfred is injured by Solam’s healing-suppressing power and realizes his immortality is not absolute. He eventually activates Blood Moon Frenzy, consumes Rhine, and battles Weslan directly before exploding to escape as a streak of blood. 730 745 746

Vampire Godhood and the Holy Grail

Alfred re-emerges as the focus of a growing vampire faith, receiving worship as a demigod and seeking a secure sanctuary for vampire expansion beneath the Shining Plains. Xianna is initially intended to help establish that sanctuary. 1015 1017

While attempting to escape with the Holy Grail, Alfred is countered by Solam’s Death’s Thorn Spear and trapped in a Holy Barrier. Though most of his body is destroyed, the portion teleported away reforms in a distant cavern with the stolen divinity intact. 1025 1026 1027

Alliance with the Slaughter Cult

As vampire persecution and internal dissent worsen, Alfred accepts Adrian’s proposal for deeper cooperation. The vampire faction and Slaughter Cult merge secretly, exchanging resources and support while preparing to oppose Solam. 1560 1562
