Background / History

Stormwind City rules the troubled region of Westfall. At the time Shawn arrives in Azeroth, Westfall suffers from Murloc raids, gnolls, and the Defias Brotherhood's occupation of Moonbrook, while Sentinel Hill and several farms remain its principal refuges 1.

The city fails to dispatch troops to Westfall for two months after Moonbrook falls, despite the nearby Westbrook Garrison possessing elite soldiers and dwarven mechanical weapons. This inaction leaves Gryan Stoutmantle and his locally raised People's Militia to defend Sentinel Hill and resist the Defias Brotherhood without city-provided resources 11 12.

Stormwind's earlier reconstruction created the grievance at the center of the Defias conflict: the Mason Guild was not paid by the city's nobles, and Edwin VanCleef subsequently led its members into becoming the Defias Brotherhood 46. By the current era, Onyxia—disguised as Lady Katrana Prestor—has infiltrated the upper ranks of the city and manipulated its politics. Her influence is linked to King Varian's disappearance, the unpaid masons, and the resulting disasters in both Stormwind and Westfall 46.

Relationship with Westfall

Stormwind's absence is a major cause of Westfall's instability. The city neither sends troops nor provides supplies to Gryan Stoutmantle's militia, forcing Sentinel Hill's defenders to endure hunger and rely on local farms for support 12.

Gryan seeks weapons and armor in Goldshire because Stormwind provides him no resources. He ultimately raises funds from Westfall's farm owners to purchase equipment for the People's Militia 12 24 26.

Despite its failure to aid the region, Stormwind remains strategically vital to Westfall. Gryan states that if the city falls, the people of Westfall will be finished as well 50.

Journey to Stormwind

After securing Gryan's support, Shawn leaves Westfall with Rick and Vanessa to enter Stormwind City. His stated plan is to find Prince Anduin, awaken Bolvar to the deception, seek Jaina's aid in Theramore, locate Marshal Reginald Windsor, restore Varian, and eliminate Onyxia 50.

Appearance
