Background / History

After his death, the last remnant of Sanguinius's soul recovered strength beneath the Emperor's radiance and drifted through the Warp in search of a path back to the material realm. He eventually used He Shenyan's immense psionic power to briefly communicate with the living, deliver a token to one of his Scions, gather his strength, and return. 471

His resurrection was difficult for Roboute Guilliman to accept. Guilliman feared that the returns of Angron, Fulgrim, and Sanguinius might lead to Horus's return as well, while Sanguinius was unsettled by the vast religious and commercial legacy built around his death. 471

The Imperium commemorates him through Sanguinala, held on December 25. His image appears in temples, art, medals, and highly valued statues; he is deeply embarrassed by the scale of this veneration. 471

Appearance

Sanguinius is a striking Primarch with long golden hair and large, pure-white wings. He is often dressed simply despite the grandeur associated with his public image. 471

Personality

Sanguinius is patient, compassionate, and attentive to the suffering of others. He worries for Angron's safety, supports injured brothers such as Fulgrim, and patiently acknowledges the greetings of civilians and soldiers alike. 672 745 922

He is also humble to a fault. Although widely regarded as a radiant angelic ideal, he believes the love and respect shown to him exceed what his deeds deserve. The image others impose upon him creates pressure to remain perpetually gentle, calm, and self-sacrificing. 719 830

Beneath that restraint, Sanguinius carries profound fear and anger. He fears that the Red Thirst within the Blood Angels originates partly in him, and once came close to accepting a Slaaneshi offer to remove his sons' curse at the cost of embracing Chaos. When He Shenyan forced him to confront these feelings, golden flames erupted from his wings and consumed the room. 830

He can be sharp when he believes trust has been betrayed. During his conflict with Guilliman, he accused his brother of becoming increasingly like the Emperor by deciding matters for others without asking what they wanted. 773 774

Sanguinius was troubled by the failure of the Second Empire's plan to pressure Guilliman into declaring himself Emperor. He felt guilt over his role and wished to comfort his sons. 373

The Blood Angels and the Pit

During the war against Khorne's forces, Sanguinius was alarmed by the Blood Angels' ferocity and lack of discipline. He entered the Pit alone to find Angron, resisted Khorne's attempts to provoke him, and used his radiance to cut through the blood mist. 741

Round Table Revelations

Sanguinius convened a meeting in which the Glyph Array revealed alternate realities involving the Primarchs. He was devastated by the account of an alternate Sanguinius who led the Blood Angels into Slaanesh's service, killed Horus, and ascended into daemonhood. 824 825

Confronting the Red Thirst

After the revelations, Sanguinius admitted that he had nearly embraced Chaos in exchange for curing his sons' genetic curse. He began confronting his own anger and bloodlust rather than hiding behind the idealized image of the Archangel. 830

Death of an Angel

Sanguinius travelled to a corrupted Baal with Vulkan and Jaghatai Khan to confront his fallen counterpart. Determined to end the other Sanguinius's torment, he killed him, freed Baal's inhabitants' souls from Slaanesh's influence, and witnessed Baal's destruction. 899

Defence of Macragge

Sanguinius joined Guilliman and Curze during the approach to Macragge. He assigned the Blood Angels to orbital patrol until the battle began and acted as a mediator when Curze clashed with Guilliman over the planned assassination mission. 958 968
