Background

Bayonetta is the daughter of Rosa, bearer of the previous Left Eye, and Balder, holder of the Right Eye. Their forbidden union ignited the conflict between the Witch and Sage clans; the Sage clan later instigated centuries of witch hunts against the Umbra Witches. 60

Five hundred years before the story, Bayonetta lost her mother during the Witch Hunts and lost the will to fight. Jeanne—her childhood friend and rival—sealed Bayonetta inside a ruby set into her pocket watch, then concealed her coffin beneath a lake to keep the Left Eye from the Sages. Luca's father broke the seal twenty years before Bayonetta met Salomon. 75

She awakened with no memories beyond knowing that she was a witch. Hunting angels and feeding demons became instinctual, while her connection to the Left Eye unconsciously drove her to collect jewels. 43 61

Appearance

Bayonetta is a tall, black-haired witch with pale gray or light-colored eyes, a beauty mark near her mouth, and a highly cultivated, fashion-conscious presentation. She commonly wears glasses, high heels, and tailored outfits; in battle, her magical attire is usually black. 51 53 534

  • Her long black hair serves as a manifestation and reservoir of witch magic. 48 53
  • She can form a black, close-fitting combat suit and a clock-like chest ornament from her magic. 53
  • Her combat attire, guns, and accessories can be drawn from her hair through witchcraft. 53 62
  • She has also adopted disguises, including a white nun-like outfit with a headscarf and plain round glasses. 51

Personality

Bayonetta is poised, teasing, and self-assured even under overwhelming pressure. She habitually provokes enemies, treats combat as a dance, and preserves her elegance even when preparing to kill. 54 864 1339

Her confidence does not prevent her from acting on her own judgment. She investigated Vigrid despite warnings because recovering her memories and understanding her origins were matters she considered personally hers to resolve. 61

Beneath her cruelty toward angels, Bayonetta is protective and emotionally perceptive. She shields Cereza, worries about vulnerable children caught in supernatural conflicts, and later takes an active role in Milia's upbringing and magical education. 62 846 1231 1409 She is explicitly described as Chaotic Good. 627

Abilities & Skills

Umbra Witchcraft

Bayonetta uses purple and black magic circles, Enochian incantations, and hair-based witchcraft to fight, travel, and maintain her pacts with demons.

  • Freely enters and exits the Infernal Realm, the plane through which extra-dimensional beings pass before reaching Earth. 43
  • Creates magical clothing, artificial gravity, portals, and combat constructs. 53 78
  • Uses her hair as a magical medium to bind and control summoned demons. 48
  • Is highly educated in witch disciplines, including Enochian, magic, alchemy, close combat, medicine, etiquette, literature, history, and the Art of Pleasure. 868

Firearms and Close-Quarters Combat

Bayonetta combines acrobatics, guns, blades, and heavy weapons into a fluid fighting style described as a dance.

  • Wields firearms in both hands and on both heels, allowing her to fire in multiple directions while moving. 44 53
  • Enhances bullets with witch magic; a lethal hit on a vulnerable angel can reduce it to golden light. 53
  • Uses extreme speed, wall-running, evasive footwork, and high-velocity kicks to exploit openings in larger enemies. 54 62
  • Is proficient with long swords, katanas, chainsaws, and modified anti-armor weapons. 62 63 851
  • Can repeatedly concentrate shots on a single point to penetrate angelic armor. 864

Witch Time

Bayonetta can distort her perception of time and act at extraordinary speed.

  • Allows her to perceive the world as slowed down while making rapid movements in combat. 843
  • Lets her react to attacks comparable to bullet speed. 871
  • Is connected to the power of the Eyes of the World. 879

Demonic Summoning

Bayonetta maintains contracts with powerful Abyssal demons and calls them through her magic circles.

  • Gomora — A dragon-like demon with a human head; devoured a Beloved Angel after Bayonetta exposed its weak point. 54
  • Malphas — A summoned demon used to defeat the Angel of Fortitude. 69
  • Madame Butterfly — Bayonetta's contracted demon and frequent combat partner; can manifest arms or part of her body to strike angels. 846 855
  • Queen Sheba — A colossal demon jointly summoned by Bayonetta and Jeanne to defeat Jubileus. 80

Summons are limited by magical energy and dimensional repulsion. Madame Butterfly begins to dissipate when Bayonetta cannot sustain the summoning magic. 866

Left Eye of the World

Bayonetta bears the Left Eye, one half of the Eyes of the World and a power sought by angels attempting to resurrect Jubileus. 58

  • Her Left Eye subconsciously drew her toward the Right Eye and manifested as a compulsion to collect jewels. 61
  • It awakened after she sent Cereza back to the past and received memories from divergent parallel histories. 78
  • Its awakening created parallel worlds and made Bayonetta central to Balder's plan to revive Jubileus. 78 79
  • She later states that she can use the Eyes of the World to open a path toward changing the future. 887

Transformation and Mobility

Bayonetta possesses magical mobility beyond ordinary physical limits.

  • Recalled the ability to transform into animals as her memories returned. 74
  • Can levitate and descend with iridescent black-and-purple butterfly wings. 310
  • Uses magical wings and artificial gravity to fly, stabilize herself on falling debris, and fight in midair. 78 850
  • Can transform into a feline without casting a spell. 1797

Equipment

  • Elfin Knights — Four crimson handguns forged by Rodin, worn in Bayonetta's hands and on her heels. They convert her magic into physical bullets and require no conventional ammunition while her magic holds. 53
  • Shura Blade / Ryoko Blade — Rodin's prized purple-magical katana, capable of effortlessly decapitating Affinity Angels. 62
  • Pocket watch — Holds the ruby in which Jeanne sealed Bayonetta five centuries earlier; it later resonates with Balder's runic disc. 75 78
  • Lipstick bullet — A keepsake given by Rosa before her death and later used against Jubileus's Right Eye. 75 80
  • Modified M202 rocket launcher — Uses Rodin-modified anti-armor rounds designed for upper-plane beings. 851
  • Motorcycles — Bayonetta frequently uses magically controlled motorcycles for travel and combat. 62 66

Relationships

  • Salomon — Initially a Kamar-Taj ally seeking her help to locate the Darkhold; their teasing partnership develops into a romantic and familial bond. 43 187 1020
  • Jeanne — Childhood friend, rival, and fellow Umbra Witch. Jeanne sealed Bayonetta away to protect the Left Eye; they later reconcile and defeat Jubileus together. 75 80
  • Rosa — Bayonetta's mother and the previous bearer of the Left Eye. Rosa's death during the Witch Hunts remained central to Bayonetta's lost memories. 60 75
  • Balder — Bayonetta's father, bearer of the Right Eye, and the architect of the plot to awaken Jubileus. Bayonetta ultimately rejects his plan and kills him. 60 80
  • Cereza — Bayonetta's childhood self, displaced five hundred years into the present by Balder's time magic. Caring for Cereza helps awaken Bayonetta's Left Eye. 76 78
  • Madame Butterfly — Contracted demon and powerful recurring summon. 846 855
  • Rodin — Fallen Angel craftsman and proprietor of the Gates of Hell Bar; repairs and forges Bayonetta's weapons. 53 62
  • Loki — Bayonetta's son, who arrives to assist her during the past-era conflict. 879
