Background / History

Madara was the Uchiha Clan's head during the Warring States Era and had fought Senju Hashirama since childhood. Though they were rivals, they shared a dream of ending the era's cycle of clan warfare. He was known as the Rose of the Battlefield and the Ninja Asura for his combat ability. 1 2

When Hashirama attacked in grief over Tobirama's near-fatal injuries, Madara initially faced him alone. His Mangekyo-powered Susanoo began failing under Hashirama's Wood Release, but Izuna and Yan joined him; the three Uchiha defeated Hashirama together. 1

After the battle, Madara offered to sacrifice his own life to compel Hashirama to form an alliance rather than perpetuate the war. Hashirama accepted, leading to the Senju–Uchiha alliance and the founding of Konoha. 2

Madara was formally chosen as Konoha's First Hokage. He initially argued that Hashirama could take the position, but Hashirama endorsed Madara on the grounds that Madara had initiated reconciliation. 3
