Background

Avril was a child slave aboard a slave ship seized by Ye Feng and Marshall D. Teach. Frightened upon waking amid the aftermath of the takeover, she was reassured by Ye Feng, who intervened when Teach and Doc Q frightened her further 2.

After Ye Feng told her that he had once been like her, Avril asked him to become her brother. He accepted her as his younger sister, beginning the bond that defines her early story 3. Teach subsequently trained both children in Haki and swordsmanship for a year before departing for the New World 3.

With their funds exhausted after Ye Feng used Teach's treasure to build a ship, Avril and Ye Feng became pirate hunters. She fought the Hungry Wolf Pirates alongside him, clearing their lesser crew members while Ye Feng faced Captain Gral 3 4.

Garp later adopted Avril and Ye Feng as his grandchildren, giving her the name Monkey D. Avril and placing both children under Curly Dadan's care 16 17. When Ye Feng left for Frost Moon Village to train, he asked Avril in a letter to become a Marine before his return 18.

Over the following four years, Avril entered the Marines, became a Marine Headquarters sergeant, and trained under Vice Admiral Peach Rabbit at Marineford. She continued training intensely in anticipation of her appointment with Ye Feng 36.

During Ye Feng's absence, the senior Marines also accepted Avril as an official's child: Garp and Sengoku regard her as family, while Vice Admiral Crane became her acknowledged grandmother. Peach Rabbit, likewise an official's child, became Avril's god-sister and primary companion at Marine Headquarters 57 58.

After reuniting with Ye Feng at Marine Headquarters, Avril began receiving martial-arts instruction from him. He transmitted the Nine Yin Manual to her, helped her cultivate internal energy, and trained her privately in order to push her swordsmanship beyond its previous plateau 64 65 66.

Avril is deeply attached to Ye Feng and initially depends on him for safety and direction. She accepts his decision to separate for training only after he promises to visit her once she joins the Marines 8 9.

She is possessive and jealous where Ye Feng is concerned, openly objecting when Vice Admiral Verne attempts to arrange Miranda's engagement to him. Avril repeatedly insists that Ye Feng should marry only her in the future 6 7 8.

Despite her dependence on Ye Feng, she is determined and hardworking. At Marineford, she refuses Peach Rabbit's offer of rest because she wants to grow stronger before reuniting with her brother 36.
