Background / History

Ellie was born to the Aier couple in Bock Town. At age two, she accidentally ate the Paramecia-type Misfortune Fruit; its uncontrolled effects subsequently caused her parents to die through misfortune. The villagers of Boke Village came to regard her as a monster after further deaths associated with her ability, leaving her alone, fearful, and abused. 25 31

While being threatened by a fish-man, Ellie became the target of Luo Ze's hidden mission: rescue her and make her his family. Luo Ze killed the fish-man and took her away, but she collapsed from a severe fever soon afterward. He brought her to Boke Village for treatment and personally fed her medicine and cared for her through the night. 25 27

The villagers attempted to drive Ellie out when fish-men came searching for her, but Luo Ze protected her and defeated the attacking force. Once recovered, she accepted his invitation to leave Boke Village and began calling him “big brother,” completing the hidden mission that formally made her his family. 28 31 33

Aboard the Ghost Sword, Ellie experienced safety, proper food, bathing facilities, and comfort for the first time. Luo Ze later brought her to Dog Town, bought her new clothes, and began teaching her swordsmanship after she was bullied by nobles while briefly left alone. 32 34 35

After Luo Ze was gravely injured in his conflict with Marine Vice Admirals Momonga and Onigumo, Ellie spent approximately a year helping keep them alive. Despite being only around five and a half years old, she fished to feed both herself and the unconscious Luo Ze. During this period, Crocus frequently visited, provided medicine, and began teaching Ellie medical knowledge. 63 68

Ellie continued accompanying Luo Ze through the Grand Line and East Blue. She trained under increasingly demanding gravity conditions, assisted him during dangerous voyages, and acted on his orders during raids against Marine branches. 77 91 127

While fleeing Admiral Kizaru, Ellie refused Luo Ze's order to escape alone using the Ghost Sword's Coup de Burst. After Kizaru captured and tortured her to torment Luo Ze, he pierced her chest with a light attack and threw her into the sea; both Luo Ze and the wider world believed her dead. 134 137 138 141

Ellie nevertheless survived. She eventually washed ashore on an isolated island inhabited by the former Bass Pirates, where Tell and his wife found her and Bell treated her critical injuries. The trauma left her with amnesia, and the islanders renamed her “Sea.” 143 300

After leaving the island with Tell, Ellie was captured by human traffickers and sold as a slave. Luo Ze recognized her at a slave auction, rescued her from a Celestial Dragon, and confirmed her identity through her unchanged love of food and familiar habits. Although she did not recognize him, Luo Ze brought her aboard the World-Breaking Ship and resolved to restore her memories through the Memory Fruit. 303 305 306 307

Appearance

Initially dirty and dressed in ragged clothing, Ellie is later cleaned and given new outfits by Luo Ze. She is described as a small, adorable girl with fair, tender skin and large blue eyes. 27 31 34

  • Large blue eyes. 31
  • Wore a purple dress after shopping in Dog Town. 34
  • Carries the cursed short blade Snow Joy after Luo Ze purchases it for her. 43 50
  • Was identified by the slave traders and auction attendees as a silver-haired girl during her period of amnesia. 306
  • Was called “Sea” while living without her memories. 300 307

Personality

Ellie is initially timid, introverted, insecure, and wary of others due to her isolation and mistreatment in Boke Village. Luo Ze's concern for her safety and his lack of disgust toward her gradually earn her trust. 31

She is obedient, affectionate toward Luo Ze, and regards him as the closest person in her life. She is also highly curious about new places and especially enthusiastic about delicious food. 33 34 50

Luo Ze's influence changes her outlook on violence and kindness. By the time of the Haier Island incident, she accepts that those who mistreat her or Luo Ze deserve to die; during the journey to Loguetown, her remarks toward a Sea King reflect this harsher attitude. 32 39 50

As her swordsmanship improves, Ellie becomes proud and combative toward those who belittle Luo Ze. She takes particular offense at Zoro's ambition to surpass him and openly gloats after defeating both Zoro and Luffy. 99

Ellie possesses intense loyalty toward Luo Ze and refuses to abandon him even when doing so would save her life. 134 Following her amnesia, she remains compassionate and protective of others, pleading for the liberation of the other slaves even while she herself is captive. 307

Abilities & Skills

Misfortune Fruit

Ellie possesses the Paramecia-type Misfortune Fruit, which originally caused misfortune to those around her without her control. 25

  • Direct contact reduces another person's Luck Value to zero, causing potentially lethal accidents within a day. 25
  • Examples of its effects include choking while eating or drinking and encountering disasters at sea. 25
  • The ability does not affect Luo Ze. 25
  • After training, Ellie can activate and suppress the fruit's power at will rather than continuously affecting people around her. 50
  • She can infuse misfortune into Snow Joy; targets struck by the blade will suffer misfortune even if the attack does not kill them. 50

Swordsmanship

Luo Ze begins teaching Ellie swordsmanship after the Dog Town bullying incident, so that she can protect herself and eventually protect him. 35

  • Her talent and willingness to train allow her to progress rapidly despite her age. 38
  • Within a month, her physical ability reaches roughly the level of an ordinary pirate lackey. 38
  • She learns Moonwalk and is capable of fighting smaller Sea Kings. 50
  • Her attack power remains insufficient against heavily scaled Sea Kings. 50
  • She can use Shave and demonstrated enough skill to defeat Marine Sergeant Tashigi. 56
  • Her style differs greatly from Luo Ze's Army-Breaker Swordsmanship: rather than relying on overwhelming single strikes, her movements flow continuously like waves, with each successive attack building upon the last. 71
  • By the time of her encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates, she can defeat both Zoro and Luffy decisively. 99

Misfortune Slash

Ellie channels the Misfortune Fruit through Snow Joy to launch a black sword slash. 50

  • Split a large wave and struck a Sea King. 50
  • Can hurt, but failed to wound, a Sea King protected by tough scales. 50
  • Carries the Misfortune Fruit's effect when delivered through Snow Joy. 50

Medical Knowledge

Ellie began learning medicine from Crocus during Luo Ze's year-long incapacitation. 68

  • She has a strong foundation in medical knowledge and displayed exceptional aptitude for study. 68 111
  • She mastered the Marine medical theories available aboard the Ghost Sword within half a month. 111
  • She practiced her studies by catching fish and using them for practical medical experiments. 111
