Appearance
The Mangekyo Sharingan retains the Sharingan's scarlet iris but replaces its tomoe with an individual black pattern. Its ocular power is repeatedly described as cold, sinister, vast, and far beyond that of a three-tomoe Sharingan. 6 48 127
- Uchiha Mirai's pattern — three evenly spaced fan blades surrounding a central dot; it resembles a nuclear-radiation symbol. 13
- Uchiha Shisui's pattern — black shapes resembling shuriken. 48
- Activation — three black tomoe spin and reshape into the wielder's Mangekyo pattern. 6 41
History
The Mangekyo Sharingan was considered little more than a legend among ordinary Uchiha, many of whom believed the three-tomoe Sharingan was the bloodline's highest possible stage. Uchiha Setsuna, who had personally seen Uchiha Madara's Mangekyo, identified it as the same godlike power once wielded by Madara. 6
Its return became public when Uchiha Fugaku activated his Mangekyo during his battle with Uchiha Mirai at the Naka River. Mirai immediately answered with his own Mangekyo, making the appearance of two pairs on a single day a historic event for the Uchiha Clan. Fugaku ultimately yielded the clan-head position after realizing Mirai had planned their confrontation for three years. 6
Uchiha Shisui possessed the clan's third Mangekyo but, following Mirai's warnings, concealed both its existence and its ocular technique from Konoha's higher-ups. The combined threat of three Mangekyo wielders later forced Sarutobi Hiruzen's faction to acknowledge that it could no longer readily suppress the Uchiha. 11 62
Uchiha Itachi became the fourth known wielder at age eleven after Orochimaru threatened Sasuke. His awakening expanded the clan's strength, but also exposed the Mangekyo's severe physical burden on an immature body. 127 132
Known Wielders
| Wielder | Documented Ocular Technique(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha Fugaku | Futodama no Mikoto — left eye roughly sees changes over coming years; right eye foresees an opponent's next five seconds in battle. 126 | Initially hid his Mangekyo from the clan; rarely uses it because depleted ocular power can result in blindness. 6 132 |
| Uchiha Mirai | Amenotokotachi; Amenominaka; Domain Expansion. 13 | His Mangekyo's three fan-blade pattern is associated with nuclear radiation. 13 |
| Uchiha Shisui | Kotoamatsukami — alters a target's will. 48 | Its secrecy was strategically important to Mirai's plans against Konoha's leadership. 11 48 |
| Uchiha Itachi | Tsukuyomi; Amaterasu. 135 | Awakened while defending Sasuke; later manifests a scarlet skeletal Susanoo. 127 171 |
| Uchiha Obito | Kamui — connects to a space-time dimension; the recovered eye in Mirai's possession launches spatial attacks. 13 73 | Obito reclaims Kakashi's Sharingan before Mirai seizes it from him. 71 72 |
Abilities & Skills
Ocular Power Beyond Three Tomoe
The Mangekyo Sharingan is an evolution beyond the three-tomoe Sharingan, possessing far greater ocular power and specialized techniques unique to each eye and wielder. 6 131
- Its activation can exert enough pressure to force another Mangekyo wielder, such as Shisui, to activate his own eyes in resistance. 48
- Its users are regarded as strategic threats comparable to the strongest ninja of the era. 11 62 168
- A pair of Mangekyo Sharingan is considered necessary to unleash the eyes' greatest potential. 68
Susanoo
Mangekyo wielders can manifest Susanoo, a colossal chakra construct used for offense and defense. Fugaku, Mirai, and Shisui simultaneously summoned red, black, and green Susanoo during the confrontation with Konoha. 61
- Mirai's skeletal Susanoo blocked the Fourth Raikage's lightning-infused attacks and struck him away with massive arms. 94
- Mirai's Susanoo wields a scarlet greatsword capable of releasing flaming sword energies. 122
- Itachi manifests a scarlet skeletal Susanoo during his incursion into Sunagakure. 171
Amenotokotachi
Uchiha Mirai's left-eye technique connects to and shapes an independent world capable of evolving on its own. He calls this realm the High Plain of Heaven. 13
- The High Plain of Heaven is a real world rather than a genjutsu. 13
- Mirai can enter and leave it through his Mangekyo Sharingan. 13
- Its evolution is affected by the Godzilla within Mirai, eventually supporting his plan to create a monster planet. 64 73
Amenominaka
Uchiha Mirai's right-eye technique allows him to control every rule within the High Plain of Heaven. 13
- With sufficient ocular power, Mirai can transform substances and terrain within the world, such as changing an ancient battlefield into a boundless sea. 13
- Major alterations consume an “extremely terrifying” amount of ocular power. 13
- Attempting to use the realm's rules to directly evolve his Mangekyo into the Rinnegan nearly drained Mirai's ocular power completely. 63
Domain Expansion
Domain Expansion is Mirai's combat application of the High Plain of Heaven: he forcibly transports enemies into his world, where he controls the surrounding rules and their lives. 13
- Mirai transported six Root operatives into a desolate battlefield beneath a blood-red moon. 41
- The Root operatives, including five jonin, were unable to resist the rules of Mirai's world and were killed within it. 41
- Mirai intends to develop the realm into a “Monster Planet” by transferring Godzilla into it. 13 64
Kotoamatsukami
Shisui's Mangekyo technique alters a target's will. Mirai considered using it against Danzo, while also recognizing that its effects could create serious political risks if discovered. 48
- Mirai believes Kotoamatsukami does not reach the threshold of a rule-based ability. 48
- If affected, Mirai believes he could use the High Plain of Heaven's rules to correct his consciousness and overwrite its influence. 48
Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu
Itachi's Mangekyo grants him one technique in each eye: Tsukuyomi in his left eye and Amaterasu in his right. 135
- Tsukuyomi traps targets in a genjutsu where perceived time and pain are drastically intensified; Orochimaru experienced what felt like hours of torture in an instant. 127
- Amaterasu manifests as a powerful black flame technique, first appearing when Itachi awakens his Mangekyo against Orochimaru. 127
Time and Space-Time Techniques
Fugaku's Mangekyo uses time-based ocular techniques, while Obito's Kamui connects to a separate space-time dimension. 13 126
- Fugaku's left eye offers rough insight into future changes over years. 126
- Fugaku's right eye can perceive an enemy's actions up to five seconds ahead in combat. 126
- Kamui functions as a key that opens and closes access to another dimension, unlike Mirai's ability to govern the rules of his own world. 13
Limitations
- The Mangekyo Sharingan's immense power places severe strain on the wielder's body, particularly when the body cannot adapt to its strong Yin Release. 135
- Exhausting ocular power can result in total blindness; Fugaku therefore avoids using his Mangekyo unnecessarily. 132
- Itachi's early awakening worsened his already severe bloodline disease and left him unconscious after fighting Orochimaru. 132 139
- Hashirama Cells or an Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan are stated to greatly improve the problem of Mangekyo-induced deterioration. 60

Trivia

- The Rinnegan is stated to surpass the Sharingan and to evolve from it, though reaching it requires immense talent, effort, and energy accumulation. 130 136
