Background / History
S.H.I.E.L.D. initially investigates Loki after his unexplained appearance at the Four Seasons Hotel. Its intelligence network cannot uncover any record of his past, leading Nick Fury to order Phil Coulson to search outward from the hotel with several agent teams. 6
Tony Stark's disappearance exposes the organization to threats beyond conventional technology. Coulson brings John Constantine to the investigation; after Constantine identifies a summoned entity as a demon, Coulson concludes that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s knowledge of the world is severely incomplete. Fury subsequently attempts to recruit Constantine, but Constantine refuses to trust the agency. 14 15 16
A covert search of Constantine's agency leads to the theft of a cursed black maneki-neko. The curse spreads through everyone who handles it, bringing disastrous luck to S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel and helping Coulson realize that an internal mole may be involved. In reality, Hydra operatives Grant Ward and Brock Rumlow exploit their positions within S.H.I.E.L.D. to steal intelligence and target superpowered subjects. 18 19 38
As threats escalate, S.H.I.E.L.D. develops specialized devices to detect parasitic monsters and classifies Shadaloo as an international terrorist criminal organization. It also begins investigating the Ten Rings, the Ethereal Immortal Realm, the Demon Realm, and other emerging forces beyond its prior intelligence reach. 26 31 50
The agency expands its external cooperation through an exchange program with East Country's S.P.E.A.R. and intelligence-sharing with Interpol concerning Shadaloo. Its reliance on specialists such as Constantine, Li Ang, Da Wenxi, Deadpool, and other independent heroes becomes increasingly apparent during supernatural emergencies. 74 83 94 133
During the Hiss crisis, S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters is engulfed by red mist that infects personnel, alters the building's interior, and threatens New York City. Fury acknowledges that an extra-dimensional life-form is beyond the organization's usual preparedness; the crisis is ultimately resolved with outside assistance, including the Ancient One. 138 139 148 151
Later operations include safeguarding or researching dangerous artifacts such as the Killing Stone Fragment and investigating Umbrella Corporation's biochemical technology and New Humanity God-Creation Plan. The Fragment is eventually stolen from the Triskelion by Ada Wong. 223 229 231 232
