Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall man with long white hair. He wears a forehead protector bearing the character for “oil” and carries a large scroll on his back. 15

Personality

Jiraiya initially presents himself as flamboyant, shameless, and overly proud of his writing career. When caught spying on women, he insists that he is merely “gathering material,” and he is easily embarrassed when Chenshu points out the obvious. 15 21

Despite his frivolous habits, he becomes serious when discussing the dangers surrounding Chenshu, Orochimaru’s activities, and the abnormal chakra detected at Mount Myoboku. He recognizes that Chenshu’s Wood Release makes him a target and urges him to gain real experience beyond the village. 15 20 21

Traveling with Chenshu regularly tests Jiraiya’s patience. He pays for their food and lodging while Chenshu deliberately chooses expensive meals, leaving Jiraiya frustrated and nearly broke. 21 22

Chunin Exams Intermission

Jiraiya encounters Chenshu in Konoha’s commercial district after Chenshu’s battle with Kidomaru damages the preliminary arena. He is caught watching the women’s bathhouse, then reveals his identity as the Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku. 15

After recognizing Chenshu as the Senju descendant responsible for the Wood Release-created forest, Jiraiya warns him against being too conspicuous. He also gives him a lead on Tsunade’s whereabouts: Hot Springs Town north of Tanzaku Town. 15

Post-Konoha Crush Journey

Following the Third Hokage’s death and Orochimaru’s retreat, Jiraiya decides to leave Konoha to investigate Orochimaru and seek a new Hokage candidate. He invites Chenshu to travel with him, arguing that Chenshu needs experience outside the village. 20

Jiraiya offers Sage Jutsu instruction during the journey, gives Chenshu his Chakra Control Notes, and reveals the troubling chakra anomaly on Mount Myoboku. 21

Sound Ninja Remnants

While traveling with Chenshu, Jiraiya helps investigate an attack on wounded Hidden Leaf ANBU by Sound Ninja remnants. Though initially distracted by the female enemy ninja, he accompanies Chenshu through the aftermath and follows him to an inn after Chenshu claims the enemies’ funds for dinner. 22
