Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall man with long white hair. He wears a forehead protector bearing the character for “oil” and carries a large scroll on his back. 15

Personality

Jiraiya initially presents himself as flamboyant, shameless, and overly proud of his writing career. When caught spying on women, he insists that he is merely “gathering material,” and he is easily embarrassed when Chenshu points out the obvious. 15 21

His lecherous habits persist throughout his travels. He repeatedly uses his authorial “research” as an excuse for ogling women, proposes visiting Tanzaku Town’s geisha houses, and enthusiastically sketches the restrained Tayuya despite her anger. 24 32 39 45

Despite his frivolous habits, he becomes serious when discussing the dangers surrounding Chenshu, Orochimaru’s activities, and the abnormal chakra detected at Mount Myoboku. He recognizes that Chenshu’s Wood Release makes him a target and urges him to gain real experience beyond the village. 15 20 21

Jiraiya is notably protective of Chenshu when Akatsuki moves against him. He warns Chenshu not to meet Itachi Uchiha’s eyes, places himself between Chenshu and the Akatsuki pair, and uses Toad Mouth Bind to prevent Itachi and Kisame from escaping. 41 42

Chunin Exams Intermission

Jiraiya encounters Chenshu in Konoha’s commercial district after Chenshu’s battle with Kidomaru damages the preliminary arena. He is caught watching the women’s bathhouse, then reveals his identity as the Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku. 15

After recognizing Chenshu as the Senju descendant responsible for the Wood Release-created forest, Jiraiya warns him against being too conspicuous. He also gives him a lead on Tsunade’s whereabouts: Hot Springs Town north of Tanzaku Town. 15

Post-Konoha Crush Journey

Following the Third Hokage’s death and Orochimaru’s retreat, Jiraiya decides to leave Konoha to investigate Orochimaru and seek a new Hokage candidate. He invites Chenshu to travel with him, arguing that Chenshu needs experience outside the village. 20

Jiraiya offers Sage Jutsu instruction during the journey, gives Chenshu his Chakra Control Notes, and reveals the troubling chakra anomaly on Mount Myoboku. 21

While traveling with Chenshu, Jiraiya helps investigate an attack on wounded Hidden Leaf ANBU by Sound Ninja remnants. Though initially distracted by the female enemy ninja, he accompanies Chenshu through the aftermath and follows him to an inn after Chenshu claims the enemies’ funds for dinner. 22

After Chenshu intercepts the Sound ninja during Sasuke’s defection incident, Jiraiya finds him surrounded by defeated Sound ninja and Kimimaro. He is then used as the nominal captor in Chenshu’s cover story and provides official backing for the captured ninja’s transfer into Chenshu’s custody. 31 33 35

Jiraiya also sketches Tayuya while she is restrained, provoking her fury and contributing to the confrontation that lures Orochimaru into revealing his intentions toward Chenshu. 32

Amegakure Warning and Akatsuki Interception

While traveling toward Tanzaku Town, Jiraiya warns Chenshu that his Amegakure intelligence network has gone silent and that the region’s situation has become ominous. 39

After Chenshu captures an Amegakure scout and obtains Akatsuki’s interception order, Jiraiya confirms that Akatsuki has designated Chenshu as a highest-priority target and deployed a special squad to kill him. 40

When Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki confront them, Jiraiya attempts to shield Chenshu and warns him against looking into Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan. After Chenshu overwhelms the pair, Jiraiya uses Toad Mouth Bind to combine with the Wood Release enclosure and cut off their escape. Tanzaku Town and the Three Sannin Battle

Jiraiya reaches Tanzaku Town with Chenshu and locates Tsunade at a casino. He initially follows Chenshu’s plan to approach her indirectly, though Chenshu intends to use Jiraiya’s unreliable reputation to draw Tsunade’s anger. 45 46

Orochimaru’s negotiation with Tsunade erupts into an early battle among the Three Sannin. Jiraiya fights beside Tsunade and gathers sage chakra to oppose Orochimaru, while Chenshu disrupts Orochimaru’s plans and forces his humiliating retreat. 46 47

Following the battle, Jiraiya witnesses Chenshu rapidly master Hashirama’s medical-ninjutsu legacy and accepts that his student’s talent exceeds ordinary standards. He remains with Tsunade as she agrees to return to Konoha and accept the Fifth Hokage appointment. 48 50

Sunagakure Aid Request

After returning to Konoha, Jiraiya receives Sunagakure’s emergency request for assistance and urgently informs Tsunade and Chenshu. He reports that two Akatsuki members breached Sunagakure’s defenses, abducted Gaara after his battle to defend the village, and left Kankuro severely injured following his pursuit. 91
