Background / History

Tang San is introduced as the monitor of Luo Yihe's class at Nuoding Academy. Luo Yihe repeatedly antagonizes him, calls him “Little Blackie,” and drives a wedge between him and Xiao Wu; Tang San is usually unable to retaliate effectively. 1 2 3

His father, Tang Hao, attempts to avenge him after one of Luo Yihe's early confrontations, but Mew defeats Tang Hao on multiple occasions. Tang San remains unaware of this at the time. 3

Although Luo Yihe initially excludes and bullies him, Tang San longs for companionship and gradually becomes part of the group travelling toward Shrek Academy. He is particularly moved when Luo Yihe, Xiao Wu, and Xiao Chenghe include him in a celebratory meal. 6 7

At Shrek Academy, Tang San repeatedly tries to avoid direct conflict with Luo Yihe, recognizing the threat posed by Luo Yihe, Xiao Chenghe, and Mew. He is nonetheless drawn into their disputes, including the conflict with Evil Soul Masters and repeated public humiliations. 17 18

In Star Dou Forest, Tang San gains the Eight Spider Lances after killing a Man-Faced Demon Spider and begins questioning Yu Xiaogang's teachings after witnessing Zhu Zhuqing absorb a much older spirit ring than he had believed possible. 32

During a later battle with another Man-Faced Demon Spider, Luo Yihe kills Tang San and removes the Eight Spider Lances. Tang San revives with his God King memories intact, recognizes Huo Yuhao as his son-in-law, and vows revenge against Luo Yihe and Xiao Chenghe. 49

Tang San deeply desires friendship, belonging, and a family-like bond after growing up without parental affection. This desire leads him to tolerate Luo Yihe's insults and remain near his group despite their hostile history. 6 7

He is proud and stubborn, especially when humiliated. Luo Yihe repeatedly exploits this trait, most notably when Tang San initially refuses to call him “Daddy” in exchange for an alleged antidote. 46

Tang San can also be pragmatic when threatened. He attempts to placate Luo Yihe rather than provoke a fight in the alley confrontation, shocking his Shrek companions with his unusually submissive approach. 17

After regaining his God King identity, he becomes markedly more calculating and dangerous, retaining a personal grudge over his death and the loss of the Eight Spider Lances. 49 50
