Abilities & Mechanics
Healing and Recovery
Flash of Light summons Holy Light to heal allies for one mana point in Rod’s system 6.
- Can be cast on the user: Rod’s first demonstration targets himself 7.
- That casting also envelops the surrounding party, restoring depleted strength and removing fatigue 7.
- Rod’s enhanced version is stronger than the Flash of Light Arthas had just used; Holy Light remains somewhat more effective when Rod later learns it from Uther 7 30.
Offensive Use
The spell’s system description explicitly permits attacks against undead and demonic creatures 6.
- Paladins cast Flash of Light alongside Holy Light against Faceless Ones in Tyr’s Tomb, burning their flesh 40.
- During the battle with Zakaz, Rod calls on everyone capable of wielding Holy Light to attack the creature with Flash of Light 46.
Protection Against Mental Corrosion
Flash of Light also supports resistance to the shadow influence within Tyr’s Tomb 40 45.
- Rod illuminates himself with the spell while combining Arcane Intellect and Blessing of Wisdom to strengthen his mental defenses 40.
- Holy Light Elementals repeatedly cast it on nearby allies to dispel mental corrosion during the descent toward Zakaz 45.
- This does not establish immunity to the Old Gods: Rod explicitly recognizes that their direct whispers would exceed his ability to resist 40.
Air Magic Scaling
Rod discovers that Flash of Light receives Air Magic bonuses. These are available enhancement tiers, not documented Air Magic advancements he has attained 11.
| Air Magic Tier | Effect on Flash of Light |
|---|---|
| Basic | Increases healing and damage against demons and undead by 15% 11. |
| Intermediate | Increases the bonus to 30% 11. |
| Advanced | Increases spell power by 50% 11. |
Appearance
- Rod’s self-cast produces a golden pillar descending from the sky, bathing his entire body in brilliant light 7.
- The radiance spreads to those nearby, who experience warmth and renewed strength 7.
Story Role
Establishing Rod’s Holy Light Abilities
Flash of Light is one of the first two Azeroth spells Rod learns through Eagle Eye. Its acquisition reveals that his skill can learn from friendly or neutral participants rather than only enemies, encouraging him to travel with Arthas and Jaina 6 7.
Rod’s public demonstration changes Arthas’s attitude toward him: recognizing another Holy Light wielder, the prince welcomes him into the plague investigation. His subsequent use of Frostbolt astonishes Jaina, who regards the coexistence of arcane power and Holy Light in one caster as a major discovery 7 8.
Tyr’s Tomb Expedition
The spell remains useful after Rod acquires more advanced paladin magic. He uses it intermittently during the Faceless One battles, while newly unlocked Holy Light Spirits possess both Flash of Light and Holy Light as innate spells 41 44. Their repeated casts help protect the expedition from mental corrosion before the confrontation with Zakaz 45.
