Background / History

Thor first appears in New Mexico after being stripped of his divine power. Desperate to reclaim Mjolnir and return to Asgard, he storms the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility surrounding the hammer, only to find that he is no longer worthy to lift it 12.

When Loki sends the Destroyer to kill him, Thor offers his own life to spare the people around him. Watching Jiang Li contain the Destroyer's self-destruction to protect everyone teaches Thor that worthiness is rooted in sacrifice rather than strength or royal status 14. He later departs Earth with Mjolnir restored, intending to stop Loki and protect the Nine Realms 15.

Thor returns during Loki's invasion of Earth, initially clashing with Tony Stark over custody of Loki. Jiang Li forces the two to stop fighting and persuades Thor to cooperate with the Avengers against their shared enemy 20. From that point onward, Thor repeatedly fights beside the team against threats including Hulk, Ultron, Hela, and Thanos 22 41 87.

After being stranded on Sakaar, Thor reunites with Jiang Li and forms an even closer bond with him during the gladiator uprising 61. During Ragnarok, Hela destroys much of what Thor once relied upon, including his certainty that Asgard was merely a place. Thor accepts that Asgard is its people, awakens as the true God of Thunder, and chooses the destruction of the realm itself to end Hela's reign 68.

Thanos later captures Thor aboard the Asgardian refugee ship, but Jiang Li helps save him and evacuate the survivors 69 70. Thor returns to Earth armed with Stormbreaker and combines his lightning with Jiang Li's Feedback transformation, severely wounding Thanos 86 87.

Thor is proud, direct, and fiercely protective. Early in his story, he defines himself through his status, power, and possession of Mjolnir; losing the hammer leaves him devastated because he believes it represents his identity 12.

His experiences on Earth temper that arrogance. Jiang Li's willingness to risk himself for civilians forces Thor to reconsider what makes someone worthy, while his later decision to destroy Asgard rather than let Hela rule it shows his growth into a leader willing to sacrifice what he loves for his people 14 68.
