Background / History

S.H.I.E.L.D. identified Jiang Li as a sixteen-year-old orphan after satellite footage captured his transformations during the Hulk incident. They classified him as the Level Ten threat “Omni,” believing his watch-like device was the source of his alien forms. Jiang Li rejected Natasha Romanoff’s offer of S.H.I.E.L.D. protection, warning Nick Fury not to pursue or control him. 4 5

Initially broke, Jiang Li used Diamondhead to create and sell an azure gemstone for $50,000. Tony Stark subsequently recruited him as Stark Industries’ Chief Special Technical Consultant after Jiang Li merged with and improved Tony’s armor, exposing its inefficient circuitry and weak firewall. 5 6 7

At Stark Industries, Jiang Li uncovered Obadiah Stane’s Iron Monger project and deduced Stane’s plan to replace Tony and seize the Arc Reactor in his chest. His technical insight and willingness to confront threats made him Tony’s close ally rather than an employee under his control. 8
