Background / History

After the Fourth Hokage's death, Fugaku was presented as a potential Hokage candidate during Konoha's leadership discussions. Hyuga Hitoshi's public support deeply impressed him; Fugaku quickly came to regard Hitoshi as a trustworthy “brother” and discussed Konoha's recovery with him from the perspective of a village leader 2.

Konoha's surveillance of the Uchiha Clan intensified Fugaku's resentment toward the village leadership. He sought Hitoshi's counsel over how to respond, then increased Uchiha patrols and inspections as grounds to detain suspected monitors. Although he wanted to challenge the higher-ups and restore Uchiha influence, he had to balance the demands of increasingly aggressive clansmen and the authority of the clan elders 10 13 16 37 40.

Fugaku opposed Sarutobi Hiruzen's attempt to keep the Uchiha in Konoha as rear-area guards, believing the clan needed frontline merit and political gains rather than goodwill alone. The Uchiha's eventual battlefield performance cleared much of their suspicion over the Nine-Tails attack and elevated their standing among Konoha's civilians, though Fugaku remained dissatisfied without greater authority 35 37.

Fugaku is proud, status-conscious, and highly sensitive to perceived disrespect toward the Uchiha Clan.
