Background

In his previous life, Tang San was an outer-sect disciple of the Tang Sect. Barred from its inner teachings, he secretly studied its ultimate arts and ultimately died after leaping from a cliff. His desire to obtain the Tang Sect’s complete inheritance remains central to his identity after reincarnation. 89

In Douluo Continent, he becomes a member of the Shrek Seven Monsters and studies under Yu Xiaogang. He considers Xiao Wu his little sister and is fiercely protective of her, immediately rushing into the Star Dou Great Forest when he believes she may be in danger. 59 74

Tang San is the biological son of Tang Hao and a descendant of the Clear Sky Sect. He initially believes his father to be an ordinary blacksmith whose life revolves around drinking and forging iron. When Tang Hao takes him away from Shrek Academy and reveals the pressure of a Titled Douluo, Tang San realizes that his father has concealed his true strength. Tang Hao brings him to Slaughter City, where he spends several months fighting to survive. 9 145

His mother, Ah Yin, was a hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor who had taken human form. According to Tang Hao’s account, Qian Xunji and two other Titled Douluos pursued the couple, and Ah Yin sacrificed her Soul Ring and Soul Bone to save Tang Hao and their child. Tang San had heard part of this history before, but learns the full account during Tang Chen’s confrontation with his father. Tang Chen is subsequently confirmed to be Tang San’s great-grandfather. 154

After his time in Slaughter City, Tang San resides at the Clear Sky Sect. His mixed human and soul-beast parentage becomes a source of hostility from Tang Tian, who insults him over his birth. Tang San later states that he has spent years cultivating within the sect and has reached rank 45, placing himself among its strongest younger members. He seeks permission to enter the All-Continent Genius Soul Master Tournament both to gain combat experience and to search for Xiao Wu. 182 207

Personality

Tang San is observant, analytical, and highly adaptable in combat. Rather than relying on one method, he combines Martial Soul abilities, movement techniques, poison knowledge, and hidden weapons according to the situation. 75 76

He sees himself as principled and disciplined, but his fixation on Tang Sect techniques can override that self-image. After witnessing Jiang Lan use advanced arts associated with the Tang Sect, he becomes consumed by doubts about whether his former knowledge was incomplete; this eventually drives him to break into Jiang Lan’s residence and steal the Sunflower Manual. 80 82 89

His shame makes him secretive when cornered. Rather than explain that Jiang Lan’s traps drugged him during the theft, he allows his companions to believe a damaging false explanation, isolating himself from Xiao Wu and the rest of Shrek. 91 92

Repeated defeats intensify his possessiveness toward martial knowledge. After Jiang Lan overwhelms Shrek in the tournament, Tang San outwardly remains polite but privately concludes that Jiang Lan’s strength must come from Tang Sect Secret Arts. He resolves to recover those techniques by whatever method is necessary, viewing Jiang Lan’s public use of them as an insult to the Tang Sect. This conviction leads to a second attempted theft despite the consequences of his first intrusion. 108 109

His pride coexists with harsh self-criticism. After escaping Jiang Lan’s traps again, he bitterly imagines how his former Tang Sect peers would react to a disciple being reduced to such a state by a six-year-old’s defenses. His subsequent withdrawal leaves him pale, unsteady, and largely confined to his room. 110 113

Slaughter City gradually desensitizes him to killing. His earliest killings there make him vomit, but after several months he treats lethal violence as a routine requirement for survival. Tang Chen’s later reprimand leaves him visibly ashamed and unable to defend his thefts, though no lasting change in his conduct is established at that point. 145 154

His attachment to Xiao Wu persists through years without news of her. Knowing that she is a transformed soul beast, he nevertheless defends her as someone who has never harmed others and who fought beside him and saved his life. He insists that greater strength and public renown will enable him to protect her, refusing to retreat from this position when Tang Chen calls it empty talk. Tang Chen describes this stubbornness as resembling Tang Hao’s. 207

Blue Silver Grass

Tang San’s Martial Soul is Blue Silver Grass, which he uses for restraint and battlefield control.

Tang San participates in Shrek Academy’s seven-on-seven match against Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Dugu Yan destroys his Entangling Blue Silver Grass with poison, while Ye Lingling’s unfamiliar palm arts divert his attention and help secure Shrek’s total defeat. 75 76

After the loss, he becomes fixated on Ye Lingling’s techniques, which resemble the Falling Blossoms Sword Technique from his former world. He privately theorizes that her master may be another transmigrator with martial attainments beyond his own. 77

Duel with Jiang Lan

Tang San accepts Jiang Lan’s challenge despite initially refusing to bully a child. Jiang Lan’s Martial Arts Guga form reveals superior versions of familiar Tang Sect arts, including Lightness Skill, acupoint strikes, Swallow’s Return Loop, Cotton Palm, and the Thousand Illusory Shadow Step. 79 80

Shaken by the implication that he learned only incomplete Tang Sect teachings in his previous life, Tang San concedes when Jiang Lan offers to teach him. 80

Theft of the *Sunflower Manual*

Unable to let go of Jiang Lan’s martial knowledge, Tang San secretly enters Jiang Lan’s room to take the Sunflower Manual. He rationalizes the act as reclaiming Tang Sect inheritance rather than theft. 89

Jiang Lan’s traps cover him in foul powder and strike him with a drug-coated needle. Tang San escapes with the manual while disoriented by the substance’s effects. 89 90

The stolen manual remains concealed in Tang San’s room until Yu Xiaogang discovers it while Tang San is absent. Yu Xiaogang takes the book away, becomes obsessed with its cultivation system, and attempts to reinterpret or remove its stated castration prerequisite. Tang San’s theft thus indirectly gives his teacher access to the technique. 99 100

Fallout at Blue Tyrant Academy

Tang San returns to his residence in an impaired state and harms Ma Hongjun. Unable to admit that he stole a manual from Jiang Lan and was incapacitated by a trap, he claims to have “unusual preferences.” 91

The statement horrifies his companions, drives Xiao Wu away, and leaves Tang San emotionally isolated. 91 92

Later Battles

In the opening match of the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Tang San turns the tide against Heaven Dou Royal Academy and secures a narrow Shrek victory. Without the Immortal Herbs that might otherwise have strengthened the team, the battle is difficult, and Tang San finishes visibly exhausted. Shui Yue’er observes that Shrek might have lost if their opponents had not underestimated them. 104

Tang San recognizes that Jiang Lan’s apparently chaotic Little Guga Turtle Punch is not luck, but a display of exceptional instinct and precise timing against Feng Xiaotian. 105

During Shrek’s later battle against Jiang Lan, Tang San attempts a rear attack with Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track. Jiang Lan casually blocks it, numbing Tang San’s arm, before rapidly defeating the rest of the Shrek team. 107

After his failed ambush, Tang San directs the remaining members to surround Jiang Lan, with Ning Rongrong supporting them, Ma Hongjun attacking from the air, and Xiao Wu approaching from the side. When Jiang Lan throws Xiao Wu from the arena, Tang San rushes forward in fury. Jiang Lan punches him in the stomach, sending him into Ning Rongrong and Oscar and eliminating all three. Zhu Zhuqing’s eventual concession ends the match. 107 108

Tang San then questions how Jiang Lan can be so strong at barely over six years old. Jiang Lan’s answers about food, sleep, milk tea, talent, luck, and the Sea God do not satisfy him. Tang San privately attributes the power to Tang Sect Secret Arts and renews his determination to obtain them, while maintaining a polite exterior and promising another arena encounter. Jiang Lan offers food and a shared dinner to ease the defeated team’s mood. 108

Second Intrusion at Honey Snow Ice City

Tang San returns at night in fitted black clothing and a mask, determined to avoid the mistakes of his earlier theft. He waits until Jiang Lan and Doro are asleep, evades the patrolling robots, and enters through a half-open window. Finding a booklet titled Nine Yang Manual, he immediately assumes that it is a Tang Sect secret art and takes it from the cabinet. 109

Removing the book triggers a sequence of defenses: a falling metal net, mechanical Iron Spiders with poisonous silk, orange irritant powder, flying needles, and a concealed pit filled with poison-coated iron caltrops. Tang San’s reflexes and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track keep him from falling into the pit, but he drops the manual and cannot recover it. He escapes with irritated eyes, a numb leg, and a swollen hand. 109

His attempt to force out the poison with the Mysterious Heaven Skill worsens its effects. He staggers back toward Shrek Academy and, in his impaired state, pounces on someone he vaguely perceives on his bed; a scream follows, but the passage does not identify that person. The following morning, Jiang Lan recognizes the damage as evidence of Tang San’s second intrusion and repairs and upgrades the defenses. 110

Dispersal of the Shrek Seven Monsters

After Shrek’s early tournament elimination, the group’s internal relationships deteriorate further. Ning Rongrong loses interest in the academy, Zhu Zhuqing turns to Jiang Lan for instruction, and Ma Hongjun actively avoids Tang San. Tang San remains shut indoors most of the time and appears ashen and physically unsteady when he emerges. Although the academy attempts to suppress discussion of the nighttime incident, rumors spread through smaller social circles within two days. 113

Xiao Wu remains preoccupied with Tang San’s situation, delaying her own plans to train under Jiang Lan. Later, she leaves for the Star Dou Great Forest through a secret passage. Her letter explains that she needs solitude and does not know how to face Tang San, showing that their shared history continues to trouble her. 113 141

Slaughter City

Tang Hao takes Tang San from Shrek Academy to Slaughter City after revealing his concealed strength. Several months of survival fighting change Tang San’s response to violence: killings that initially made him sick become routine. Tang Hao periodically checks on him, criticizes his technique, and promises a major opportunity once he leaves. 145

During one visit, Tang Hao informs him that Jiang Lan is nearby, now eight and a half years old and at level fifty-one. Tang San notices his father’s recently injured arms and is unsettled by Tang Hao’s acknowledgment of Jiang Lan’s strength. After Tang Hao departs, three attackers ambush Tang San. He evades them and wounds one with needles, but Jiang Lan and Doro suddenly fall from above and land on him, knocking him unconscious and worsening his chest injury. Jiang Lan confirms that he is alive and gives him a healing pill, after which his color begins to improve. 145

Jiang Lan and Doro then leave the alley. A scar-faced man subsequently carries Tang San away. 146

Tang Chen’s Discipline

After restoring Tang Chen’s awareness and health, Jiang Lan tells him that Tang San twice entered his room to steal manuals and that Tang Hao attempted to seize a cultivation opportunity from him. Jiang Lan describes the second attempt as a successful theft, although Tang San actually left the Nine Yang Manual behind; Doro notices this discrepancy. Tang Chen nevertheless resolves to confront both descendants and receives Jiang Lan’s rough drawing of Tang San, along with a warning about his concealed needles. 149 150

Tang Chen later subdues Tang San and Tang Hao in a single encounter and whips them for disgracing the Clear Sky lineage. Tang Hao recognizes him as his grandfather, while Tang San initially has no idea who their overwhelmingly powerful captor is. 153

During the subsequent confrontation, Tang Hao recounts Ah Yin’s sacrifice and asks Tang Chen to destroy Spirit Hall. Tang Chen refuses to kill an entire organization for the actions of particular pursuers, insisting on distinguishing genuine enemies from innocent members, workers, and children. He also rebukes Tang San for repeated theft and his conduct after being caught by Jiang Lan’s traps, emphasizing that character is more troubling than a lack of talent. 154

Tang Chen orders both father and son to kneel through the night and reflect. After he leaves, Tang San asks why his great-grandfather will not help them. Tang Hao acknowledges that revenge without identifying the actual guilty parties is indistinguishable from indiscriminate slaughter, and Tang San lowers his head without further reply. 154

Jiang Lan later recounts Tang San’s thefts and the resulting trouble at Shrek Academy to Bo Saixi. She reacts with cold anger and confirms that Tang Chen already knows about the incidents. 170

Cultivation at the Clear Sky Sect

Tang San subsequently appears at the Clear Sky Sect, where Tang Chen instructs Tang Hao to ensure that he trains properly and stops stealing. Tang Chen threatens to hang him up on Clear Sky Peak and whip him personally if another theft is reported. 182

A disciple then informs Tang Chen that Tang San and Tang Tian are fighting at the rear mountain training grounds. Tang San, now noticeably sturdier than during his time in Slaughter City and dressed in gray training clothes, uses steel needles, Flying Locust Stones, and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track against Tang Tian’s Clear Sky Hammer. His hidden weapons cannot penetrate the hammer’s defense, but Tang Tian cannot catch him, and neither gains a decisive advantage. 182

Both immediately stop when Tang Chen intervenes. Tang San explains that Tang Tian called him a “mongrel”; Tang Tian openly justifies the insult by pointing to Tang San’s human father and soul-beast mother. Tang San remains tense and largely expressionless while Tang Chen reacts with exasperation at the sect’s conduct. 182

All-Continent Genius Soul Master Tournament Preparations

After years cultivating within the sect, Tang San asks Tang Chen for permission to enter the All-Continent Genius Soul Master Tournament. He reports reaching level forty-five and argues that the competition, jointly organized by six parties, offers an opportunity to gain experience against strong opponents. When Tang Chen presses him for his other motive, he admits that he wants to see Xiao Wu and hopes she may follow the tournament and appear in Spirit City. He says he has received no news of her for several years. 207

Tang Hao reveals that Xiao Wu is a hundred-thousand-year Soft Bone Rabbit who transformed into a human. Tang San confirms that he already knows and defends her as a former comrade who saved his life. Tang Chen warns that discovery of her identity would make her a target for Soul Masters seeking her Soul Ring and Soul Bone, then demands to know how Tang San intends to protect her. Tang San insists that he will become stronger and earn sufficient standing through the tournament to deter those who would hunt her. Tang Chen dismisses this as empty talk and compares his stubbornness to Tang Hao’s. 207

Tang Chen ultimately permits him to participate, subject to three conditions: he must not cause trouble during the competition; he must return to the Clear Sky Sect afterward regardless of his result and bring Xiao Wu for Tang Chen to meet if he finds her; and he must not use the sect’s name to swagger about or swindle others. Tang San accepts the conditions. 208

Before dismissing him, Tang Chen gives him a Clear Sky Sect passage token and explains that the sect’s Spirit City contact point can help with difficulties beyond his ability to handle. Tang San thanks him and leaves the study. Tang Hao remains behind to express concern about a possible encounter with Spirit Hall, but Tang Chen again insists that revenge must be directed at the individuals responsible for Ah Yin’s pursuit rather than the organization as a whole. Tang San’s departure for Spirit City is not shown in this scene. 208
