Background
In his previous life, Tang San was an outer-sect disciple of the Tang Sect. Barred from its inner teachings, he secretly studied its ultimate arts and ultimately died after leaping from a cliff. His desire to obtain the Tang Sect’s complete inheritance remains central to his identity after reincarnation. 89
In Douluo Continent, he becomes a member of the Shrek Seven Monsters and studies under Yu Xiaogang. He considers Xiao Wu his little sister and is fiercely protective of her, immediately rushing into the Star Dou Great Forest when he believes she may be in danger. 59 74
Personality
Tang San is observant, analytical, and highly adaptable in combat. Rather than relying on one method, he combines Martial Soul abilities, movement techniques, poison knowledge, and hidden weapons according to the situation. 75 76
He sees himself as principled and disciplined, but his fixation on Tang Sect techniques can override that self-image. After witnessing Jiang Lan use advanced arts associated with the Tang Sect, he becomes consumed by doubts about whether his former knowledge was incomplete; this eventually drives him to break into Jiang Lan’s residence and steal the Sunflower Manual. 80 82 89
His shame makes him secretive when cornered. Rather than explain that Jiang Lan’s traps drugged him during the theft, he allows his companions to believe a damaging false explanation, isolating himself from Xiao Wu and the rest of Shrek. 91 92
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San’s Martial Soul is Blue Silver Grass, which he uses for restraint and battlefield control.
- First Soul Skill: Entangling — summons thorn-covered Blue Silver Grass to bind targets; its thorns can numb an opponent while the vines tighten. 75
- Dugu Yan’s enhanced poison can corrode and destroy the summoned grass, forcing Tang San to abandon his usual control tactics. 75 76
Hidden Weapons
Tang San is an expert in Tang Sect-style concealed weapons and employs them with exceptional precision.
- Uses steel needles, Willow Leaf Blades, Flying Locust Stones, Coin Darts, Bone-Piercing Nails, and sleeve arrows. 76
- Alters trajectories and angles mid-flight, including ricocheting weapons off one another to create difficult-to-predict attacks. 76
- His ranged barrage can suppress Dugu Yan despite her dangerous poison, but prolonged combat exhausts his supply of hidden weapons. 76
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A high-speed movement technique used for evasion and repositioning.
- Allows Tang San to weave through falling rocks and evade attacks at extreme speed. 59
- Creates afterimages during combat, complicating an enemy’s ability to locate his true body. 75
- Requires continuous momentum; he is vulnerable during the interval between exhausting old force and generating new force. 59
- Jiang Lan’s Thousand Illusory Shadow Step proves even more elusive, remaining difficult for Tang San to track even with the Purple Demon Eyes. 80
Purple Demon Eyes
Tang San enhances his vision with the Purple Demon Eyes to follow high-speed opponents and analyze techniques.
- Helps him track Jiang Lan’s movements and identify the martial principles behind Ye Lingling’s palm techniques. 76 80
- Even at full output, it cannot fully follow Jiang Lan’s Thousand Illusory Shadow Step. 80
Tang Sect Martial Knowledge
Tang San retains knowledge of martial arts from his former life, including acupoint strikes, close-range grappling, internal-force techniques, and the Mysterious Heaven Skill. 76 80 82
- He recognizes Jiang Lan’s use of Tang Sect Acupoint Hand, Swallow’s Return Loop, Cotton Palm, and the Thousand Illusory Shadow Step. 80
- Ye Lingling’s Falling Flower Divine Sword Palm convinces him that another person from his original world may be present in Douluo Continent. 76 77
- His belief that Tang Sect arts rightfully belong to him becomes the basis for his self-justification when stealing the Sunflower Manual. 89
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — Fellow Shrek member whom Tang San regards as his little sister; he searches the Star Dou Great Forest for her without hesitation. Their bond fractures after she misinterprets the aftermath of Tang San’s drugged encounter with Ma Hongjun. 59 91 92
- Yu Xiaogang — Tang San’s master. Tang San is unsettled when Yu Xiaogang dismisses Jiang Lan’s martial arts and later rejects the offered Nine Yang Manual. 81 82
- Jiang Lan — A mysterious young rival whose advanced martial arts deeply unsettle Tang San. Jiang Lan defeats him in a spar, offers to teach him, and later catches him in a series of traps during Tang San’s attempted theft. 80 89 90
- Dugu Yan — Heaven Dou Royal Academy opponent. Her evolved poison overwhelms Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and impedes his Soul Power circulation. 75 76
- Ye Lingling — Heaven Dou opponent whose martial arts provoke Tang San’s suspicion that she has been trained by another transmigrator. She defeats him during the academy spar. 76 77
- Ma Hongjun — Shrek teammate. Tang San’s drugged and disoriented actions after Jiang Lan’s trap leave Ma Hongjun injured and unconscious, causing Tang San intense guilt. 91
- Dai Mubai, Oscar, Zhu Zhuqing, Ning Rongrong — Fellow Shrek Seven Monsters who become alarmed and distant after Tang San’s false confession. 91 92
Story Role / Major Arcs
Star Dou Great Forest
While searching for Xiao Wu, Tang San is caught in the aftermath of Jiang Lan’s clash with Er Ming. He uses Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track to evade a rain of shattered rock but is ultimately struck from behind and knocked unconscious. 59
Heaven Dou Royal Academy Spar
Tang San participates in Shrek Academy’s seven-on-seven match against Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Dugu Yan destroys his Entangling Blue Silver Grass with poison, while Ye Lingling’s unfamiliar palm arts divert his attention and help secure Shrek’s total defeat. 75 76
After the loss, he becomes fixated on Ye Lingling’s techniques, which resemble the Falling Blossoms Sword Technique from his former world. He privately theorizes that her master may be another transmigrator with martial attainments beyond his own. 77
Duel with Jiang Lan
Tang San accepts Jiang Lan’s challenge despite initially refusing to bully a child. Jiang Lan’s Martial Arts Guga form reveals superior versions of familiar Tang Sect arts, including Lightness Skill, acupoint strikes, Swallow’s Return Loop, Cotton Palm, and the Thousand Illusory Shadow Step. 79 80
Shaken by the implication that he learned only incomplete Tang Sect teachings in his previous life, Tang San concedes when Jiang Lan offers to teach him. 80
Theft of the *Sunflower Manual*
Unable to let go of Jiang Lan’s martial knowledge, Tang San secretly enters Jiang Lan’s room to take the Sunflower Manual. He rationalizes the act as reclaiming Tang Sect inheritance rather than theft. 89
Jiang Lan’s traps cover him in foul powder and strike him with a drug-coated needle. Tang San escapes with the manual while disoriented by the substance’s effects. 89 90
Fallout at Blue Tyrant Academy
Tang San returns to his residence in an impaired state and harms Ma Hongjun. Unable to admit that he stole a manual from Jiang Lan and was incapacitated by a trap, he claims to have “unusual preferences.” 91
The statement horrifies his companions, drives Xiao Wu away, and leaves Tang San emotionally isolated. 91 92
Later Battles
Tang San recognizes that Jiang Lan’s apparently chaotic Little Guga Turtle Punch is not luck, but a display of exceptional instinct and precise timing against Feng Xiaotian. 105
During Shrek’s later battle against Jiang Lan, Tang San attempts a rear attack with Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track. Jiang Lan casually blocks it, numbing Tang San’s arm, before rapidly defeating the rest of the Shrek team. 107
