Power Progression

Background / History

Huo Hai based the Star Gu on an online description of a legendary Gu refined from the tiny Three Paths insect. Unable to find the original material in the Spirit Realm Continent, he recreated the method with local insects selected for hard bodies, strong jaws, enormous appetites, adaptability, and regeneration. He considered the swarm a practical substitute for the powerful insects he could not yet subdue. 17

The initial refinement produced far more than Huo Hai expected. The hatchlings emerged from cocoon-like shells, immediately devoured their unhatched kin, and demonstrated an instinctive survival-of-the-strongest hierarchy. Huo Hai chose the strongest individual, bound it with a ritual, and named it Little Star; it became the swarm king through which he could direct the other Star Gu. 19 20

Huo Hai initially carried the more than five hundred insects in a small grass cage at his waist rather than storing them inside his body. The cage appeared decorative, concealing one of his greatest weapons from ordinary observers. 21

The swarm later expanded to five thousand members. Their growth was repeatedly accelerated by the consumption of Heavenly Grade Source Spirit Stones, Demonic Energy, Spirit Stones, and specialized refinement formations. Although Demonic Energy initially allowed the Star Gu to break through to the Spirit Practitioner Realm, it also threatened to reduce their intelligence, turn them into uncontrollable demonized insects, and cause master-backlash against Huo Hai. 200 210 229

Huo Hai gradually purified the Demonic Energy through the Spirit-Raising Witch Formation and later the Auxiliary Insect Refining Formation. The latter process unexpectedly converted the remaining corruption into Light-Attribute power, producing the swarm’s white Spirit General Realm form and forging a clearer connection between Huo Hai, Little Star, and every member of the swarm. 240 411 413

The Star Gu’s apparent Light Attribute was ultimately not their original nature. Huo Hai later discovered that the ordinary beetles used in their first refinement had been continuously influenced by the lingering power of a dead Space King Worm. Their unusual appetites, internal storage spaces, and eventual spatial evolution were consequences of that long-term exposure. 1288 1326

After consuming the Space King Worm’s remaining power, the Star Gu formed their own spatial Origin Essence and became Spatial Attribute Spirit Insects. Their later dark-gold Spirit Venerable Realm transformation fully purged their remaining Light Attribute and allowed them to travel through space. 1326 1355

Appearance

The Star Gu are tiny, beetle-like Gu insects that can resemble glimmering motes when gathered in flight. Individually inconspicuous, they become visibly dangerous when their faint crystalline light condenses into a swarm formation. 21 22

• Their first-generation cocoons are harder than steel and can barely be marked by high-grade daggers. 19 21
• When dispersed, their glow blends easily into sunlight or moonlight, making them easy to overlook. 22

Swarm Command and Master Bond

Huo Hai’s refined blood allows the Star Gu to recognize him as their master. His bond with Little Star is especially strong: he can sense the king’s intentions and use it to issue commands to the swarm. 17 19 21

Defensive Formations

When gathered, the Star Gu form a dense, light-like shield around Huo Hai and nearby allies. Their bodies and jaws can stop or consume incoming weapons. 22 26 41

• They consumed Spirit-Breaking Arrows that were meant to pierce spiritual defenses. 22
• They blocked flying knives and concealed weapons by linking into a protective formation. 26 41
• Their defenses are strongest against physical attacks; spiritual-energy and elemental attacks consume their stored energy instead of merely testing their shells. 24

Southern Mountain Trial

The Star Gu give Huo Hai a decisive advantage in Imperial City Academy’s Southern Mountain trial. They gather point cards, expose ambushes, shield him from arrows, eliminate hostile participants, and hunt spirit beasts for the cards they guard. 22 24 30 36

Their effectiveness allows Huo Hai to defeat foes beyond his own apparent cultivation, including a Spirit Bone Realm Fang Howler and the Ironclad Hound pack. However, battles against lightning, spiritual attacks, and the Spirit Practitioner Realm Hound King demonstrate that the swarm’s power must be managed strategically. 24 29 37 38

The “Concealed Weapon Technique”

Survivors of the trial mistake the Star Gu for innumerable star-like concealed weapons. Huo Hai preserves the deception when questioned about his exceptional point total, allowing the Huo Family to gain a reputation for a powerful hidden martial technique while concealing the insects’ true nature. 41 43

The supposed technique attracts alliances, gifts, marriage proposals, internal jealousy, and conspiracies from rival Lineages that seek to seize it. 43 45

The deception persists through Huo Hai’s later academy battles. In his match with Fang Biya, he disguises more than a dozen Star Gu as a hidden-weapon technique and uses them to disperse the force of her Cloudflow Finger. 125

Metamorphosis and Huo Yuner’s Rescue

The first-generation swarm enters metamorphosis shortly before Huo Yuner is abducted, leaving Huo Hai temporarily dependent on Little Gold. More than five hundred Star Gu complete their transformation at the critical moment, restoring his greatest weapon and giving him the strength to act. 43 48

The transformed Star Gu infiltrate the kidnappers’ warehouse, disarm the hidden death warrior, protect Huo Yuner, cripple the mercenaries, and ultimately consume the entire group and all physical evidence of the attack. 49 50

Source Spirit Land Expeditions

The Star Gu are indispensable to Huo Hai’s exploration of the Source Spirit Land. They search the wasteland for Source Spirit Stones, locate and destroy stone guardians by attacking their weak points, and later excavate mineral veins that ordinary entrants cannot exploit. 150 153

During his later return as a Spirit Venerable, the spatially evolved swarm mines enormous quantities of Heavenly Grade Source Spirit Stones and uses the Continuity Renewal Method to restore its depleted Origin Essence. 1355 1356

Demonicization, Purification, and Light Evolution

By devouring Demon Spirit Masters and Demonfolk, the Star Gu accumulate enough Demonic Energy to break through their former limit. The resulting Spirit Practitioner Realm transformation greatly increases their combat power but endangers their intelligence, obedience, and Huo Hai’s safety. 200 229

Huo Hai spends immense resources cleansing the swarm and eventually uses the Auxiliary Insect Refining Formation to eliminate its demonic corruption. The Star Gu unexpectedly emerge as white Light-Attribute Spirit General Realm insects with improved intelligence, concealment, and collective command. 240 411 413

Windrise Kingdom and the Demon Spirit Masters

The Light-Attribute Star Gu become one of Huo Hai’s most effective counters against Demon Spirit Masters. Their light power pierces Demonicized Spiritual Power, enabling them to capture or kill opponents who would normally require far greater effort to defeat. 416 417

In Windrise Kingdom’s Royal Palace, Huo Hai uses their scouting, camouflage, and coordinated assassination ability to eliminate thirteen Demonized Spirit Generals and the palace’s leadership before the defenders can raise an alarm. 425 426

Wars, Assassinations, and Spirit King Evolution

The Spirit Marshal Realm Star Gu become central to Huo Hai’s warfare against Demonfolk, mercenaries, and hostile kingdoms. They can form large light shields, disrupt armies, sabotage siege weapons, infiltrate armor, and decapitate enemy command structures even within Spirit-Banning Formations. 525 527 584 585

After their Spirit King Realm metamorphosis, the swarm becomes more self-sufficient and intelligent. Huo Hai uses more than one hundred Star Gu to assassinate a Fourth-Level Spirit King of the Vast Earth Empire and fabricate evidence intended to provoke conflict with sea beasts. 706 712

Spatial Origin and Higher-Realm Advancement

Huo Hai’s discovery of the Space King Worm reveals the origin of the Star Gu’s unusual nature. After the swarm consumes the corpse’s remaining spatial power, it develops spatial Origin Essence and abandons its temporary Light Attribute. 1326

The Star Gu later emerge as dark-gold Spirit Venerable Realm Spatial Attribute insects capable of spatial travel and collective combat powerful enough to threaten ordinary Spirit Venerables. At the Spirit Saint Realm, their individual strength remains below perfected experts, but their number, speed, durability, and spatial attacks keep them among Huo Hai’s most dangerous assets. 1355 1565 1577

Celestial Star Sect Ruins

When Huo Hai is transported alone into the Celestial Star Sect’s hidden headquarters, the Star Gu remain outside rather than blindly following into an unknown formation. They grow anxious over his disappearance until Little Butterfly calms them and helps them understand that he was likely teleported rather than killed. 865

The swarm later searches the abandoned complex on Huo Hai’s behalf, recovering the few surviving materials and helping him investigate the hidden inheritance mechanisms beneath the Sect Master’s seat. 865 866
