Background / History

Huo Hai based the Star Gu on an online description of a legendary Gu refined from the tiny Three Paths insect. Unable to find the original material in the Spirit Realm Continent, he recreated the method with local insects selected for hard bodies, strong jaws, enormous appetites, adaptability, and regeneration. He considered the swarm a practical substitute for the powerful insects he could not yet subdue. 17

The initial refinement produced far more than Huo Hai expected. The hatchlings emerged from cocoon-like shells, immediately devoured their unhatched kin, and demonstrated an instinctive survival-of-the-strongest hierarchy. Huo Hai chose the strongest individual, bound it with a ritual, and named it Little Star; it became the swarm king through which he could direct the other Star Gu. 19 20

Huo Hai initially carried the more than five hundred insects in a small grass cage at his waist rather than storing them inside his body. The cage appeared decorative, concealing one of his greatest weapons from ordinary observers. 21

Appearance

The Star Gu are tiny, beetle-like Gu insects that can resemble glimmering motes when gathered in flight. Individually inconspicuous, they become visibly dangerous when their faint crystalline light condenses into a swarm formation. 21 22

Southern Mountain Trial

The Star Gu give Huo Hai a decisive advantage in Imperial City Academy’s Southern Mountain trial. They gather point cards, expose ambushes, shield him from arrows, eliminate hostile participants, and hunt spirit beasts for the cards they guard. 22 24 30 36

Their effectiveness allows Huo Hai to defeat foes beyond his own apparent cultivation, including a Spirit Bone Realm Fang Howler and the Ironclad Hound pack. However, battles against lightning, spiritual attacks, and the Spirit Practitioner Realm Hound King demonstrate that the swarm’s power must be managed strategically. 24 29 37 38

The “Concealed Weapon Technique”

Survivors of the trial mistake the Star Gu for innumerable star-like concealed weapons. Huo Hai preserves the deception when questioned about his exceptional point total, allowing the Huo Family to gain a reputation for a powerful hidden martial technique while concealing the insects’ true nature. 41 43

The supposed technique attracts alliances, gifts, marriage proposals, internal jealousy, and conspiracies from rival Lineages that seek to seize it. 43 45

Metamorphosis and Huo Yuner’s Rescue

The first-generation swarm enters metamorphosis shortly before Huo Yuner is abducted, leaving Huo Hai temporarily dependent on Little Gold. More than five hundred Star Gu complete their transformation at the critical moment, restoring his greatest weapon and giving him the strength to act. 43 48

The transformed Star Gu infiltrate the kidnappers’ warehouse, disarm the hidden death warrior, protect Huo Yuner, cripple the mercenaries, and ultimately consume the entire group and all physical evidence of the attack. 49 50
