Ch. 381Colleagues
Plot points and events
- Werther waits at the villa on the King’s Plateau for Kaido’s men, while Sugar teases him about being alone with Monet. He jokes about Sugar’s childlike appearance despite her being twenty.
- Jack arrives as Kaido’s representative. Werther is disappointed not to meet one of Kaido’s other All-Stars, but chooses Jack to accompany him in pursuit of Aokiji. Jack leaves his men on Dressrosa.
- Werther summons Doflamingo. The three men set out on the King of the Sky, Werther’s enormous, tamed bird, with Jack jokingly criticized for being too heavy.
- Aokiji waits on a deserted island that was abandoned after a chemical leak ruined its vegetation. He has remained there because his enemies hold his Vivre Card, making escape pointless.
- While waiting, Aokiji calls his former colleague Sakazuki (Akainu). He warns that the Marines’ move to the New World was rash and jokes about challenging Akainu for the Fleet Admiral position.
- Akainu realizes Aokiji’s call may be a farewell. Aokiji confirms he is facing Doflamingo, Jack, Kaido, and Werther, then ends the call as the King of the Sky approaches. Akainu concludes Aokiji is likely doomed.
Character developments and interactions
- Werther is confident and commanding, organizing the pursuit and treating Jack as a practical ally despite their history. His teasing with Sugar shows a more playful side.
- Jack still has a strong fighting spirit, but acknowledges Werther’s superior strength and follows his lead. He is impressed by the King of the Sky.
- Doflamingo arrives with his Devil Fruit abilities on full display; Werther admires how versatilely Doflamingo has developed them.
- Aokiji accepts that he may die, choosing to face his pursuers rather than flee. His call to Akainu reveals a lingering, complicated bond with his former colleague despite their opposing beliefs.
- Akainu remains forceful in his view that the Marines should dominate the seas, but recognizes the gravity of Aokiji’s situation.
