Ch. 41Caught between ice and fire
Plot points and events
- Su Ming watches Flender and Zhao Wuji kiss passionately, then startles when Ah Yin appears beside him.
- He takes Flender to Blue Tyrant Academy to reunite with Liu Erlong. After Yu Xiaogang’s death, Liu Erlong’s feelings for him fade, and she and Flender agree to establish a Shrek class within the academy.
- Su Ming visits Heaven Dou Palace and warns Qian Renxue about the tangled history involving Bibi Dong, Qian Xunji, and Yu Xiaogang. He leaves her to decide what to do, unwilling or unable to interfere in the larger conflict.
- Several years later, Snow Empress tracks Su Ming down, accusing him of pursuing her and then abandoning her. Ice Empress is with her. Their arrival exposes Su Ming to the judgment of Ah Yin, Tang San, and Xiao Wu, who all take Snow Empress’s side.
- Snow Empress and Ice Empress move into Su Ming’s home. His life becomes a comic ordeal of managing their complaints and Snow Empress’s feelings while also placating Ah Yin.
- In the twelfth year, Tang San and Xiao Wu graduate from Nuoding Academy and enter Blue Tyrant Academy’s Shrek class on Su Ming’s recommendation.
Character developments and interactions
- Su Ming remains focused on his own survival and goal of ascending to the Divine Realm. He shows limited compassion—warning Qian Renxue and arranging Flender’s reunion—but refuses to take responsibility for changing the larger course of events. His attempt to defend himself to Snow Empress fails.
- Flender and Liu Erlong reconnect and make a practical decision to run a Shrek class together. With Yu Xiaogang gone, their relationship is portrayed as more clear-headed.
- Qian Renxue receives information that could lead her to break with Bibi Dong, though the chapter does not show her response.
- Snow Empress and Ice Empress become part of Su Ming’s household. Snow Empress confronts him over what she interprets as romantic abandonment; Ice Empress’s envy and indignation add to the tension.
- Ah Yin, Tang San, and Xiao Wu join in teasing and criticizing Su Ming. Ah Yin’s private frustration is tied to Su Ming’s inability to consummate their relationship.
Significant themes
- Responsibility and intervention: Su Ming helps selectively but accepts that he cannot—or will not—stop the broader conflicts.
- Miscommunication and romantic expectations: Snow Empress sees Su Ming’s past behavior as courtship, while he insists he was only seeking friendship.
- Consequences and changing relationships: Yu Xiaogang’s death alters Liu Erlong’s feelings and allows Flender and Liu Erlong to act more sensibly.
- Comic domestic chaos: The serious political and supernatural stakes are contrasted with Su Ming’s increasingly crowded, emotionally demanding household.
