Li Shan initially doubts Ling Han’s application to teach at Nouding Academy: the applicant claims to be an eighteen-year-old Level 76 Soul Saint. After Ling Han displays his seven Soul Rings, Li Shan apologizes and offers him the position of honored patron. The post carries the academy’s highest status and no regular duties; in return, Ling Han promises to help if the academy faces serious trouble. When city lord Xiao Gang demands that the academy answer for Tang San’s beating of his son, Li Shan refuses to intervene on Tang San’s behalf or against him: Tang San is Ling Han’s disciple. He is visibly relieved when Ling Han arrives to handle the confrontation 11. Later, Li Shan witnesses Ling Han emerge from his breakthrough to Titled Douluo and congratulates him. Ling Han’s rise from Soul Saint to Titled Douluo in three years astonishes him 27.
