Background / History

Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect

Yu Xiaogang was born the second son of sect master Yu Yuanzhen. While his peers awakened dragon-type Martial Souls, he awakened Luo Sanpao and became a target of ridicule. His elder brother inherited the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul and later became a senior sect member 65 84.

He initially spent his days reading frivolous books in the sect’s archive before discovering its Martial Soul theory collections. He subsequently passed the sect’s knowledge off as his own work. Yu Yuanzhen expelled him for this, although he continued to care about his son and later took pride in his connection to Tang San 84.

Bibi Dong and Spirit Hall

According to Bibi Dong, they met when she was training in the Star Dou Great Forest as Spirit Hall’s Holy Maiden. Although she was already a Soul Ancestor, Yu Xiaogang intervened when several ten-year soul beasts attacked her. He then discussed the Continental Soul Master Martial Soul Index she was carrying. Yu Dagang and Fu Lander later interpreted the encounter as a staged rescue intended to gain access to her knowledge; this interpretation is presented as their deduction 64.

Bibi Dong remembered promises of marriage and lifelong devotion. During their time in Spirit City, however, Yu Xiaogang spent much of his time in Spirit Hall’s archive and emerged with his theory of the ten core competencies of Martial Soul 66.

His later confession under Feng Xuanyuan’s Power of Truth exposed a deliberate betrayal: he accepted Spirit Hall texts from Qian Xunji, lured Bibi Dong into the secret chamber where Qian Xunji sexually assaulted her, and remained outside listening. He admitted that he considered the texts more useful than a relationship Spirit Hall would oppose, and that he copied and altered their contents before attaching his own name 83.

Teaching Tang San

Yu Xiaogang accepted Tang San as his disciple at Nuoding Academy and accompanied him on his first soul-ring hunt. Tang San’s declaration that “a teacher for a day is a father for life” became central to his expectations of their relationship 78.

He initially viewed Tang San as an opportunity to test his theories and restore his reputation. Nevertheless, he also provided personal care: buying bedding and New Year clothes, preparing meals, and tending Tang San when he was ill. The narrative additionally recalls his willingness to confront Dugu Bo and Spirit Hall for his disciple’s sake 65 85.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely concerned with recognition. He expects Tang San’s future godhood to immortalize his own name and vindicate him before the sect that rejected him. When the Sky Screen first repeats his famous maxim, he immediately assumes it has endorsed his authority 56 63.

His insecurity often becomes anger or denial. He improvises an empty explanation of Body Martial Souls rather than admit ignorance, rejects Ji Juechen’s success with an ordinary Martial Soul, and blames heaven for his own limitations 58 64 65.

His final decision contrasts with his earlier fear of death. After pleading for survival and learning that Tang San despises him, he nevertheless gives his disciple the opportunity to live. He acknowledges both his wrongdoing and his inability to survive the challenge, then accepts death 78 82 85.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao is consistently depicted as a severely limited Martial Soul whose principal demonstrated function is releasing flatulence 63 65.

  • Yu Xiaogang uses its emissions to conceal himself during the Deep Adventure arena battle 82.
  • The First-Generation Angel God’s Angel Domain immediately purifies the gas, exposing him 82.
  • It provides no effective defense against the historical powerhouses confronting him, even at equal cultivation 82 84.

Martial Soul Theory

Yu Xiaogang’s reputation rests on theoretical knowledge rather than demonstrated research. The Sky Screen explicitly identifies his work as plagiarism, and his own compelled confession confirms that he copied Spirit Hall texts 63 83.

  • Known material: He can explain the Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul’s rank-twenty innate Soul Power using records he read in Spirit Hall 69.
  • Knowledge gaps: He cannot meaningfully explain Body Martial Souls when questioned 58.
  • Misidentification: He calls Tang San’s first Martial Soul ordinary Blue Silver Grass without recognizing its Blue Silver Emperor inheritance 80.
  • Teaching methods: Ning Rongrong identifies weighted running and poorly prepared food as his main contributions, contrasting them with the substantive instruction given by other teachers 65.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Legacy and the Sky Screen’s Exposure

In the later era, Bei Bei identifies his lineage as descending from Yu Xiaogang rather than directly from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect. He credits that ancestry with enabling Mu En to awaken the Radiant Sacred Dragon Martial Soul, surprising Qian Daoliu, who remembers Yu Xiaogang as an incompetent plagiarist 31.

The Black World—the parallel timeline set ten thousand years earlier—introduces Yu Xiaogang watching the Sky Screen alongside Shrek’s teachers and students. He anticipates fame through Tang San, only for the broadcast to call him a counterexample to his own maxim and credit Tang San, rather than his teaching, for the Seven Devils’ eventual godhood 56 63.

Abduction and the Original Timeline’s Death

Feng Xuanyuan reaches through the Sky Screen and seizes the Black World Yu Xiaogang. Flender, Liu Erlong, and Zhao Wuji cannot stop the enormous hand carrying him into Qiankun Asking Love Valley, where he encounters the god-level Tang San from another world 77.

The Sky Screen then shows the original timeline’s elderly Yu Xiaogang dying beside Liu Erlong. He spends his final moments insisting that Tang San will save him and bring him to the Divine Realm, but dies without that promise being fulfilled 78.

Truth Challenge and Deep Adventure

Yu Xiaogang chooses the Truth Challenge because he fears the potentially fatal alternative. He asks whether Tang San sincerely accepted him as a teacher. Compelled to answer honestly, Tang San calls the apprenticeship his greatest mistake, dismisses Yu Xiaogang’s competence, and admits that allowing him into the Divine Realm would damage his own image 79 80.

After failing the Truth Challenge, Yu Xiaogang enters an intensified Deep Adventure. Instead of surviving separate five-minute bouts against equal-ranked versions of the Shrek Seven Devils, he faces historical geniuses, with another opponent joining every five minutes 81 82.

  • Evil Eye Holy King: The first challenger 81 82.
  • First-Generation Angel God: Removes his concealment and repeatedly wounds him to keep him moving 82.
  • First Generation Sea God, Poseidon: Enters after Yu Xiaogang is already severely injured 82.
  • Qian Xunji phantom: Confronts him about their past agreement, prompting his confession under the Power of Truth 82 83.

Final Sacrifice

Offered a reduced difficulty and a substitute-death opportunity, Yu Xiaogang leaves those benefits to Tang San. He explains that he cannot survive even an easier challenge and would rather exchange his life for his disciple’s chance to live 85.

The Evil Eye Holy King, First-Generation Angel God, and Poseidon strike him almost simultaneously with claws, sword, and trident. His death moves Shrek’s observers to pity and deepens their anger toward Tang San 85.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple and intended source of vindication. Their relationship combines exploitation, genuine caregiving, resentment, and Yu Xiaogang’s eventual sacrifice for him 56 65 80 85.
  • Bibi Dong — Former lover whom he betrayed for Spirit Hall texts. She continues seeking his rescue until his confession reveals his involvement in her assault 79 82 83.
  • Liu Erlong — Devoted companion. She attempts to rescue his Black World counterpart and remains beside the original Yu Xiaogang at his deathbed 77 78.
  • Flender — Friend who treats him as a brother. His confession provokes Flender’s condemnation, although Flender still mourns his death 83 85.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and former sect master. Expels him for appropriating sect knowledge but remains worried for his safety 84.
  • Qian Xunji — His partner in the exchange of Bibi Dong’s betrayal for Spirit Hall texts 83.
  • Feng Xuanyuan — Abductor and challenge administrator who exposes his past and oversees his death 77 83 85.
  • Yu Dagang — A separate man who closely resembles his younger self. He explicitly denies being Yu Xiaogang; his title of Golden Dragon Douluo and awakened Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline do not belong to Yu Xiaogang 64 66.
