Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s head, whom he identifies as a level-95 Power Attack System Titled Douluo. His Martial Soul mutated into Luo Sanpao, leaving him unable to advance beyond level 29. The clan’s contempt for him became a central motive behind his desire to establish himself as an unrivaled theorist 4 22.

He presented the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul as the product of decades of research. However, his supposed discoveries were drawn from Spirit Hall records accessed through personal connections with its upper ranks. Su Chen publicly exposed this appropriation, and the Destiny Plunder System confirmed the academic theft 4 10.

Before recruiting Tang San, Yu Xiaogang already had connections with both Nuoding Academy and Shrek Academy. Flender, Shrek’s dean in Suotuo City, was his friend and sworn brother; Yu Xiaogang also claimed an old acquaintance with Spirit Hall’s pope, Bibi Dong 4 22 25.

He avoided Liu Erlong for twenty years, having vowed to nurture the finest disciple and prove his theories unrivaled before openly appearing before the world again. After the destruction of his reputation and the deterioration of Shrek’s circumstances, he reluctantly agreed to seek assistance at her Blue Tyrant Academy in Heaven Dou City 58.

Following Xue Xing’s seizure of the throne, Yu Xiaogang joined the new regime. Through the military authority of his second uncle, Yu Luomian, he obtained a legion commander’s post and sought to replace his ruined scholarly reputation with renown as a military strategist 96.

Appearance

  • Initial appearance: A middle-aged man in a black robe, with a stiff, expressionless face and a low, hoarse voice. He frequently stands with his hands clasped behind his back 3 4.
  • Clothing: Later wears gray robes and an old cloth robe washed almost white 9 12.
  • Physique: Gaunt, with dark-purple welts across his torso after suffering Martial Soul backlash 22.
  • Lasting disability: Uses a specially made wheelchair after Tang Hao crushes both knees 22 25.
  • Later condition: Increasingly withered and pale, often coughing or bleeding following repeated injuries 25 38.
  • Complete lower-body paralysis: After the Star Dou Great Forest clash, both legs’ bones are described as completely pulverized and his meridians severed inch by inch. He loses all sensation in his lower body and is transported lying on straw-padded boards 58.
  • North Wind Canyon injuries: Suffers a raw, bloody facial scrape when his armored command carriage overturns and throws him onto oil-covered gravel 97.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang cultivates the image of a detached, authoritative scholar, but his ambitions are rooted in resentment over his weak Martial Soul and stagnant cultivation. He wants a successful disciple to prove his worth to the continent and to the clan that despises him. Before meeting the prospective students, he plans to rescue them from the academy gatekeeper so their gratitude will make them easier to recruit as subjects for his theories 3 4.

His pride makes criticism intensely personal. Su Chen’s exposure of Luo Sanpao and the level-29 bottleneck provokes rage, while later challenges to his theories deepen his fixation on revenge. Even after witnessing results that contradict his teachings, he insists that Su Chen’s cultivation must eventually destroy him 4 18 30.

Self-preservation overrides his responsibilities as a teacher. He abandons Tang San during a lethal Soul Beast attack, then recasts his flight as a self-sacrificing attempt to obtain help. He also portrays Tang San’s inferior First Soul Ring as a theoretical success rather than acknowledge the damage to his disciple’s development 14 18 20.

His dependence on others eventually forces him to compromise his pride. When Flender confronts him over the suffering of their companions and the need for Liu Erlong’s resources, Yu Xiaogang agrees to approach Blue Tyrant Academy, but asks that no one recognize him at first 58.

As a legion commander, he retains his habitual lecturing manner while justifying forced submission to Xue Xing as obedience to the prevailing political tide. He holds exhausted academy students as bait for a lethal ambush, privately anticipating that burning fleeing Soul Masters to death will establish him as a military genius 96.

His composure again collapses when directly threatened. After Su Chen overturns his command vehicle, he cries out for Liu Erlong and Flender to save him and becomes too terrified to cooperate in manifesting the complete Golden Sacred Dragon 97.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao manifests as a separate, four-legged creature resembling a fat pig or pig-dog 13 25.

  • Distinguishing features: Oversized ears, a stubby tail, and a round body that expands before attacking 13 14.
  • Tracking: Sniffs the undergrowth while Yu Xiaogang searches for Soul Beasts 13.
  • Soul Skill — Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao: Releases a thunderous blast of foul yellow gas carrying a shock wave; its later use is described as poisonous 14 25.
  • Backlash: Forcible destruction of Luo Sanpao causes Yu Xiaogang severe internal injuries and blood loss 14 25.
  • Combat limitations: The three-thousand-year Dark-Armored Bloodhorn Dragon destroys Luo Sanpao, while Su Chen later incinerates its gas attack and shatters it with rebounding force 14 25.
  • Not permanently destroyed: Despite being dispersed in the Soul Hunting Forest, Luo Sanpao is summoned again six years later 14 25.
  • Earlier defeat: The four-hundred-year Mandala Snake also breaks through its gas shock wave and disperses Luo Sanpao with a tail strike 13.

Martial Soul Theory

Yu Xiaogang’s teachings address awakening, Soul Ring combinations, Martial Soul Mimicry, and absorption limits. His most convincing demonstrated deduction is identifying Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls from an awakening certificate showing Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power 4 9.

Theory or Claim Application or Outcome
Martial Soul quality determines Innate Soul Power. Reasons that Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass cannot explain innate level-10 Soul Power, correctly deducing a powerful second Martial Soul 4.
“There are only useless Soul Masters.” Su Chen challenges the claim using inherited Martial Soul ceilings and Yu Xiaogang’s own inability to reach level 30 9.
The First Soul Ring has an absolute age limit of 423 years. Tang San repeats this teaching, but Su Chen successfully absorbs a three-thousand-year First Soul Ring 16.
Martial Soul Mimicry can grant Blue Silver Grass a beast’s useful properties. Selects a Mandala Snake to provide poison and binding strength; this plan fails when Su Chen takes the intended opportunity 12 17 18.
Plants of the same lineage can nourish one another. Uses the claim to justify a ten-year Deadwood Vine ring. Tang San reaches level 11 and stabilizes his injuries, but his Blue Silver Grass becomes yellowed and brittle 18 22.

Soul Beast Knowledge

  • Habitat knowledge: Knows that Mandala Snakes favor cold, damp areas and conceal themselves beneath rotting leaves 13.
  • Identification failure: Mistakes a three-thousand-year Dark-Armored Bloodhorn Dragon for a roughly five-hundred-year mutated Thick-Armored Crocodile, leading to a disastrous attack 14.
  • Soul Bone recognition: Immediately recognizes the external Soul Bone dropped by a two-thousand-year Man Faced Demon Spider and understands its potential to grow alongside its owner 43.
  • Ancient records: Claims knowledge of a mutated beast capable of reshaping meridians and devouring life force near the boundary of the Star Dou Great Forest’s outskirts and core 38.

Team Instruction

  • Trains a Shrek Team tactical formation and expects Tang San’s battlefield control and hidden weapons to complement Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun’s assaults 34.
  • Issues a full-team deathmatch challenge against the Dragon God Team to restore his reputation 34.
  • His formation fails to secure victory; seeing Tang San lose the use of both arms during the match causes him to vomit blood and faint 36.

Martial Soul Fusion

  • Golden Sacred Dragon: Can cooperate with Liu Erlong and Flender to manifest the complete Golden Sacred Dragon. At North Wind Canyon, his terror prevents the necessary cooperation, so the complete fusion does not form 97.
  • Fallback by his companions: Liu Erlong and Flender instead burn their Soul Saint origins to perform Two-Horned Soul Fusion, Crimson Dragon Rends the Heavens, producing a crimson fire dragon with incomplete wings to intercept Su Chen 97.

Military Command

  • Command authority: Obtains a legion commander’s position through Yu Luomian’s control of the Imperial City’s military forces 96.
  • North Wind Canyon deployment: Commands three thousand cavalry and conceals eight hundred elite archers and crossbowmen on the cliffs, supported by rolling logs, stones, and more than three hundred barrels of fierce fire oil 96.
  • Bait-and-rescue ambush: Keeps Shui Bing’er and the other six Skywater Academy girls alive to attract fleeing academy Soul Masters or Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect personnel. His planned killing zone exploits the canyon’s gourd-shaped terrain 96.
  • Operational failure: Su Chen detects the concealed forces before entering the trap and turns the prepared fire oil against Yu Xiaogang’s own troops, transforming the formation into a fire pit 96 97.

She later guards him at North Wind Canyon and joins Flender in a desperate fusion attack to protect him 96 97.
  • Yu Tianheng — Addresses Yu Xiaogang as uncle and serves alongside him at North Wind Canyon, offering to lead troops against Skywater Academy’s defensive ice shield 96.
  • Xue Xing — Usurping emperor whom Yu Xiaogang serves as a legion commander. Yu Xiaogang promotes his academy-reorganization policy and uses an imperial-sealed blood contract to demand the Skywater students’ allegiance 96.
  • Shui Bing’er and the Skywater Academy team — Targets of his forced-recruitment operation and bait for his canyon ambush. Shui Bing’er and Shui Yue’er reject his demand for submission and denounce the usurping regime and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s complicity 96.
