Background / History

Leadership under village pressure

Fugaku leads the Uchiha while Konoha steadily restricts the clan’s influence. Their compound has been relocated, the Police Force has lost much of its authority, and Danzo’s interference discourages independent investigations. During the shinobi disappearance crisis, Fugaku orders increased patrols within their remaining jurisdiction but admits that the clan can do little more 11.

Despite his stern manner, he recognizes the importance of encouraging children. After hearing Itachi describe Gua’s progress, Fugaku praises the boy to his father, Oyama. He privately doubts that Gua is a genuine prodigy, but considers his effort worthy of recognition 11.

Protecting Gua from Orochimaru

Fugaku intercepts Orochimaru while the Sannin is following Gua. He suspects Orochimaru’s involvement in the disappearances, but cannot arrest him without evidence. Rather than dismissing the danger, Fugaku resolves to watch Gua and Itachi during their mountain outing 22.

When Orochimaru abducts Gua, Fugaku enters the laboratory, pulls the boy behind him, and confronts his captor. He subsequently brings the case before Hiruzen with other Uchiha, securing an investigation and challenging the village’s treatment of his clan 26 27.

Rebellion, alliance, and the Uchiha siege

Hiruzen’s suspicion that the Uchiha have concealed Gua’s talent provokes an unusually explosive reaction from Fugaku. He calls for rebellion at home, then becomes increasingly despondent about the clan’s options. Although he welcomes Itachi’s suggestion that the Uchiha leave Konoha as clan-minded reasoning, he rejects departure as impractical: many clansmen would refuse, just as they had refused to follow Madara 46.

During the Kumogakure crisis, Hiashi approaches him with an alliance proposal. Fugaku initially suspects that the Hyuga intend to sacrifice Gua, who helped save Hinata. Once Hiashi explains that cooperation would protect both clans from village pressure, Fugaku accepts a lasting Uchiha–Hyuga alliance 69.

When Konoha forces surround the Uchiha compound, Fugaku offers his own life as the sole scapegoat. The clan refuses to surrender him, prompting him to take up the Shrine’s Divine Blade and lead resistance. He had already refused to abandon the clan himself and urged Itachi to escape with Gua; Itachi instead chooses to remain beside his father 74.

Training the next generation in wartime

Fugaku later obtains Kabuto’s identification papers from Hiruzen, formalizing his place as Uchiha Kabuto despite Danzo’s surprise 97.

In Konoha Year 53, he requests permission to take Gua and Itachi to the Iwagakure battlefield during summer vacation. He regards combat experience as necessary preparation for clan heirs. Hiruzen recommends Kabuto and Izumi as possible teammates; Fugaku questions Kabuto’s Uchiha character and worries that Izumi would hold the boys back. The eventual group consists of Gua, Itachi, and Kabuto 180 184.

At camp, Fugaku assures Asuma that the children will not fight on the front line and initially assigns them quiet patrols near camp. After enemy infiltration exposes weaknesses in Konoha’s defenses, their patrols move outward. Fugaku secretly follows them, ultimately prioritizing Gua’s protection because he believes the boy’s potential is indispensable to the Uchiha’s future 184 186 191 193 194.

Kannabi Bridge and the revelation of Susanoo

Fugaku assigns the trio to destroy Kannabi Bridge, an important Iwagakure supply route. The demolition is coordinated with Asuma’s planned offensive; Gua later realizes that the children also served as bait for powerful enemies 204 211.

When Han attacks with a Tailed Beast Bomb, Fugaku saves the boys by revealing his crimson Susanoo. He subsequently holds his ground against both Five-Tails Kokuō and Four-Tails Son Gokū, forcing their hosts to retreat. This publicly exposes the strength he had kept hidden, astonishing Itachi and disrupting Obito’s ambush plan 208 209 210.

Obito then uses masked doubles and distractions to attack the children. Fugaku saves Gua and Itachi, but Kabuto is abducted. He initially refuses pursuit because Konoha’s main battle is already underway, then joins the front in Susanoo and rallies Konoha’s forces with news of the bridge’s destruction and the jinchūriki’s defeat 210 211.

Akatsuki rescue operation

Fugaku follows Gua into the Land of Rain to rescue Kabuto. At the Akatsuki hideout, he fights Kisame, Konan, and Juzo before entering the cave with only shallow cuts and damaged clothing. Faced with further opposition, he uses Susanoo again despite the danger to his eyes 215 216 228.

Unable to reach Gua directly while Pain and Kakuzu pressure him, Fugaku targets the vessel containing the recently sealed Four-Tails and Five-Tails. Damaging it forces the Akatsuki to prioritize containing the escaping chakra, allowing him to interrupt Obito’s attack and escape with Gua and Kabuto. He also retrieves Han’s body 229 230 231.

The escape leaves Fugaku exhausted, with blood flowing from his eyes. He refuses another mission to rescue Kakashi from Kamui, judging the risk excessive and the benefit to the Uchiha insufficient. Before returning to camp, he captures Rin Uzumaki and Karin, believing they may prove useful 231 232 233.

In his report to Konoha’s commanders, Fugaku presents Kabuto’s rescue as a joint decision with Gua, taking responsibility rather than exposing Gua’s unauthorized initiative. He also reports the Akatsuki’s tailed-beast hunt and Kakashi’s presumed death 233.

Rising prestige and political ambition

After confirming Gua’s Mangekyō awakening, Fugaku makes the awakening known while advising him to conceal its specific abilities. With both their Mangekyō now revealed, he wants Konoha to recognize that the Uchiha can no longer be easily suppressed 234 235.

Fugaku leads Konoha’s offensive deep into the Land of Earth, using a map to locate Iwagakure’s positions despite its terrain advantage. He repeatedly breaks enemy defensive lines, then halts at the Nian River rather than attempt a crossing under heavy fire. His victories greatly improve his reputation and the Uchiha’s standing in Konoha 236 237 242.

His subsequent meetings with unfamiliar shinobi alarm Gua. Fugaku eventually appears alongside Danzo at the Hokage Building and volunteers for the Kumogakure front. Oyama explains that Fugaku seeks to provoke a wider war to advance the Uchiha’s political ambitions; this does not establish Gua’s earlier suspicion that he intends to defect 254 255 256 257 258.

Appearance

Fugaku is repeatedly described with a grim or stern expression. The strain of leadership makes him appear weathered; after his confrontation with Hiruzen, he seems to have aged several years overnight 29 46.

  • Sharingan: Three tomoe are visible during his battlefield interrogation 190.
  • Mangekyō Sharingan: Possessed long before its public battlefield revelation; Gua remembers seeing it as a baby 190.
  • Ocular strain: Prolonged Susanoo use leaves blood flowing from his eyes and makes them appear dull and lifeless 231.

Personality

Fugaku is normally composed, restrained, and difficult to read. His authority commands respect even when clansmen consider him too mild. Privately, however, he is exhausted by responsibility and fears that making Itachi the clan heir will pass the same crushing burden to his son 11 29.

His concern often appears through action rather than warmth: rescuing Gua, checking the children for injuries, ensuring they eat properly, and secretly guarding their patrols. Over time, he becomes more natural at expressing concern for them 26 186 190 193 210.

That protectiveness is selective and politically informed. He values Gua’s future contribution above even Itachi’s safety, regards Kabuto’s rescue as dangerously costly, and refuses to risk the group for Kakashi. He can be blunt, obstinate, and indifferent toward people outside his immediate priorities 194 231 232 234.

Fugaku places the Uchiha before Konoha, but does not initially want an irreconcilable split. Once his own power is public and Gua awakens the Mangekyō, he becomes more willing to assert the clan’s interests openly. His later push toward war shows how far that political calculation can extend 235 258.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Fugaku is an accomplished illusion user whose expertise is trusted when Inoichi cannot access a prisoner’s sealed memories 190.

  • Replaces Itachi’s existing illusion without waking the captive, then constructs a false return journey to Iwagakure to elicit intelligence 190.
  • Disorients Kisame sufficiently that Konan and Juzo move to support him 216.
  • Inspires enough caution that Hiruko deliberately avoids meeting his eyes 199.
  • Limits: The interrogated prisoner eventually detects inconsistencies and kills himself. Fugaku also finds simultaneous control of multiple opponents much harder than controlling one 191 216.
  • Mangekyō abilities: His individual eye abilities are not identified in the provided account; Susanoo is his demonstrated Mangekyō power 208 209.

Susanoo

Fugaku manifests a towering crimson Susanoo capable of protecting companions and fighting tailed beasts 208.

  • Catches Han’s Tailed Beast Bomb, charged with eighty percent of Kokuō’s full power, and survives its explosion 208.
  • Holds his ground against both Kokuō and Son Gokū, catching their simultaneous Tailed Beast Bombs before their retreat 209 210.
  • Uses its hands to carry Gua during the escape from the Akatsuki hideout 231.
  • Uses its blades to damage the tailed-beast vessel and force a tactical opening 229 230.
  • Limits: Sustaining it heavily strains his eyes. Kakuzu’s combined elemental assault puts pressure on an incomplete manifestation, with some attacks penetrating through to Fugaku’s body 210 230 231.

Fire Release

Fugaku uses the Great Fireball Technique in encounters with Hiruko and the Akatsuki 199 215 216.

  • Burns Konan’s incoming paper attacks 216.
  • Counters: Hiruko absorbs and returns the fireball through Dark Release; Kisame splits one with Samehada 199 215.

Close-Quarters Combat

Fugaku combines speed, taijutsu, weapons, and evasive movement in close combat 210 216 229.

  • Destroys masked doubles with single punches or kicks while defending the boys 210.
  • Evades Kisame and Juzo’s attacks from opposite sides 216.
  • Limits: Pain and Kakuzu place him at a clear disadvantage when attacking together; he changes tactics rather than continuing a direct contest 229.

Command and Tactical Judgment

Fugaku coordinates demolition missions, contributes to defensive planning, and leads large-scale offensives 191 204 211 236.

  • Exploits the Akatsuki’s commitment to preserving captured tailed beasts to secure an escape 229 230.
  • Uses detailed terrain information to negate Iwagakure’s home-country advantage 236.
  • Stops pursuit at the Nian River rather than expose his troops to a dangerous crossing 237.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shrine’s Divine Blade — Taken up when the Uchiha reject his offer to surrender his own life during the siege 74.
  • Hizakiri and Higekiri — Twin swords wielded by his Susanoo, collectively called Oni Kiri. One radiates a black aura and the other white; their hilts bear crimson knee and beard markings 209.
  • Kunai — Used to defend against Pain and Kakuzu in close combat 229.
  • Land of Earth map — Guides his pursuit through Iwagakure’s hidden defensive positions. Kitsuchi suspects Jiraiya and Tsunade stole it during an earlier infiltration 236.

Relationships

  • Mikoto — Wife. She tries to calm his rebellion outburst and recognizes how intimidating his usual manner can be to Itachi 29 46.
  • Itachi — Eldest son and intended clan heir. Fugaku worries about burdening him, while Itachi chooses to stand beside his father during the siege. Fugaku later doubts that Itachi’s attachment to the clan extends beyond his parents 29 74 194.
  • Sasuke — Younger son, present during the family’s quieter moments and Fugaku’s argument about rebellion 29 46.
  • Uchiha Gua — Protected clansman and prospective future leader. Fugaku repeatedly risks himself for Gua, regards his growth as the Uchiha’s future, and advises him to preserve the secrecy of his Mangekyō abilities 194 228 235.
  • Uchiha Kabuto — Obtains his clan identification and supervises his battlefield service, but protects him largely for Gua’s sake and considers his rescue disproportionately dangerous 97 193 231 233.
  • Hyuga Hiashi — Rival clan leader turned ally through their shared refusal to surrender family or clansmen under village pressure 69.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Village leader whose suspicion angers Fugaku, though Fugaku later shows him considerable respect. Their relationship becomes increasingly strained by the Uchiha’s rising strength 46 97 180 243.
  • Danzo Shimura — Longstanding political antagonist who restricts the Uchiha and threatens their survival. Their later joint appearance and pressure on Hiruzen mark a significant change in their dealings 11 74 97 257 258.
  • Asuma Sarutobi — Northwestern-front commander who coordinates the Kannabi Bridge operation with Fugaku and receives his subsequent mission reports 184 211 233.
  • Obito Uchiha — Enemy who targets Gua and abducts Kabuto through deception. Kamui prevents Fugaku from reliably striking him even with Susanoo 210 231.
