Background / History
Root and Rescue in the Land of Grass
Kabuto formerly belonged to Root and infiltrated the Land of Earth, where he stole two valuable scrolls. Danzo later claimed that Kabuto had betrayed Root and defected, but Hiruzen treated that accusation skeptically. Root had also dispatched operatives to kill Kabuto and Yakushi Nonō; those operatives never returned 86 97.
In a poverty-stricken border town in the Land of Grass, Kabuto followed Gua’s family before collapsing. Gua bought food and gave him water, while Dashan and Nai helped carry him to an inn. After recovering enough to speak, he thanked his rescuers and introduced himself as Kabuto Yakushi 79.
Becoming Uchiha Kabuto
When Gua’s family debated whether to return to Konoha, Kabuto offered the intelligence he had stolen. The scrolls contained a detailed Land of Earth map and Dust Release information, giving the family something valuable to present to the village 86 87 97.
The family created the identity Uchiha Kabuto, supposedly Uchiha Oyama’s illegitimate son. Kabuto gladly accepted because it meant he would not be left alone. Although Hiruzen learned that the identity was fabricated, he allowed Kabuto to remain registered as a Konoha resident 88 97.
Root’s Attempted Capture
After the family returned, Root watched their home and eventually ambushed Gua and Kabuto on a secluded riverside path. The operatives invoked Kabuto’s alleged betrayal and demanded that both boys accompany them. Kabuto felt responsible for endangering Gua and prepared to protect him 98 100.
During the fight, Kabuto initially misread the leader’s approach, but Gua’s warnings enabled him to block sword attacks, counter, and evade Fire Release. Kakashi later reported that the boys had fought five Root shinobi, killing four while one escaped 101 105.
Work in Orochimaru’s Laboratory
Gua first considered scientific study for Kabuto after visiting Orochimaru’s laboratory. Kabuto did not yet understand the word “science,” but eagerly offered to learn. Gua subsequently sent him to the laboratory to keep Anko company and establish a place for him there 96 108.
Kabuto studied Gua’s manuscripts and sought explanations about refrigerators and Impure World Reincarnation. He passed Gua’s descriptions of future technology to Anko. His duties also included delivering meals, moving construction materials, and overseeing the rebuilding site and surviving experimental records after the laboratory’s destruction 137 138 151 161 162.
Battlefield Service and Abduction
Kabuto served alongside Gua and Itachi, detecting disguised intruders and helping patrol villages near Konoha’s camp. During the Kannabi Bridge operation, he carried and planted the explosives while his teammates held off the defenders 187 193 194 207.
After the mission, masked figures attacked the three boys while Fugaku protected them. Fugaku stopped the attackers targeting Gua and Itachi, but the figure behind Kabuto caught his wrist and warped away with him. Obito subsequently handed Kabuto to Hiruko as the promised “Uchiha” subject 210 212.
Hiruko repeatedly tested Kabuto’s blood with the Demon Bud technique. The experiments failed because Kabuto had no Uchiha bloodline. Furious, Hiruko nearly strangled him, then kept him alive and brought him to the Akatsuki base to confront Obito 212 213.
Rescue and a New Direction
Obito falsely told Gua that Kabuto had died. Kabuto was actually hiding nearby and, upon discovering that Gua had come to rescue him, tried to draw Obito away from the fight. Obito repeatedly intercepted him, turning the diversion into a cat-and-mouse chase 217 218.
Hiruko later seized Kabuto again and began choking him. Gua awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan during the crisis, cut off Hiruko’s gripping wrist, and freed Kabuto. Gua and Kabuto subsequently killed Hiruko 224 225 227.
Fugaku extracted both boys from the hideout. Afterward, Kabuto apologized for the trouble and resolved to pursue science rather than try to match Gua through ninjutsu, hoping to support him through research and logistics. He returned to the field camp with Gua and reunited with Itachi 231 233.
Appearance
- Hair: Slightly long and gray; he ties it back when not wearing a hat. He is reluctant to cut it despite Gua’s suggestion 85.
- Winter clothing: Wears a tiger hood during the cold weather in the Land of Grass 84.
- Youthful appearance: His apparent innocence helps him deceive hostile shinobi who underestimate children 187.
Personality
Kabuto places great value on belonging. He accepts the fabricated Uchiha identity without objection because remaining with Gua’s family matters more to him than his surname. When facing death, he recalls his brief periods of happiness with Nonō, Gua, Orochimaru, and Anko 88 224.
His loyalty is accompanied by strong self-reproach. He feels responsible when his past brings danger to Gua and later blames his own weakness for his capture. Nevertheless, fear does not make him retreat: he confronts Root and risks himself to distract Obito during Gua’s rescue attempt 100 101 218.
Kabuto is observant and capable of deception without being indiscriminately dishonest. He freely shares his stolen scrolls with Gua, quietly recognizes when Gua is bluffing, and uses a convincing display of innocence to lower enemy intruders’ guard 87 187.
His curiosity develops into a serious interest in research. He asks questions about Gua’s manuscripts, shares what he learns with Anko, and earns Orochimaru’s praise for both scientific talent and hard work 138 183.
Abilities & Skills
Close-Quarters Combat
Kabuto is a battle-hardened shinobi with chūnin-level strength at nine years old 98 101.
- Uses a kunai to intercept sword strikes, pressure retreating opponents, and launch surprise attacks 101 187.
- Rapidly adjusts his defense and counters when Gua supplies advance warnings 101.
- With Gua’s guidance, performs among the strongest chūnin in the exchange against Root’s leader; this is not presented as an independent increase in rank 101.
- Can misjudge an opponent’s intentions and lacks Gua’s ability to detect distant concealed Root operatives 98 101.
Infiltration and Tactical Judgment
- Infiltrates the Land of Earth and steals its detailed map and Dust Release information 86 87 97.
- Pretends to accept disguised intruders’ explanation before attacking with a kunai 187.
- Predicts increased enemy probing after an Iwagakure squad gathers information about Konoha’s defenses 194.
- Advises Gua and Itachi to alert one another rather than engage an infiltrating squad alone 194.
Scientific Research
Orochimaru explicitly describes Kabuto as gifted at scientific research and hardworking 183.
- Studies Gua’s manuscripts and seeks explanations of unfamiliar concepts 137 138.
- Can understand portions of a ninjutsu manuscript, though its dense formulas and formations overwhelm him 135.
- Handles surviving experimental records and laboratory reconstruction oversight 161.
- Chooses research and logistical support as his intended contribution after the Akatsuki rescue 231.
Demolition
- Carries the explosives assigned to the Kannabi Bridge operation 207.
- Plants the charges beneath the bridge while Gua and Itachi protect him 207.
Equipment / Items

- Land of Earth map scroll — Stolen intelligence detailing major roads and narrow trails; offered to Gua’s family before their return to Konoha 86.
- Dust Release scroll — The second stolen scroll. Possessing its information does not establish that Kabuto can use the technique 87 97.
- Demolition explosives — Carried and planted during the Kannabi Bridge mission 207.
Relationships
- Uchiha Gua — Rescuer, family member, teammate, and scientific guide. Despite being several years older, Kabuto comes to rely on Gua as though Gua were his older brother 79 138 225.
- Uchiha Nai and Uchiha Dashan/Oyama — His new parents within Gua’s household. Their cover story identifies him as Oyama’s illegitimate son; Kabuto later visits them as his parents 88 137.
- Yakushi Nonō — A cherished person from his earlier life. Root targeted both of them, and Kabuto remembers his happiness with her when threatened with death 97 224.
- Orochimaru — Laboratory superior and scientific mentor who praises Kabuto’s research aptitude and work ethic 161 183.
- Anko — Senior laboratory colleague and recipient of the ideas Kabuto learns from Gua. Their cooperation includes a less flattering episode in which she leaves him carrying her bricks 138 161.
- Uchiha Itachi — Patrol and mission teammate. Itachi protects Kabuto during the bridge demolition and is present when he returns after the rescue 194 207 233.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Battlefield guardian and eventual rescuer. He protects Kabuto partly for Gua’s sake but bluntly acknowledges the danger caused by the rescue 193 231.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Allows Kabuto’s Konoha residency to stand despite learning that his Uchiha identity is fabricated 97.
- Shimura Danzo — Former Root superior who orders action against him and demands his elimination after recognizing his new identity 97 106.
- Obito Uchiha — Abductor who trades him to Hiruko, lies about his death, and toys with his attempt to divert attention from Gua 210 212 217 218.
- Hiruko — Captor and experimenter who mistakes him for a biological Uchiha. Kabuto and Gua ultimately kill him 212 224 227.
