Background / History

Temple Master and Mordo’s Betrayal

The Ancient One teaches the sorcerers of the Himalayan Temple. Mordo, her senior disciple, learns his magic from her, while Druid follows a different path centered on bodily evolution and develops mind power with her assistance. Her intention to pass the title of Sorcerer Supreme to Stephen provokes Mordo’s rebellion 245.

Mordo believes his talent and years defending the Temple entitle him to succeed her. His attempted ambush fails, and Druid delays him until she emerges unharmed. She reveals that she knew of his dealings with Dormammu and rejects him as a successor because of his dark magic and demonic associations. Despite this, she offers him a final chance to repent through a hundred years of secluded penance. Mordo refuses and summons Dormammu 245 246.

Dormammu’s Return

When Dormammu threatens the Temple’s inhabitants, the Ancient One transfers herself and him into an uninhabited dimension. Their battle destroys that space, but she survives behind a nearly exhausted golden shield and traps him within sealing barriers 247.

Doctor Doom and Mephisto arrive to assist Dormammu. Doom challenges her claim to the title of Sorcerer Supreme and redirects her own spells against her with his “Switch” technique. Maintaining the seal while defending herself proves impossible; Dormammu escapes, and she retreats rather than fight all three opponents 249.

She returns to the Himalayas and removes the Temple and everyone inside before Dormammu can retaliate. In New York, she creates a concealed dimensional refuge, masking the disturbance with a storm. Tony nevertheless detects her magic and approaches her 250.

Alliance with Tony Stark

The Ancient One explains that she can contend with Dormammu alone but cannot safely face him alongside his allies. She seeks Tony’s assistance and gives him her spell compendium in advance as payment. Their agreement grants Tony techniques suited to his enormous reserves of magical power 251.

Their cooperation deteriorates during the confrontation. Tony insists on fighting Dormammu while leaving her to face Doctor Doom, Zarathos, and Mephisto. He deliberately waits for her to weaken before acting, and the three opponents severely injure her 264 265 266.

After Tony orders Mephisto to kill Zarathos, she begins questioning the apparent moral divide between her ally and their enemies. Zarathos’s refusal to surrender and Mephisto’s unchanged cruelty lead her to reconsider everything that has happened since meeting Tony 268.

Exposing the Demon King

The Ancient One tests Tony’s darkness and uses magic to expose a dark-energy connection between his heart and Zola in the Shadow Kingdom. Tony confirms his identity as a demon king. She interrupts his attempt to make Dormammu and Mephisto fight for servitude and proposes that they unite against him. Mephisto refuses, but Dormammu temporarily transfers his Dark Dimension authority to her in exchange for a promise to restore part of it 269.

Empowered by the Dark Dimension and Earth’s world source, she attacks Tony directly. He catches her magic sword and injects incompatible Shadow Kingdom power into it, causing an explosion that gravely wounds her. Unable to sustain the combined sources indefinitely, she sends a clone carrying Dormammu’s Darkness Mark at Tony while escaping with her true body. Tony consumes the clone and obtains part of the Mark 270.

She also withdraws her entire subspace refuge after blocking Tony’s attack on it. Mephisto reports that losing the Mark has shortened her lifespan, although she still has roughly three thousand years remaining 270.

Gathering Resistance

The Ancient One seeks Hyperion to restore Thanos’s access to resurrection through a psychic link with another Eternal God. She defeats Hyperion and brings him to Earth, but her description of Tony’s conquests inspires admiration rather than opposition. Her attempt to imprison him with Captain Marvel’s help fails when he breaks out of her pocket dimension 281 282.

She later protects Star-Lord by persuading Ego to withdraw his living planet. To intimidate him, she makes her penetration of his planetary defenses appear instantaneous; the feat actually requires nearly three days of work concealed through the Time Stone 303.

After rescuing Star-Lord, she falls asleep exhausted and becomes the target of Loki’s elaborate prank. He traps her in a nightmare, pours mineral water on her, and teleports her bed into the Temple square. She interprets the intrusion as proof that Tony has located her refuge and orders an immediate departure from Earth. Her pocket dimension is subsequently moved to the Moon’s core 310 312.

The Power of All Beings

The Ancient One searches billions upon billions of possible futures for a way to avert the catastrophe she believes Tony will bring. She recruits Thanos and continues gathering strength, explaining that her loyalty ultimately lies with humanity 312 314.

During the Anti-Demon Alliance’s campaign, she warns that the Dark Generals cannot be permanently killed while Tony lives. After receiving the Space Stone, she suspects that its delivery—and the generals’ lack of effort—were deliberately arranged. The alliance retreats to reassess Tony’s intentions 324 325 326.

Her proposed Power of All Beings combines the heroes’ energy into a collective force capable of threatening Tony. He reveals that he encouraged her research because its negative counterpart can strengthen his Ultimate Darkness. When he attacks the alliance, Captain Marvel’s eruption of energy creates an opening for the Ancient One to teleport herself and the others away, but Tony absorbs Captain Marvel’s energy and memories and obtains the model 326 327.

Investigating Tony and the Final Battle

The Ancient One restores her condition with the Time-Space Stone and seeks further help across spacetime. The Tyrannical Dragon King, whom she had imprisoned for thousands of years, challenges her account of Tony’s empire. Investigating it herself, she finds a society containing many kinds of beings, with resurrection and opportunities to grow stronger. His argument that Tony is a saint to his own subjects shakes her certainty 329 330 331 334.

She enters infinite time and space to investigate Tony’s origins. Comparing countless variants, she concludes that he is not the original Tony Stark but an unknown soul from another universe possessing an unfamiliar devouring essence. Unlike the other versions of Tony, he has never relied on engineering or Iron Man armor to attain power 334.

Despite her doubts, she prepares for war. In the final clash, she gathers multiple essences from her allies, abandons her physical body, and enters Holy Spirit Mode. Tony detonates more than twenty essences and summons the Eight Great Demons, leaving her spirit form cracked and unable to draw energy from the surrounding darkened spacetime. She restores her body and offers a sacrifice to call for help; her strongest spacetime incarnation rescues her and her allies, carrying the conflict beyond the immediate battle 334.

Appearance

The Ancient One is referred to as an old woman. Her most clearly described distinguishing feature is the dark symbol that appears when she invokes her connection to the Dark Dimension 245 269.

  • Forehead mark: A dark-red, double-hooked symbol that becomes increasingly vivid as her dark authority manifests 269.
  • Holy Spirit form: Replaces her abandoned physical body during the final battle; develops visible cracks after Tony’s essence explosion 334.

Personality

The Ancient One initially presents herself as composed, gentle, and protective. She knows of Mordo’s corruption but allows him an opportunity to turn back, and she removes her battle with Dormammu from the Temple to protect its inhabitants. Her disappointment in her disciple coexists with a willingness to forgive him 246 247.

She is pragmatic rather than committed to fighting at any cost. She retreats from unfavorable battles, relocates her entire Temple, bargains with Dormammu for dangerous power, and uses clones to escape Tony. Her protective aims do not prevent her from deceiving or manipulating others 249 250 269 270 303.

Her composure is also imperfect. She resents Tony’s exploitation of their alliance, hopes to see him humbled, and becomes furious after Loki publicly humiliates her. Nevertheless, even while watching Tony fight after abandoning her, she remains prepared to intervene if he is endangered 266 310.

Her opposition to Tony is rooted particularly in loyalty to humanity. The Tyrannical Dragon King exposes the limits of her assumptions about dark creatures and confronts her with the empire’s inclusive society. Although this causes genuine uncertainty, she ultimately chooses continued resistance 314 334.

Abilities & Skills

Spatial and Dimensional Magic

  • Space Transfer: Instantly transports herself and a designated target into another dimensional space 247.
  • Dimensional refuge: Creates a hidden pocket dimension and relocates the Temple together with its occupants 250.
  • Large-scale relocation: Withdraws her entire subspace dimension from Tony and later places her refuge inside the Moon 270 312.
  • Long-distance rescue: Retrieves Star-Lord, though pinpointing and transporting him over an immense distance causes severe mental exhaustion 310.
  • Emergency evacuation: Uses an opening in Tony’s attack to teleport her allies to safety 327.

Time Magic and Future Sight

  • Searches billions of possible futures for a chance to defeat Tony 312 314.
  • Uses time duplicates to fight Thanos and attack the Black Order without committing her true body 276.
  • Conceals almost three days of work against Ego’s defenses, making the result appear instantaneous 303.
  • Restores her own condition with the Time-Space Stone 329.
  • Explores the River of Time and Space and compares Tony’s counterparts across countless universes 334.

Combat Spellcasting and Sealing

  • Casts a meteor-based Forbidden Spell; Dormammu counters it by transforming the meteors into rain 247.
  • Uses a golden shield strong enough to survive an attack that destroys the surrounding dimension 247.
  • Splits into four figures and surrounds Dormammu with golden, rune-marked sealing barriers 247.
  • Must maintain the seal: Doom’s interference diverts her attention and allows Dormammu to escape 249.
  • Constructs a magic longsword comparable to a divine artifact, but cannot safely channel away the incompatible power Tony forces into it 270.
  • Uses the Dragon Skin Spell defensively when Loki makes her believe Tony has appeared 310.

Dark Dimension Authority

  • Possesses her own claim to the Dark Dimension and accepts a temporary transfer of Dormammu’s authority 269.
  • Combines dark-source power with the Blue Planet’s world source to strengthen herself 270.
  • Places Dormammu’s Darkness Mark in a clone as an escape decoy; Tony consumes it and obtains part of the Mark 270.
  • Losing the Mark reduces her remaining lifespan, according to Mephisto 270.

Physical Strength and Healing

  • Has substantial physical strength despite being a mage; the narration states that she could perform push-ups with a cosmic battleship on her back 276.
  • Defeats Hyperion through a combination of superior overall power and magical versatility, although he manages to give her a black eye 281.
  • Stops her own bleeding and dissolves embedded sword fragments with magic after Tony injures her 270.

Power of All Beings

  • Develops a collective-energy model intended to unite heroes’ power against the Demon King 326 327.
  • Separates energy at the particle level; its positive and negative versions support and counteract one another 327.
  • Tony considers the model capable of killing his present body, although his resurrection complicates any lasting victory 321.
  • Its negative counterpart provides Tony with a route to an upgraded Ultimate Darkness 327.

Essence Containment and Holy Spirit Mode

  • With Infinity Stone support, can safely contain five or six essences in her ordinary condition 334.
  • Can sustain the combined source powers of two dimensions for only about ten minutes before her physical body is ruined 270.
  • Abandoning her body allows her spirit to contain more than eighteen essences and combine multiple world sources without conflict 334.
  • Fighting as a spirit carries a final risk: exhausting her soul would leave nothing remaining 270.
  • Her spirit form is still vulnerable to sufficient force and loses access to surrounding energy when Tony darkens spacetime 334.

  • Her seemingly effortless intimidation of Ego actually requires nearly three days of work hidden by time manipulation 303.
  • Loki uses three Infinity Stones merely to soak her bed and expose her publicly. Her explanation is so implausible that the witnesses prefer to believe she has weak kidneys 310.
  • She initially underestimates the Tyrannical Dragon King’s intelligence because of his hulking appearance, despite his thousands of years studying a specialized subject 334.
