Background / History
School Life and Wasuke’s Death
Before entering jujutsu society, Yuji spends time with two friends in his school’s Paranormal Research Club. A track-and-field teacher changes his club application without permission, hoping to direct his extraordinary athletic ability toward the national team. Yuji rejects the commitment because he has things to do after school and defeats the teacher in a shot-put contest 37.
Yuji regularly visits his hospitalized grandfather, Wasuke Itadori. Before dying, Wasuke tells him to save others whenever possible and to die surrounded by people. These instructions become central to Yuji’s decisions; when he later repeats them to Kamo Xu, Megumi senses his cursed energy respond, confirming that the words carry a curse 38 41.
Becoming Sukuna’s Vessel
After Wasuke’s death, Megumi approaches Yuji about Sukuna’s Finger. Learning that his upperclassmen intend to unwrap it, Yuji accompanies Megumi to the school and refuses to leave his friends in danger 38.
Kamo Xu initially restrains and questions him, but accepts him as human after hearing his answers. During the subsequent Grade 2 cursed spirit attack, Yuji fights despite Megumi’s warning that physical strength alone cannot exorcise a curse. After being struck, he swallows the finger, allowing Sukuna to incarnate and destroy the spirit 41 42 43.
Yuji regains control after Kamo fights Sukuna. Kamo stops Megumi from exorcising him and introduces him to Gojo. A second controlled release lets Gojo test Sukuna, after which Yuji takes his body back again 45 46.
Juvenile Detention Center: Death and Revival
At the Juvenile Detention Center, Yuji and Megumi argue over retrieving a victim’s body. Megumi challenges indiscriminate rescue by describing the victim’s repeated crimes; Yuji counters by asking why Megumi saved him despite Sukuna’s presence. Their argument gives the cursed spirit an opportunity to separate the students 53.
Yuji stays behind against the special grade Dai Tian so Megumi can evacuate Nobara. Dai Tian blasts off his left leg and leaves him near death. Kamo arrives and heals him, but Yuji’s clouded consciousness fails to register the rescue. Hearing their agreed safety signal, he releases Sukuna as originally planned 55.
Sukuna tears out Yuji’s heart during the ensuing conflict. Yuji eventually retakes control, apologizes for the trouble and his argument with Megumi, and dies before Kamo or Riko can save him. He later revives in Shoko Ieiri’s operating room 63 64 67.
Secret Training and Return
Gojo and Shoko keep Yuji officially recorded as dead so he can train before the Higher-Ups learn of his revival. Gojo teaches him cursed energy control and domain fundamentals, while Kamo’s punishing sparring sessions reshape his fighting style. Nanami subsequently teaches him to track cursed residue during the cinema investigation 67 73 78 79 89 90.
While investigating Junpei Yoshino, Yuji bonds with him over movies, particularly Worm Man 3. Their friendship forms before Yuji learns that Junpei has become a curse user 100 118.
Gojo reveals Yuji’s survival during Goodwill Event training while openly defying the Higher-Ups. Nobara initially mistakes him for Sukuna and attacks him; afterward, she and Megumi confront him over keeping his return secret, and he apologizes 108 109.
Yasohachi Bridge and His Brothers
On a mission with Riko, Megumi, and Nobara, Yuji rescues his teammates from Eso’s Wing King and recognizes Junpei among their opponents. He tries to reach his friend but is drawn into combat with Eso, Kechizu, and Choso 116 117 118 120 121.
When Junpei prevents him from protecting Nobara, Yuji abandons immediate negotiation and fights him. He lands Black Flash, but accumulating poison steadily paralyzes him. To counter Junpei’s ranged barrage, he destroys Yasohachi Bridge’s supports and launches falling rubble as projectiles 124 127 128 132.
Yang Xu’s intervention interrupts the battle. Despite having fought Junpei, Yuji pulls him behind Riko’s domain for protection. Afterward, Yang Xu reveals that Yuji is the younger brother of Choso, Eso, and Kechizu. All three instinctively shield him from Yang Xu’s test punch, recognizing their relationship 134 142.
Appearance
- Hair: Short and pink 37.
- Build: A sturdy body repeatedly noted for its extraordinary physical strength 46 121.
- Clothing: Wears a hoodie during several encounters; it is torn during Kamo’s inspection and damaged in later combat 45 118.
- Sukuna’s manifestation: Dark markings spread across his body, additional eyes appear, and his fingernails can become long black claws. The markings fade when Yuji regains control 44 46.
Personality
Yuji is cheerful, blunt, and enthusiastic about movies and superhero-like powers. He remains excited to learn from Gojo even after his death and revival, but becomes visibly dejected when told he cannot simply awaken an innate cursed technique 37 71 72 100.
His instinct is to protect others, often before considering his own safety. Wasuke’s final instructions reinforce this tendency: he charges into the school fight, stays behind against Dai Tian, and initially struggles with Megumi’s belief that some people should not be saved 38 43 53 55.
His straightforward manner does not prevent emotional perceptiveness. He notices the sorrow beneath Gojo’s strained smile and suspects it involves Kamo. Training also makes him less impulsive in combat, teaching him to settle his anxiety, observe attacks, and exploit openings rather than rely solely on toughness 79 89 120.
Abilities & Skills
Superhuman Physical Ability
- Possesses exceptional strength and speed without initially relying on cursed energy 37.
- Carries Megumi and Nobara out of Wing King’s range after breaking the spike pinning Megumi 117.
- Crushes Choso’s fingers to interrupt Piercing Blood and overpowers him in close quarters 121.
- Destroys bridge supports with reinforced punches and kicks falling masonry toward Junpei 132.
Cursed Energy and Hand-to-Hand Combat
- Learns energy control from Gojo and practical combat through repeated sparring with Kamo 73 89.
- Develops sensitivity to an opponent’s killing intent, emphasizing evasion and precise counterattacks 89.
- Uses experience with Kamo’s blood attacks to assess Choso’s Piercing Blood and recognize the danger of Supernova 121 122.
- Limits: Has no demonstrated innate cursed technique or dedicated ranged attack. Choso’s superior energy control and ranged techniques remain serious disadvantages when Yuji cannot close the distance 72 122.
Divergent Fist
- Delivers damage in two stages: the physical blow, followed by a delayed cursed energy impact 117.
- Shatters Eso’s hardened blood spike with the second impact, though the force also aggravates Megumi’s injured leg 117.
Black Flash
- Aligns cursed energy with a physical strike within one ten-thousandth of a second; the resulting attack raises its power to the exponent of 2.5 127.
- Uses it against Moon Dregs after trapping many of the shikigami’s tentacles 127.
- Riko earlier identifies that he held back a Black Flash during his attack on Choso 121.
Sukuna Suppression
- Can deliberately release Sukuna and subsequently retake control, astonishing Gojo 46.
- Remains aware of events during Sukuna’s domain clash with Kamo 79.
- Limits: Suppression is not instantaneous or guaranteed under every circumstance. Sukuna’s prolonged takeover at the detention center leaves Yuji with a fatal missing heart when he returns 55 64.
Poison Resistance and Endurance
- Continues running and fighting after doses of Junpei’s neurotoxin sufficient to incapacitate ordinary adults 127 128.
- Limits: Resistance is not immunity. Repeated exposure numbs his arm and progressively paralyzes his body 127 132.
- Is also affected by Eso’s Rot after contact with Kechizu’s blood 120 123.
Cursed Residue Tracking
- Receives field instruction from Nanami on following cursed energy traces while investigating the cinema 90.
Relationships
- Wasuke Itadori — Grandfather. His final instructions shape Yuji’s commitment to saving others and become a curse carried by him 38 41.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Teammate and friend. Their disagreement over rescue ethics strains them, but Megumi defends Yuji against Sukuna and grieves his apparent death 53 63 109.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Teammate and friend. Yuji repeatedly acts to protect her; her anger at his secret revival reflects how deeply his apparent death affected her 55 109 117 124.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and protector. Conceals Yuji’s revival, teaches him cursed energy, and declares that he will protect both Yuji and Kamo from the Higher-Ups 67 72 108.
- Kamo Xu — Rescuer and combat mentor, affectionately called “Uncle Kamo.” Yuji admires him while fearing his brutal training; Kamo refuses to treat him as expendable merely because he houses Sukuna 68 71 89.
- Kento Nanami — Field mentor. Teaches investigation fundamentals and helps Yuji understand Kamo’s past 90 91.
- Aoi Todo — Self-proclaimed best friend and “brother”; contributes to Yuji’s Black Flash training 112 127.
- Junpei Yoshino — Friend turned opponent. Their shared love of movies brings them together; Yuji later fights him but still pulls him to safety 100 118 124 134.
- Riko Amanai — Teacher and mission leader during the Yasohachi Bridge incident 116 127.
- Ryomen Sukuna — Hostile occupant of his body. Yuji can suppress him, but Sukuna’s actions endanger both him and those around him 46 55 64.
- Choso, Eso, and Kechizu — Older brothers, initially encountered as enemies. Their instinctive protection confirms the relationship revealed by Yang Xu 121 142.
