Organization and Culture

Main Family

  • Location: The extraterrestrial Main Family exists outside ordinary worlds and can observe potential target worlds from multiple directions 207.
  • Hierarchy: Strength determines standing. Reishiki treats weaker clansmen as beneath him, with even his teammates functioning more like servants 207.
  • Genealogy: Having one’s name preserved in the clan’s Genealogy is considered important proof of having lived. Invaders offer Kaguya this recognition if she submits to sacrifice 205.
  • Ultimate ideal: Members seek to become the God of Ōtsutsuki. No active member has achieved this ideal; Yame is identified as the closest recorded figure 204.

Lunar Families and Descendant Bloodlines

  • Hamura takes some clansmen to the moon, where they initially live peacefully 218.
  • After his death, conflicting interpretations of his final words divide his descendants into Main and Branch Families 218.
  • The lunar Branch Family believes the war-torn Shinobi World should be destroyed and remade. It eventually exterminates the peace-loving lunar Main Family 218.
  • The Uchiha and Uzumaki are offshoots of the Ōtsutsuki bloodline. The Sharingan and Wood Release also originate from the Ōtsutsuki 95 176 179.

Appearance

  • Horns: A distinguishing feature of the bloodline. Naruto and Sasuke grow small horns on one side of their foreheads as their Karma transformations finish 195.
  • Byakugan: Described as standard among pure-blooded Ōtsutsuki. Reishiki’s vision has no blind spots 193.
  • Rinnegan: Associated with the clan’s shinjutsu; Momoshiki uses a Rinnegan in his palm for absorption and to retrieve a black rod 154 163.
  • Exceptions: Toneri is born without eyes and relies on unusually strong sensory perception 218 219.

Personality

Many invading Ōtsutsuki regard other worlds’ inhabitants as inferior life-forms. Momoshiki openly disparages humans, while Reishiki and his companions treat outsiders as insignificant creatures whose lives depend on their whims 154 155 194.

Their pride extends to survival itself: although Karma is a lifesaving technique, using it is considered humiliating. Strength also breeds resentment within the clan; after death removes their power differences, weaker clansmen turn against the formerly dominant Reishiki 193 207.

These attitudes are not universal. Hamura’s lunar Main Family favors peace, Kaguya eventually cooperates with Chinatsu, and Toneri chooses to experience life in the Shinobi World rather than remain isolated on the moon 201 218 220.

Abilities & Skills

Innate Power and Longevity

Ōtsutsuki are born with immense power rather than needing the intensive training required by ordinary humans 154.

  • Many live for thousands or tens of thousands of years, sustained by world origin power 207.
  • Severe torso injuries are not necessarily fatal; Shishiki continues fighting after Naruto punches through his body 195.
  • Removing their sustaining power can cause ancient members to die immediately. Chinatsu leaves surviving members powerless 207.
  • Their souls are not invulnerable: Chinatsu sends the dead Ōtsutsuki into reincarnation 207.

God Trees and Chakra Fruits

The clan’s principal method of growth converts a world’s power into consumable chakra 184.

  • God Trees absorb a world’s essence and produce concentrated Chakra Fruits 184 200.
  • Consuming a fruit strengthens its eater and makes them that world’s chakra progenitor 200.
  • The process devours life and severely damages the harvested world 154 194.
  • The ritual requires an Ōtsutsuki sacrifice. Kaguya is originally designated as the sacrifice for the tree planted with Isshiki 155.
  • Repeated harvesting is intended to bring members closer to becoming the God of Ōtsutsuki 154 200.

Karma

Karma is the clan’s secret reincarnation technique, transferring more than a spirit alone 154.

  • Gradually transforms a vessel’s body into one with pure Ōtsutsuki blood and enables the donor’s reincarnation 154.
  • Requires a suitable vessel. Isshiki’s weak host cannot sustain his full power for long without breaking down 155.
  • Chinatsu modifies Naruto and Sasuke’s Karma so they inherit power without receiving Momoshiki’s or Isshiki’s consciousness 193.
  • Ōtsutsuki signatures can identify Karma recipients as their donors: the arriving Main Family elites initially mistake Naruto and Sasuke for Momoshiki and Isshiki 192 193.

Shinjutsu

Individual members possess different supernatural abilities; these are not interchangeable across the entire clan.

Member Ability Applications and limits
Momoshiki Takami Musubi Stores absorbed ninjutsu in a separate space and returns it with amplified power. It accepts senjutsu without petrifying him, but does not protect him from direct taijutsu 154 163.
Kinshiki Chakra weapon creation Converts absorbed chakra or his own chakra into weapons, including an axe and projectiles 158 162 163.
Isshiki Daikokuten Stores objects in a separate world and retrieves them anywhere within his field of vision 173.
Isshiki Shonamiguna Described as shrinking things, including himself; the Main Family elites already know its strengths and weaknesses 195.
Maishiki Gravity manipulation Pins Naruto and Sasuke beneath fifty times normal gravity. Sasuke turns the effect against her by swapping positions with Amenotejikara 193 194.
Shishiki Corrosive Blood Uses corrosive blood offensively and as armor. In Kaguya’s acid ocean, the armor requires constant replenishment 195 198.
Reishiki Omnipotence Uses other clansmen’s shinjutsu with the same effects and costs as their original wielders, including gravity manipulation and Corrosive Blood 197.

Space-Time Techniques

Space-time powers are especially highly regarded among Ōtsutsuki shinjutsu 165.

  • Kinshiki’s spatial vortex crosses thousands of miles and can access both Kamui’s dimension and Kaguya’s dimensions 155.
  • Momoshiki opens a space-time vortex in an attempt to escape Chinatsu 171.
  • Kaguya’s Amenominaka changes the surrounding dimension, while Yomotsu Hirasaka opens spatial rifts 171 173 198.
  • Some later invaders use spatial severing techniques to cut the vines restraining them 206.

Background / History

Kaguya’s Rebellion

Kaguya and Isshiki arrive in the Shinobi World in ancient times and plant a God Tree using the Ten-Tails’ body. Rather than accept her designated sacrifice, Kaguya gravely wounds Isshiki, sacrifices him, and consumes the resulting Chakra Fruit. Isshiki narrowly survives through Karma, while Kaguya is eventually sealed by her sons 155.

The Early Arrival

Zetsu deliberately draws Momoshiki and Kinshiki to the Shinobi World decades ahead of the expected timeline. They attack Isobu in the Land of Water, then locate Isshiki and form an alliance to free Kaguya. Their plan requires a Ten-Tails jinchūriki and Infinite Tsukuyomi, with Chinatsu identified as the intended vessel 154 155.

The pair hunt tailed beasts for chakra before confronting Chinatsu in Konoha. Naruto and Sasuke join the battle after receiving Hagoromo’s remaining power. Chinatsu ultimately reverses Kaguya’s attempted possession, seals her within herself, and defeats Momoshiki and Isshiki; their powers survive through the altered Karma given to her brothers 158 162 164 170 176.

The Main Family’s Investigation

After four clansmen disappear, the Main Family sends Reishiki, Maishiki, and Shishiki to investigate. They detect Naruto and Sasuke’s inherited signatures, uncover their attempt to impersonate Isshiki and Momoshiki, and demand the identity of whoever modified their Karma 190 192 193.

Naruto and Sasuke seal Maishiki but are overwhelmed by the remaining elites. Chinatsu returns after merging with the world’s natural energy, while Kaguya fights Shishiki in the Strong Acid World. Chinatsu then sacrifices all three elites, converting their chakra back into natural energy 194 198 201.

Defeat and the Forbidden World

The strengthened Shinobi World attracts another group of Ōtsutsuki seeking valuable Chakra Fruits. Chinatsu captures the invaders and strips the Main Family of its world origin power, using it to strengthen the world further. Ancient members die, survivors lose their power, and the dead souls enter reincarnation 204 205 207.

The clan later strictly forbids revenge expeditions to the Shinobi World. Two self-proclaimed geniuses disregard this prohibition and are reduced to dust by Chinatsu; no later invader is reported to have returned alive 221.

Relationships

  • Chinatsu Uchiha — Initially targeted as Kaguya’s vessel; ultimately becomes the defender who makes the Shinobi World forbidden territory for the clan 155 201 221.
  • Zetsu — Uses his connection to Kaguya’s consciousness to lure Momoshiki and Kinshiki into the world 154.
  • Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha — Descendants, opponents of the invading members, and inheritors of Momoshiki’s and Isshiki’s powers 164 176 195.
  • Tailed beasts — Treated by Momoshiki and Kinshiki as divided nourishment for the God Tree and hunted for chakra 154 158.
  • The Shinobi World — First a source of exceptional Chakra Fruits, then a protected world that consumes its would-be harvesters’ power 184 201 207.

Trivia

  • “Ichiraku Otsutsuki” is an online joke recalled by Chinatsu, imagining the ramen-shop owner revealing a Rinnegan and ramen-covered Truth-Seeking Orbs. It is not evidence that he belongs to the clan 8.
  • Although Karma offers reincarnation, the Main Family’s defeat demonstrates that Ōtsutsuki longevity depends on power that can be removed 154 207.
