Background / History

Clark grows up on Earth with adoptive parents at Kent Farm. His father instructs him not to reveal his abilities to ordinary people, and he spends years learning to manage his heightened senses. Yang Bo later credits his adoptive parents’ kindness with shaping his protective character 276 277 282.

Seeking answers about his origins, Clark quits a tavern-waiter job and joins an expedition in northern Canada as a porter. There, Yang Bo approaches him and reveals that a Kryptonian spacecraft lies beneath the glacier. Clark initially distrusts the stranger, especially when Yang Bo requests blood in exchange for help against the Kryptonians who may follow the ship’s signal 277 278.

Inside the ship, Clark inserts his necklace-like key into a console and activates an image of Jor-El, built from his biological father’s memories. Jor-El identifies him as Kal-El and explains Krypton’s history and his arrival on Earth. Clark later learns that the Codex of Life has fused with his body and contributes substantially to his rapid growth 279 290.

Appearance

  • Build: Handsome and exceptionally muscular; his physique immediately impresses Barbara, Rocket, and Bruce Wayne 276 280.
  • Kryptonian suit: Form-fitting, ink-blue armor prepared by Jor-El, bearing an S emblem 282 406.
  • Expedition clothing: Wears a cap while working as a porter and needs much less cold-weather clothing than the humans around him 277.
  • Civilian clothing: Appears in London wearing a light-blue suit and black-framed glasses 438.

Personality

Clark is protective and reluctant to harm innocents. He refuses Yang Bo’s initial proposal to let a robot injure Lois as part of a staged rescue, and he worries about both humanity and the Kryptonians during Zod’s invasion. His preferred solution is to defeat his people without exterminating them and give them a new home 281 284 289 290.

Despite his restraint, Clark enjoys fighting opponents who can challenge him. Sakaar gives him the freedom to use his strength without hiding his identity, and repeated arena battles develop both his confidence and his appetite for close combat. Once he makes a serious decision, even Kara finds it difficult to change his mind 284 290 484.

He also develops a playful streak. He admits that he waited for the team to assemble so he could show off, helps Yang Bo position a truth-inducing rug where Bruce will step on it, and pretends to be an embittered former prisoner to unsettle Barry 394 395 408.

His reluctance to kill does not remain absolute. After accepting that Zod’s death can secure a future for the other Kryptonians, he personally kills a parallel Zod rather than leaving the responsibility to Ophira 407 411.

Abilities & Skills

Kryptonian Physiology and Solar Absorption

Yellow sunlight strengthens Clark and restores his depleted energy 282 284 484.

  • Recovers consciousness under Sakaar’s yellow sun after losing to Thor 284.
  • Benefits from Earth’s different atmosphere and gravity; explains these adjustments to Kara 407.
  • The Codex of Life accelerates his growth. Removing it would cost him at least ninety percent of his strength and could kill him 290.

Superhuman Strength and Durability

Clark’s physical power allows him to crush machinery and overwhelm opponents who are formidable to other heroes 281 396.

  • Crushes an engineering robot into a ball with his bare hands 281.
  • Damages Sakaar’s arena floor so extensively that Yang Bo replaces it with bedrock 283.
  • Overpowers Faora, Zod, Steppenwolf, a Deviant, and a parallel Superman 290 291 396 438 483.
  • Is not completely invulnerable: early injuries come from a vibranium needle and a robot blade, while Thor’s lightning and Darkseid’s Omega Beams also harm him 280 281 284 485.

Regeneration and Physical Adaptation

Clark heals rapidly and becomes tougher in response to injury and sustained combat 281 284 485.

  • Repairs a cut palm almost immediately, with increased skin durability afterward 281.
  • Heals a shoulder pierced by an Omega Beam while fighting in sunlight 485.
  • Regularly trains against enchanted weapons, Kryptonian Heat Vision, and mages, building tolerance for severe physical damage 485.

Heat Vision and Super Breath

Clark projects destructive beams from his eyes and can exhale a powerful freezing wind 278 284.

  • Uses Heat Vision to carve precise tunnels through glacial ice and escape a deep launch silo while carrying Kara 281 406.
  • Kills Steppenwolf with Heat Vision and pierces Ikaris’s armor in a direct beam exchange 396 439.
  • Uses freezing breath against Thor, forcing him to protect himself with lightning 284.
  • His Heat Vision does not initially overcome Darkseid’s resistant body and armor 485.

Flight and Superhuman Speed

Clark can hover, transport others, and fight at speeds that challenge advanced targeting systems 283 440 485.

  • Reaches Lois before a descending robot blade can strike her 281.
  • Carries Kara out of captivity and Sersi aboard Yang Bo’s cloaked ship 406 440.
  • Evades fleet cannon fire even when the ships’ computers calculate his movements 485.

Enhanced Senses and Superbrain

Clark combines extraordinary perception with exceptional memory and rapid learning 277 280 283.

  • Selectively hears Yang Bo speaking from the arena stands 283.
  • Recognizes Bruce Wayne from television, newspapers, and magazines 280.
  • Learns combat techniques during arena matches and develops effective evasion 283 387.
  • His senses cannot detect Yang Bo while Yang Bo remains concealed 278.

Bioelectric Field and Source Wall Protection

Yang Bo identifies Clark’s extraordinarily powerful bioelectric field as one of his defining abilities. Clark also possesses protection from the Source Wall 276 401.

  • The biofield is invoked to explain his Heat Vision interacting with Thor’s lightning 284.
  • Source Wall protection prevents Darkseid’s Omega Beams from doing more than physical damage to him; it does not stop the beams from wounding him 485.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kryptonian key necklace — Activates the buried ship’s console and the memory-based image of Jor-El 279.
  • Kryptonian suit — Prepared specifically for him by Jor-El. Yang Bo suggests that it may assist solar absorption, but this is not confirmed 282.
  • Kryptonian spacecraft — Discovered beneath the Canadian glacier; Clark prepares to pilot it away after learning his origins 278 280 282.
  • Teleportation Scrolls and Totems of Undying — Given to Clark and Diana before their involvement with the Eternals and Celestials 438.
  • Lasso of Truth — Temporarily uses a rope against Ikaris, but lacks the divine power or Yang Bo’s special qualities needed to make it coil around the target automatically 439.
  • Superman comics and movies — Supplied by Yang Bo, allowing Clark to learn about versions of himself and events that his own world has avoided 388 391.

Relationships

  • Yang Bo — Friend, trainer, and protector. Their alliance begins with a blood-for-assistance agreement; Yang Bo brings him to Sakaar and helps secure a future for the Kryptonians. Clark later trusts him completely with his defeated counterpart 278 280 283 289 484.
  • Bruce Wayne / Batman — Justice League teammate. Their first meeting is friendly, though Bruce studies possible countermeasures against him. Yang Bo’s intervention prevents their original conflict 280 282 388.
  • Lois Lane — Romantic interest. Clark rescues and comforts her after Yang Bo arranges their encounter, then remains concerned for her safety 280 281 282 290.
  • Martha Kent — Adoptive mother. Her safety is an immediate concern when Clark learns that Kryptonians may destroy humanity 278.
  • Jor-El — Biological father. His stored image explains Clark’s heritage and provides his Kryptonian suit 279 282.
  • Kara Zor-El / Kara-El — Older first cousin from a parallel universe. Initially described as his older sister, she later explicitly identifies their relationship as cousins. Clark rescues her and teaches her power control; she chooses to live with him 405 406 407 411.
  • Thor — Arena rival. Defeats Clark with lightning, but the two acknowledge each other’s strength without hostility 284.
  • Hulk — First arena opponent to defeat him. Clark subsequently becomes capable of fighting Hulk alongside other warriors 283.
  • Ophira — Kryptonian subordinate who addresses him as “Commander El,” secures a parallel Zod’s forces, and follows his orders 411.
  • General Zod — Enemy whose plans threaten Earth. Clark initially requests mercy for his own world’s Zod but personally kills a parallel version 291 411.
