Appearance
Hisoka is a handsome, exceptionally tall man with short, fiery-red hair and a magician-like outfit 125 214.
- Height: Approximately 1.9 meters 178 214.
- Decoration: Playing-card suits adorn his face and body 125.
- Eyes: Described as long and slender 136.
- Disguises: Uses Texture Surprise to change his apparent face; one cinema disguise gives him black hair 194 261.
- Temporary injuries: After fighting Chrollo, he has a mangled face, a missing arm, half a missing leg, and extensive blast wounds. Joey subsequently restores his body 136.
Personality
Hisoka pursues combat for pleasure, taking particular interest in exceptional talent and powerful opponents. He thinks of promising fighters as fruit to cultivate and eventually harvest, and of established opponents as dolls in his collection. Kite initially interests him more than Joey because Kite is already an accomplished head-on combatant; Joey’s rapid development later makes him an increasingly desirable opponent 111 113 164 214.
His preference for satisfying duels does not prevent him from exploiting bystanders, terrain, or deception. During his arena match with Chrollo, he rejects Joey’s attempted contact because outside cooperation would diminish his enjoyment, yet uses spectators as weapons and considers killing everyone who could conceal Chrollo. Afterward, he accepts a borrowed clone ability as repayment in kind for Chrollo’s use of other Troupe members’ powers 128 132 215.
Despite his provocative manner, Hisoka is cautious about his own survival. He refuses to let Joey’s dangerous right hand touch him during treatment and demands to know both the cost and the means of reversing the handkerchief’s effects before accepting it. He also openly admits that he has no confidence in defeating Ging, whom he calls a monster 136 165 323.
His cooperation is transactional rather than dependable. He values Joey as a source of healing, information, and opportunities for isolated duels, while continuing to test his defenses and anticipate fighting him. His indifference toward other passengers’ deaths sharply separates his priorities from Joey’s 165 214 216.
Abilities & Skills
Bungee Gum
Bungee Gum gives Hisoka’s pink aura adhesive and elastic properties, allowing him to connect targets and control movement through tension and contraction 111 133.
- Remote weapon control: Keeps playing cards and severed heads attached to Nen strands, allowing attacks to continue after their initial trajectory 111 127.
- Projectile reversal: Catches Gotoh’s propelled coins and Franklin’s Nen Bullets, then launches captured projectiles back with increased speed 196.
- Mobility: Pulls himself toward ceilings, retracts out of explosions, and swings away from gunfire 133 196 319.
- Traps: Stretches strands between fleeing spectators and the ground to turn them into slingshot projectiles. He later prepares an entire corridor with concealed strands to isolate Phinks 133 272.
- Restraint: Pins hostile hair-like tentacles to the ground, preventing them from breaking free 330.
- Range manipulation: Attaches Nen to Nobunaga’s wound and pulls him away before his draw slash, keeping the sword outside striking distance 215.
- Emergency body substitutes: Shapes replacement limbs and plugs wounds with Nen, enabling him to remain active despite catastrophic injuries 135 136.
- Defensive limit: Franklin’s larger Double Bowl Cannon projectile penetrates the Bungee Gum stretched between his hands 196.
Texture Surprise
Texture Surprise creates convincing surface disguises, including false skin and altered facial appearances 135 164 194.
- Concealing injuries: Covers Nen-made replacement limbs and extensive wounds so that Hisoka appears physically intact 135 136.
- Identity concealment: Allows him to pass as Juan among the Twelfth Prince’s guards 164 165.
- Disguising others: Joey recruits him to conceal Kacho and Fugetsu’s faces during an operation in the VVIP Area 221.
- False remains: Leaves a temporary surface imitation of a destroyed clone, misleading Nobunaga about both the number of clones and the placement of Bungee Gum 215.
- Not healing: The appearance of recovery does not remove his actual injuries 136.
- Category conflict: Joey warns that entering the handkerchief’s full Conjuration state could compromise Hisoka’s facial disguise 165.
Borrowed Clone Ability
Joey’s God Script-assisted handkerchief gives Hisoka access to a Conjuration-based clone ability associated with Ming’s skin 165 166.
- Rapid adaptation: Hisoka quickly learns to control the fixed-framework ability, impressing Joey 178.
- Combat coordination: Uses a clone to bait attacks while the real Hisoka exploits openings, particularly the recovery intervals between Nobunaga’s sword strokes 215.
- Impersonation: His clone is disguised as Phinks for the staged confrontation in Room 12 and later as the Twelfth Prince 193 222.
- One-clone limit: Only one genuine clone can exist at a time; apparent additional bodies are Texture Surprise imitations 215.
- Transformation limit: Hisoka cannot independently turn his approximately 190-centimeter clone into Kacho. Joey supplies the necessary physical transformation 178.
- Item requirements: The handkerchief must remain against his body, with God Script assisting its use 165.
- Long-term risk: Joey warns that prolonged use could lead to Hisoka’s soul being assimilated into another existence in roughly ten years 165.
Nen Technique and Close Combat
Hisoka combines exceptional speed, concealed aura, and Nen-reinforced weapons with detailed analysis of enemy abilities 128 136 193.
- Shu: Reinforces ordinary playing cards until they can cut flesh and serve as surgical tools 136.
- In: Hides probing aura and Bungee Gum attachments from ordinary sight 165 215.
- Speed and precision: Deflects Victor’s bullet with a card and kills two King’s Army Nen users before they can follow his movements 193 222.
- Tactical deduction: Analyzes Chrollo’s ability sequence, identifies constraints on puppet production, and deliberately exploits Nobunaga’s five-meter attack range 128 215.
- Pain tolerance: Cuts away his own damaged tissue without losing focus during treatment 136.
- Preferred distance: Seeks close combat against Franklin rather than trading attacks with an Emitter at range 196 197.
Postmortem Revival
Hisoka returns from death after his battle with Chrollo; Chrollo later explicitly acknowledges that revival 314.
- Joey infers that Hisoka placed Bungee Gum on his heart and lungs before dying, with vows and limitations intended to restart them afterward 134.
- The precise cost of that revival is not established in the provided account 134.
Musical Skill
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Playing cards — Flexible weapons reinforced with Shu, controlled through Bungee Gum, and concealed against his body 111 136.
- God Script-enhanced handkerchief — Borrowed from Joey to provide temporary Conjuration access and the clone ability 165 166.
- Button-like ladybug — Given to him by Joey as a relocation signal; crushing it tells Joey to return to their meeting room three hours later 194.
- Flashbangs and grenades — Uses flashbangs to interrupt the sensation of being watched and explosives to break through cabin floors during the search aboard the rising ship 315.
- Unidentified object from the Gatekeeper — Receives it after stopping to speak with the Gatekeeper at the Dark Gate 351.
Relationships
- Joey — Healer, information source, and intermittent partner. Their exchanges provide Hisoka with restoration, clones, and opportunities to hunt the Troupe, but both remain wary of the other 135 136 165 214.
- Chrollo Lucilfer — Former leader and principal combat target. Chrollo’s arena victory leaves Hisoka severely injured; Hisoka continues pursuing him and later insists that Chrollo be reserved for him in a proposed joint attack 134 136 307.
- Illumi Zoldyck — Associate during the pursuit of Killua. Hisoka later recommends Illumi’s assassination services to Joey, including a referral discount 113 136.
- Kite — Highly desirable opponent after their probing battle on Kansi Mountain. Hisoka initially tries to include a future fight with Kite in his bargain with Joey 113 135.
- Kurapika — Previous collaborator against the Phantom Troupe and later battlefield ally. Hisoka initially hides his Juan identity from him to preserve the Troupe hunting game 164 197 272.
- Kacho and Fugetsu — Operational allies whom he disguises and protects during the VVIP Area ambush 221 222.
- Ging Freecss — Prospective opponent whom Hisoka finds immensely exciting while acknowledging his overwhelming strength 322 323.
- Gatekeeper — His stated reason for boarding the Dark Continent-bound ship; their eventual meeting results in Hisoka receiving an unidentified object 165 351.
History
Election and Kansi Mountain
Hisoka sees Joey at the Hunter Association election and recognizes him when they meet on Kansi Mountain. As Killua escapes using Godspeed, Kite blocks Hisoka’s path. Hisoka simultaneously tests Joey with a concealed, Bungee Gum-connected card and exchanges attacks with Gotoh 111.
The encounter remains a probing battle rather than an all-out fight. Afterward, Hisoka is particularly taken with Kite’s changing weapons and skill in direct combat, judging him more appealing than Joey’s still-developing assassination ability 111 113.
Heavens Arena and Restoration
Hisoka challenges Chrollo in a Floor Master match at Heavens Arena. Chrollo combines stolen abilities, puppets, explosives, and disguises to dictate the battle’s pace. Hisoka gradually deciphers parts of the strategy and wounds Chrollo, but is forced into an exhausting defense and suffers devastating explosions 125 128 132 133.
Following his defeat and revival, Hisoka negotiates with Joey. Their agreement exchanges the bodies of two Troupe members and Hisoka’s friendship for healing. Hisoka kills Kortopi and then Shalnark, both of whom had lent their abilities to Chrollo without yet recovering them 134 135.
At a hotel, Hisoka removes the disguises covering his injuries and cuts away damaged tissue while Joey restores his body. They discuss possible cooperation beyond Lake Mobius, leaving a future partnership open for reconsideration aboard the ship 136.
Infiltrating the Twelfth Prince’s Guards
Aboard Black Whale 1, Hisoka adopts the identity Juan. He deliberately frightens Marayam so that he will be removed from the Seventh Queen’s immediate group and left among the guards assigned to Momoze, the Twelfth Prince 165.
After allowing himself to be captured, Hisoka reveals himself to Joey and kills three restrained men with playing cards. He asks Joey to conceal his identity from Kurapika. To give him an alternative ability he can safely disclose, Joey lends him the God Script-enhanced handkerchief. Hisoka also reveals that his larger purpose aboard the ship concerns the Gatekeeper 164 165.
King's Area Incursion
Joey and Hisoka exploit the violence triggered by Slaka’s assassination attempt to launch an operation against the King’s Area. Hisoka kills Slaka and Victor, then stages a corridor battle against his own clone disguised as Phinks. The apparent Troupe intrusion is part of their deception, not an encounter with the real Phinks 193.
Under Joey’s fog cover, they breach the King’s Area and search for Nasubi, who is absent from the expected room. Afterward, Hisoka changes his appearance and leaves with the Phinks-disguised clone 193 194.
Hunting the Phantom Troupe
Hisoka openly appears in the Fifth Floor cafeteria and battles Franklin. He returns Nen Bullets with Bungee Gum, evades heavier attacks through prepared movement, and introduces clones into the confrontation. His subsequent contact with the Ai Yi Yi Family further complicates the lower tiers’ factional conflict 196 197 198.
He later bargains with Joey for fifteen minutes alone with Nobunaga. Exploiting Nobunaga’s fixed five-meter range, Hisoka uses clones and concealed attachments to defeat him. The Troupe subsequently confirms Nobunaga’s death and adopts a policy of moving in groups of at least two 214 215 228.
Hisoka also assists Joey’s royal substitution operation, sending Kacho and Fugetsu back to safety after killing two King’s Army Nen users during an ambush 222.
When the remaining Troupe members refuse to separate, Hisoka engineers a three-on-three confrontation involving Joey and Kurapika. His prepared corridor traps pull Phinks away from his companions; later reports establish that Phinks was seriously injured in their fight 272 302.
Black Whale Crisis
Hisoka remains aboard Black Whale 1 rather than evacuating with Chrollo’s group. He joins Joey and Kurapika in forcing a path through the King’s Army and searching the cabins during the ship’s ascent toward the black aura 314 315.
He penetrates the First Queen’s barrier after recognizing that it excludes Nen and hazards but not human bodies. Inside, he redirects gunfire and immediately targets the stronger bodyguards who intervene 319 320.
After Joey turns time back one hour, Hisoka agrees to help him again in exchange for a fight on the Imaginary Continent. Ging follows Hisoka to their meeting, provoking both excitement and wariness from him 322 323.
The later “Hisoka” who transforms into Camilla is a false figure within her Guardian Nen Beast’s wish-created world, not a revelation of Hisoka’s true identity 333.
Dark Continent Expedition
Hisoka travels with the Zoldyck Family’s team after the voyage. At the Dark Gate, he stops to speak with the Gatekeeper and receives an object before the expedition crosses onto the Dark Continent 341 351.
During the forest expedition, he separates from Joey to travel alone as the group tests the monsters’ targeting behavior 375.
Later, he leaves Cheadle’s group with Zigg, Illumi, and Kalluto to explore other Stone Gates rather than pursue the difficult assassination of Brion. They witness Nurarihyon’s confrontation with Small Town’s mayor 427.
At his latest documented appearance, Hisoka and the three Zoldycks are rested and ready near the surviving Troupe members. Chrollo declines to attack because his own group must devote Nen to suppressing goldification and risks intervention from the Zoldycks 444.
