Background

Ging trained Kite, who later became Joey’s teacher. His reputation predates his direct involvement with Joey: Netero acknowledged him as one of the world’s top five Nen users, and he helped create Greed Island alongside companions including Razor, List, and Dwun 33 341 370.

After the Hunter Association’s Chairman election, Ging and Pariston left the Zodiacs; Morel and Kurapika filled the resulting vacancies. Ging subsequently joined Beyond Netero’s expedition team, spending heavily to become its second-in-command. His principal reason for joining was to reach the Dark Continent 147 369.

Personality

Ging values discovery more than ownership. In the Ancient City, he is more interested in exploring ruins than competing for their treasures; Dwun describes him as being in “enjoyment mode” throughout the expedition. Even when reflecting on humanity’s destructive research, Ging maintains that the process of exploration—not its eventual outcome—is what draws him onward 399 447.

His curiosity can make him deliberately intrusive. He admits that he is willing to annoy someone if questioning them satisfies his own interests, and compensates Joey with five hundred million Jenny after probing his memories and secret ability. His pragmatism can become ruthless: to force another time reset, he kills the Eighth Queen after identifying despair as the trigger for Joey’s ability 306 331.

Despite this, Ging is an attentive teacher and companion. He shares his understanding of Nen without holding back, approves of Joey’s caution about revealing abilities, and notices when the pressures of leading the expedition make Joey impatient. He also prefers to trust capable companions rather than hesitate indefinitely over their decisions 323 324 337 371.

Abilities & Skills

Nen Mastery

Ging combines exceptional technical knowledge with precise control, rather than relying solely on aura quantity 33 446.

  • Fine control: Twists an attacking bird by flooding it with Nen, then restores his own lost momentum without disrupting the group’s ascent. Joey considers this beyond his own control despite having greater aura capacity 446.
  • En: Extends approximately eighty to one hundred meters, although En is not his specialty 417.
  • Enhanced observation: Concentrates Nen in his eyes to inspect distant machinery and examine the walls of a dark pit 324 379.
  • Combat assessment: Joey believes he would probably lose to Ging unless he could overwhelm him through sheer power 446.

Emission and Aura Weapons

Ging is an Emitter whose aura works effectively with Joey’s abilities 388.

  • Fires ranged Nen Bullets alongside Razor against the Ancient City’s animated statues 372.
  • Imbues wooden spikes with Nen when Joey cannot project his own aura into the target area 388.
  • Forms two Nen Blades capable of cutting apart tentacles 394.
  • States that he can remotely blast holes through floors by locating the correct points and sending Nen to them 323.
  • Limit: His Nen Blades cannot penetrate the light-absorbing monster encountered inside a train carriage 394.

Ging places an unnamed ability on himself that detects disturbances associated with Joey’s time reversal. Its visible indicator is a wound on his arm, where blood gradually beads 322 332.

  • Recognizes that Joey has activated a time-reversing ability and uses the wound’s behavior to investigate its operation 322 332.
  • A fresh activation of Bites the Dust resets Ging’s investigation, leaving him with only one wound and incomplete information about earlier loops 332.
  • Makes the wound emit light before moving to the Seed Urn and shattering it; Joey observes no teleportation during this movement 335.
  • Unconfirmed mechanics: Joey speculates that Ging may collect abnormal stretches of time for later use, but the ability’s full rules are not disclosed 335.

God Script

Ging learned God Script from Dwun and understands its use in amplifying Nen and sustaining specialized effects 370.

  • Leaves Joey an inscription intended to keep his mind clear, while warning that it will bring backlash forward 144.
  • Suggests combining the work of multiple creators when Joey struggles to incorporate God Script into creatures made with Gold Experience 367.
  • Draws on previous encounters with ancient Nen mechanisms to interpret the Ancient City’s unfamiliar systems 373.

Creature Control

Ging teaches Joey how Nen, temporary vows, and limitations can be used to control powerful creatures 338.

  • Demonstrates the difference between trained aura and a creature’s dispersed life energy by extending Nen toward a giant eagle’s head, making it shudder 338.
  • Explains that control can become dangerous if its vows are broken or lifted; affected creatures may retaliate against their former controller 338.
  • Uses a Nen Beast to investigate a soul-like entity in the Tower. The probe is destroyed after its heat is drained away 453.

Exploration and Research

Ging has explored numerous ancient ruins and restricted zones, encountered many Magical Beasts, and accumulated extensive practical knowledge of dangerous environments 337.

  • Helps establish that Brion’s seeds invade living bodies from outside and identifies the frost’s role in suppressing life energy 369.
  • Captures and studies a God Script-marked beast with List and Razor 371.
  • Recognizes that the expedition is traveling through an enormous tree root, possibly belonging to a stunted World Tree, and extracts wood to test his conclusion 379.
  • Identifies an ancient solution capable of increasing aura capacity through immersion 399.
  • Interprets records concerning the Fields, the Herb, Immortality Disease, and the Ancient City’s artificial sun and moon 420.

Tactical Planning and Close Combat

Ging coordinates multiple factions while adapting plans to their motives and limitations 307 323.

  • Organizes roles for the Hunter Association, Mafia, Phantom Troupe, and hidden Nen users during the crisis aboard Black Whale 1 307.
  • Sabotages machinery connected to the First Queen’s barrier, then escapes before it can enclose him 324.
  • Helps exclude untrusted participants from the ascending King’s Area 325.
  • Seizes a dagger embedded in the Town Chief’s waist and cuts him in half during an opening in his defenses 435.

Equipment & Items

  • Ming Skin — Uses Ming and is familiar with the difficulties Joey encounters when combining its benefits with Gold Experience and God Script 337 367.
  • Specialized tools — Carries tools with varied abilities that Joey considers exceptionally difficult to guard against 417.
  • Mysterious key — Retrieves a key-like object from the research institute. Later tests its guidance rather than following its indicated route without question 410 429.
  • Camera — Photographs the Ancient City’s statues in detail during the expedition 371.
  • Kalluto’s paper doll — Gives Beyond a doll that can help him locate Ging’s team; its effect can be canceled if the team does not want Beyond to join them 385.

Relationships

  • Gon Freecss — Son. Gon's friendship with Joey contributes to Ging’s sense of closeness to Joey 32 323.
  • Kite — Student and a source of information about Joey. Ging contacts him while investigating events in East Gorteau 306 323.
  • Joey — Ally, informal pupil, and expedition partner. Their initially uncomfortable cooperation develops into open instruction and a shared commitment to exploration 306 337 369.
  • Razor — Greed Island companion. Ging asks him to recruit Joey and originally keeps him and the other game creators as a reserve force aboard Black Whale 1 144 314.
  • Dwun — Greed Island companion and Ging’s God Script teacher 370.
  • List and the Greed Island creators — Longstanding companions who accompany Ging in search of new places to explore 341 385.
  • Beyond Netero — Expedition leader and former teammate. After leaving his team, Ging arranges for Beyond to potentially join his independent expedition later 369 385.
  • Pariston — Rival in repeated contests of planning and manipulation. Their exchanges become routine entertainment for Beyond’s teammates 314 341.
  • The Zodiacs — Former colleagues. Although Ging sometimes acts without consulting them, they recognize his expertise and support his intervention in the King’s Area 324 325.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Preparing for the Dark Continent

Joey initially seeks Ging’s advice through Kite about the Kakin princes’ Guardian Nen Beasts. Ging later sends Razor to approach Joey, predicting that the two will need each other’s help on the Dark Continent. He also leaves Joey God Script and a warning about its backlash 138 144.

Ging’s interest is partly based on his investigation of East Gorteau. His analysis leads him to suspect that Joey possesses a hidden time-related ability, which he believes could be important to the expedition’s survival 306.

Black Whale 1 and Nasubi

Ging waits for Joey at the Ai Yi Yi Family’s base. There, he identifies Nasubi Hui Guo Rou as Brain and explains that his brainwashing can make Nen users believe they are organs or body parts. Ging tests Joey’s memories and abilities for signs of this influence, while also probing for his suspected time power 306.

He then helps organize an operation against Nasubi. Rather than leaving the task entirely to Joey, he proposes involving the Zoldycks, the Hunter Association, the Mafia, and other powerful passengers 307.

In one iteration of events, Ging concludes that Black Whale 1 cannot be saved and evacuates aboard a submarine prepared by Beyond’s team. He regrets being unable to find Joey before leaving and brings his Greed Island companions along rather than risk abandoning them aboard the ship 313 314.

Cooperation Across Time Resets

After detecting Joey’s time reversal, Ging returns to help find another solution. The two plan to control access to the King’s Area and investigate the machinery beneath it. Ging discovers the First Queen’s connection to the ascent mechanism, sabotages its lines, and later joins the effort to remove unwanted passengers from the rising area 322 323 324 325.

Ging proposes constructing additional Coffin Areas to absorb the ship’s black aura. Realizing that the plan requires another reset, he identifies despair as Joey’s trigger and shoots the Eighth Queen, destroying their immediate escape option. Bites the Dust activates again, allowing Joey to carry the plan into the next iteration 331 332.

In the renewed attempt, Ging helps mobilize the Kent Family to construct Coffin Areas. These structures and openings in the hull weaken the black aura enough to expose Nasubi’s position. After Nasubi’s defeat, Ging offers Joey three hundred million Jenny for a copy of the map on the recovered Ming Skin 332.

Ging subsequently uses his own time-related ability while approaching the Seed Urn and destroys it with a touch 335.

Unexplored Waters

Ging and Joey spend much of the onward voyage riding giant birds above Black Whale 1, returning mainly for supplies. During this period, Ging teaches Joey Nen applications and exploration techniques without withholding his knowledge. Joey comes to recognize the same kind of guidance he previously received from Kite 337 338.

Ging later leads Beyond’s assembled specialists across the Imaginary Continent, arguing that conflict with the Hunter Association is unnecessary before they reach the Dark Continent 341.

Independent Expedition and the Ancient City

When disagreements arise within Beyond’s Team, Ging leaves and invites Joey to form a separate expedition. Their party includes the Greed Island creators, Hisoka, Zigg, Illumi, and Kalluto 369.

Their goals overlap without being identical: Joey and the Zoldycks seek a way to resolve the threat of Brion, while Ging wants to investigate the Ancient City and ultimately explore the wider Dark Continent. Ging agrees to help Joey, who in turn intends to accompany him afterward 385.

Inside the research institute, Ging favors investigation over racing the other factions for control of Brion. He identifies aura-enhancing solution, recognizes the experiment chamber as a manufacturing site for the Hundred Ghosts, and suggests that Brion itself may belong to that category 399 405.

The Fields, Tower, and World Tree

In the Fields, Ging interprets records explaining the Herb’s curative properties and the Scarecrow’s relationship to Immortality Disease. Later, he guides the group cautiously through unfamiliar territory, deliberately testing the mysterious key rather than trusting it outright 420 429.

At the Giant Tree, he reaches a flower-surrounded wooden house and communicates that its sleeping occupant must be awakened and accepted. During the subsequent confrontation, he helps kill the Town Chief 433 435.

The expedition eventually leaves the giant beast’s back, survives a boundary where distance and size become distorted, and continues through the Tower’s dangers. Upon finally seeing the World Tree’s continent-like branches, Ging declares that the adventure he has long sought is beginning 446 453 459.
