Background / History
Kurta Clan and Yorknew City
Kurapika survived the Phantom Troupe’s massacre of the Kurta Clan and devoted himself to recovering his people’s stolen Scarlet Eyes and pursuing their killers. By the voyage to Kakin, he had recovered most of the eyes; the remaining collection belonged to Fourth Prince Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou 171.
In Yorknew City, Kurapika killed Uvogin and became known to the Troupe as the Chain Killer. His conflict with the group temporarily subsided after Chrollo Lucilfer lost his Nen ability. Kurapika subsequently made recovering the remaining Scarlet Eyes his immediate priority 171 197.
Recruiting Joey
One month before the B.W. Ship’s departure, Kurapika visited Joey’s villa with Mizaistom. He offered money, access to the Dark Continent, and a clean identity that would allow Joey to join a prince’s security team. He also disclosed the presence of a mole within the Hunter Association, explaining that he trusted Joey because Gon and Killua did 153.
Kurapika’s commission was to create an opportunity for a private meeting with Tserriednich. After Joey revealed the Succession War and its Guardian Spirit Beasts, Kurapika coordinated a group that included Biscuit, Hanzo, Melody, Basho, and Izunavi, arranging intelligence sharing through the Association’s Q system 154 155.
Protecting Momoze and Teaching Nen
Aboard the ship, Kurapika became a principal decision-maker in Twelfth Prince Momoze’s guard detail. He negotiated a truce with Third Prince Chorai: Chorai’s guards would first learn Nen and verify the instruction’s safety before the prince himself received training 165 166 183.
Kurapika also approached First Prince Benjamin, revealing his Scarlet Eyes as evidence of his personal grievance against Tserriednich. He sought pardons for the Twelfth and Thirteenth Princes and a private meeting with the Fourth Prince. Benjamin agreed only to pardon Momoze, as the Thirteenth Prince had already been killed 171.
To help weaker factions survive, Kurapika offered Nen instruction to the princes’ guards despite Benjamin’s initial anger. He awakened Momoze’s Nen and later began initiating guards through his Steal Chain, using Joey’s borrowed Gold Experience. Danjin was the first guard called for the private procedure 166 171 183.
Capturing the Fourth Prince
An attempted approach during a banquet failed when Tserriednich’s Guardian Nen Beast obstructed Joey. Kurapika signaled him to withdraw rather than escalate the confrontation 180.
Kurapika and Joey later accepted Tserriednich’s lunch invitation and fought him in his quarters. Kurapika attempted to bind the prince’s heart, but the chain did not establish the restriction he believed it had. The pair nevertheless captured Tserriednich and moved him to Room 12 183 185 186.
Kurapika initially intended to force Tserriednich to repent under Judgment Chain. He ultimately decided that keeping him alive served no purpose, particularly because the Scarlet Eyes had not been brought aboard. Joey then killed the prince with Killer Queen, leaving Kurapika to recover the eyes from Kakin afterward 186.
Wanted by Kakin
After Tserriednich’s death, Kurapika shifted his attention toward protecting Momoze and keeping the Succession War deadlocked until the ship reached the Imaginary Continent. He continued teaching Nen and assessed the Ninth Prince’s condition after a curse left the prince dependent on a fragile balance between two Nen beasts 189 221.
Kurapika later fled with Joey and Momoze to the VVIP Area. The King’s Army issued wanted notices identifying him as Joey’s companion and accusing him of taking the Twelfth Prince. This also increased the danger from the Phantom Troupe and Kakin’s Mafia families 258 261.
After escaping a freezing Nen space with Joey, Kurapika fought Phinks while directing his chain toward Franklin. He used the encounter to investigate how much the Troupe knew about his identity. He subsequently entered Mizaistom’s custody, with Cheadle attempting to mediate his position against Kakin’s demands 268 269 273 279.
The Ship’s Crisis and Return Plans
When the First Tier reopened, Kurapika chose to investigate the Phantom Troupe independently rather than accompany Mizaistom to meet V5 personnel. His wanted status still required him to use a disguise 302.
During the later crisis, Kurapika confronted the revived Eighth Queen and helped Joey investigate Momoze’s abnormal behavior. Using her diary and his experience guarding her at night, he argued that her attack on the Fourteenth Prince contradicted her wishes. He and Joey suspected Nasubi of manipulating her and influencing her Guardian Nen Beast 316 326 329.
Kurapika then activated Emperor Time and attempted to steal a Guardian Nen Beast’s ability with his index-finger chain. The beast burst into streams of black aura, but the passage does not establish that he successfully acquired its ability 330.
Afterward, Kurapika worked with Mizaistom to handle the cruise ship. On reaching the Imaginary Continent, he chose not to continue toward the Dark Continent, explaining that his unfinished business lay in Kakin. Cheadle placed the Hunters remaining on the coast under his charge 338 340 343.
Appearance
- Formal clothing: Wears a black suit that Joey describes as giving him a refined air 153.
- Scarlet Eyes: Can reveal his clan’s distinctive eyes by removing his contact lenses 171.
- Concealing lenses: Uses contact lenses to hide his Scarlet Eyes during negotiations 171.
- Right-hand chains: His chains are conspicuous enough for observers to associate them with his Nen category and possible number of abilities 175 204.
Personality
Kurapika is polite, observant, and difficult to deceive. He brings a gift when first visiting Joey and deliberately establishes common ground through their mutual acquaintances. Joey considers his clear thinking and insight more formidable than his abilities, noting that even an offhand remark can give Kurapika grounds for a deduction 153 165 166.
His hatred of the Phantom Troupe is irreconcilable, but he can subordinate revenge to an immediate objective. While pursuing Tserriednich, he remains sufficiently controlled to avoid displaying hostility that might trigger the prince’s Guardian Nen Beast. His treatment of Tserriednich nevertheless shows his willingness to impose obedience through force or authorize a killing 165 171 180 186.
Kurapika is intensely self-reliant and recognizes the same tendency in Joey. He reflects that Gon, Killua, and Leorio prevented him from remaining alone. He is also explicit that Joey need not avoid harsh methods on his account: he has experienced darkness and does not consider himself as innocent as Gon 258 269.
His personal ambitions do not extend to political advancement. When Benjamin offers him a future in Kakin, Kurapika declines, saying that he only wants to remain quietly beside his people once his mission is complete 171.
Abilities & Skills
Scarlet Eyes and Emperor Time
Kurapika normally belongs to Conjuration, but activating his Scarlet Eyes changes his category to Specialization. Emperor Time allows him to use all six Nen categories at one hundred percent efficiency 40 286 330.
- Enables analysis of abilities extracted and stored through Steal Chain 183.
- Supports much of his versatility beyond his ordinary category 268.
- Consumes his lifespan while maintained, making prolonged use dangerous 186.
Steal Chain
The chain on Kurapika’s index finger can pierce a target to temporarily extract and store their Nen ability 183.
- Continued extraction can leave the target in a condition resembling Zetsu 183.
- Can lend a borrowed ability to someone else, semi-forcibly awakening that person’s Nen 183.
- Successfully lends Gold Experience to Danjin, who grows a lily and awakens his own Nen 183.
- Retaining a stolen ability has side effects; Kurapika declines to keep Tserriednich’s ability after the capture 186.
- Can be directed at a Guardian Nen Beast, although his attempted theft does not receive a confirmed successful outcome 330.
Chain Jail
Kurapika’s middle-finger chain restrains its target and was used alongside Judgment Chain during his conflict with the Phantom Troupe 186.
- Restricted exclusively to members of the Phantom Troupe 186.
- Using it against anyone outside the Troupe would cause the Judgment Chain in Kurapika’s own heart to kill him immediately 186.
Judgment Chain
Kurapika’s little-finger chain pierces a target’s heart and imposes rules they must obey. Breaking those rules causes the chain to destroy the target’s heart 186.
- Unlike Chain Jail, it is not limited to Phantom Troupe members 186.
- Kurapika intended to use it to force Tserriednich into lifelong repentance 186.
- Its restrictions can potentially be removed through Nen exorcism 186.
- Kurapika has placed one in his own heart to enforce Chain Jail’s limitation 186.
Dowsing Chain
Kurapika uses his ring-finger chain to detect lies during questioning. It also possesses guidance and tracking functions 165 177.
- Helps him assess suspects among the guards gathered in Room 12 177.
- Its findings can inform his decisions without constituting evidence admissible for prosecution 177.
Investigation and Negotiation
Kurapika combines close observation with political bargaining, using information about Nen beasts to secure access, truces, and protection 160 169 171.
- Recognizes legal traps that could expose his companions and the Hunter Association to punishment 171.
- Uses the promise of Nen instruction to establish contact with otherwise inaccessible factions 169 171.
- Monitors opponents’ expressions during combat to assess what they know about him 273.
- Helps maintain misleading accounts of his group’s powers. Claims that he can automatically identify Nen Beast abilities, provoke their attacks, or create communication devices are part of that deception, not confirmed independent abilities 169 175 183.
Other Nen Techniques
- Ken: Uses Ken during the confrontation in Tserriednich’s quarters 185.
- En: Can use En, but does not specialize in it 268.
- Aura defense: Uses Nen alongside a gas mask to resist the encroaching black aura 316.
