Background / History

Service under Tobirama Senju

Danzō belonged to Hiruzen Sarutobi’s generation and served as a guard to the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. He later believed that his own hesitation had cost him the opportunity to become Third Hokage, leaving him one step behind Hiruzen 188 189.

As Root’s leader, he built an organization so tightly controlled that even Hiruzen had few agents inside it. He also sought influence over the Council of Elders, whose collective decisions could override some Hokage decisions 4 9.

Hatake Sakumo’s downfall

Danzō orchestrated the public hostility that drove Hatake Sakumo to suicide after Sakumo abandoned a mission to protect his teammates. Hiruzen knew about the scheme and supported it from behind the scenes because Sakumo’s prestige threatened his position 190 191.

After Sakumo’s death, Danzō demanded custody of Kakashi Hatake, arguing that the surviving Hatake family might rebel. When Hiruzen refused, he requested Sōkyū instead. His interest extended beyond their abilities: controlling the Hatake Clan’s heir would give him another source of support on the Council of Elders 4 9.

Attempts to recruit Sōkyū

Danzō arranged for Kakashi to leave on a mission and occupied Orochimaru with experimental material before approaching Sōkyū himself. At Hokage Rock, he praised Sakumo and falsely claimed that Sakumo had belonged to Root, hoping to lure Sōkyū into the organization and place restrictions on him 9 12.

Sōkyū stalled until Orochimaru arrived to take him away. Seeing Sōkyū use the chakra-free movement technique Soru increased Danzō’s interest: he wanted to use it to strengthen Root’s operatives 13.

His subsequent attempt to seize Sōkyū through two Chūnin-level Root agents ended with both agents dead. Hiruzen rejected Danzō’s suspicions against the four-year-old and ordered him to stay away 20 21 22.

Kumogakure expedition

After the failed abduction, Danzō resolved to inflame tensions with Kumogakure, win battlefield glory, and force Hiruzen out of office. His interference helped turn the dispute into open war at the end of Konoha Year 41 22 23.

He volunteered to lead a thousand ninja and insisted that at least ten Uchiha accompany him. Privately, he planned to kill Uchiha fighters, blame Kumogakure, and use their bodies to draw Orochimaru more deeply into their research partnership. Orochimaru declined to join the expedition 23 24.

A later emergency dispatch reported Danzō severely injured, nearly a hundred casualties, and the appearance of the Two-Tails jinchūriki. Koharu and Homura supported replacing him with Jiraiya 38.

Root exposure and suspension

The capture of Nara Rokuten exposed Danzō’s infiltration of the Ino-Shika-Chō clans. Rokuten had served him for three years, supplied intelligence about Orochimaru, and passed information about Sōkyū to Sunagakure. Root’s sealed memories prevented investigators from immediately determining the reason for that disclosure 99 103 106.

Hiruzen demanded the withdrawal of agents near Sōkyū and a list of Danzō’s operatives within the three clans. After learning that Sōkyū had signed a Council voting agreement with Hiruzen, Danzō ordered Root to locate and steal it 106 107.

Aburame Ryoma’s infiltration of the Hokage Office failed to recover the agreement. His later ambush of Sōkyū also failed, costing him his life. Dead Kikaichū connected Ryoma to the office intrusion, although Danzō continued denying responsibility 110 112 113 114.

Hiruzen suspended Danzō as Hokage Advisor, prohibited him from going out, and required Root’s external operations to be reported to the Hokage. Danzō retained limited personnel authority within Konoha 114 115.

Reinstatement

Danzō regained his former position and responsibilities after approximately a year and a half. The official explanation cited mounting border pressure while Hiruzen was personally at the battlefield; Sōkyū interpreted the decision as a need for Danzō to manage covert affairs in the village 130.

He subsequently participated in approving Sōkyū’s Jōnin promotion while questioning him about Ryoma’s disappearance. Later, following reports of Sōkyū’s death, he refused Orochimaru’s demand for action and threatened to treat an unauthorized departure as betrayal. Tsunade’s decision to accompany Orochimaru undermined his plan to exploit the situation politically 147 166 167.

Fourth Hokage election

Danzō became one of the three leading candidates for Fourth Hokage alongside Orochimaru and Minato Namikaze, though his support lagged behind theirs. During the public election, he arranged for an Anbu operative to expose Orochimaru’s human experimentation and ordered Root to arrest him 188 189.

Orochimaru countered with a Tone Dial recording of Danzō assigning the research, supplying Hashirama’s cells, and promising to legalize future experiments. The recordings also implicated him in research into the Sharingan and Byakugan 190.

Sōkyū then exposed Danzō’s prosthetic arm. After destroying twelve Root attackers, he tore open Danzō’s upper clothing, revealing Hashirama’s cells and two three-tomoe Sharingan. The revelation destroyed Danzō’s electoral prospects, and he ordered more than a hundred Root operatives to attack Sōkyū 192 193.

Final battle and death

Danzō fought alongside Hiruzen, Koharu, and Homura against Sōkyū. Jiraiya intervened to protect the four from incoming attacks, after which Hiruzen promised to remove Danzō from the election and investigate him 195 196 197.

Sōkyū instead detained Danzō in a lightning prison. Danzō broke free and attacked, but Sōkyū’s two-billion-volt Thunder God dispersed his Wind Release and seized him. Repeated electrical attacks left him motionless; he then used Izanagi to negate his death and reappeared behind Sōkyū 198 199.

Danzō activated the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, intending to kill Sōkyū while preserving himself through his remaining Sharingan. Sōkyū revealed that he had already destroyed that eye. Danzō begged Hiruzen to stop him, but Hiruzen chose to sacrifice him rather than interrupt the attempt 199 200.

After Sōkyū resisted the seal with Armament Haki, Danzō embraced him in a final effort to complete the sealing. Both vanished when the technique reached its limit; the later account explicitly confirms that Sōkyū killed Danzō 200 243.

Aftermath

Minato consolidated the former Root after becoming Fourth Hokage. Members who could be integrated joined the Anbu, while the others were handed to Uchiha Fugaku for reform 243.

Danzō’s death remained central to Hiruzen’s resentment. Hiruzen later declared that he wanted to create a world with Danzō in it and invoked his killing while accusing Minato’s administration of betraying Konoha. Tobirama reacted angrily when Hiruzen presented an embellished account of his former disciple’s death 248 249.

Appearance

  • Cane: Regularly leans on a cane and strikes it against the floor during confrontations 4 106.
  • Concealed right arm: Keeps his prosthetic beneath his clothing; its different coloration becomes apparent when Sōkyū exposes it 192 193.
  • Transplanted eyes: The prosthetic bears two three-tomoe Sharingan at the time of the Fourth Hokage election 192 193.

Personality

Danzō sees himself as the leader capable of making Konoha stronger and treats Hiruzen’s restraint as weakness. Being overruled intensifies his desire for the Hokage’s authority, and he repeatedly frames personal power grabs as necessary for the village’s future 8 22 107 189.

His recruitment methods combine false sympathy, fabricated promises, surveillance, and coercion. He praises Sakumo to Sōkyū despite having engineered Sakumo’s downfall, invents a history of Sakumo’s service in Root, and plans to turn Sōkyū into a controlled political proxy 12 13.

He consistently denies involvement when confronted with evidence. He also distrusts the Uchiha as inherently unpredictable, a prejudice compared directly with Tobirama’s 12 106 114 190.

His final confrontation exposes the limits of his willingness to sacrifice himself. He confidently activates a lethal seal while expecting Izanagi to save him, but panics and begs for intervention once that safeguard is gone 200.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

Danzō uses offensive Wind Release in direct combat.

  • Vacuum Wave: A B-rank technique used at close range to stop Sōkyū from exposing his arm. Sōkyū shatters it with an Armament Haki-coated hand 193.
  • Wind-Blowing Heavy Rain: Launches a large wind sphere after escaping the lightning prison. Sōkyū’s Thunder God disperses it 198.

Izanagi

Danzō can use the Uchiha forbidden ocular technique through his transplanted Sharingan.

  • Negates his apparent death from Sōkyū’s lightning attacks, allowing him to reappear unharmed 199.
  • Permanently blinds the Sharingan used to activate it 199.
  • His intended second use fails because Sōkyū has already destroyed the remaining eye 200.

Reverse Four Symbols Seal

A lethal sealing technique prepared through a mark inscribed on the caster’s body.

  • Releases blood to form an expanding sphere that seals surrounding matter with the caster 199.
  • Draws in Sōkyū’s lightning during Danzō’s final attack 199 200.
  • Fails to pull Sōkyū toward him once Sōkyū activates Armament Haki; Danzō then attempts direct physical contact 200.
  • Danzō expects to survive its cost through Izanagi rather than through the seal itself 200.

Physical Power

  • Breaks out of Sōkyū’s lightning prison through a sudden burst of power 198.
  • Cannot overcome the Thunder God that subsequently restrains and electrocutes him 198 199.

Intelligence and Political Manipulation

Danzō’s operations extend beyond Root into Konoha’s other institutions.

  • Plants agents within the Anbu and Ino-Shika-Chō clans 103 106 193.
  • Uses surveillance reports to track Sōkyū’s routine and arrange approaches while his protectors are occupied 9 11.
  • Manipulates public opinion through rumors and staged disclosures, including the campaigns against Sakumo and Orochimaru 190 191.
  • Keeps research assignments verbal to avoid written evidence, a precaution defeated by Orochimaru’s Tone Dial recording 190.
