Background and History
Sokovian Childhood
Wanda grew up in Sokovia with Pietro. Their parents died because of a Stark Industries shell, leaving the siblings dependent on one another and shaping Wanda’s early hatred of Tony Stark. By the time she chooses to study magic, both siblings have forgiven him 79 289.
Thor later resurrects Olek and Iryna. Wanda and Pietro reunite with them at their childhood home, which Tony has purchased and restored to match their memories. Wanda breaks down in tears when Iryna embraces her 182.
Joining the Avengers and Choosing Magic
Wanda and Pietro have already joined the Avengers when Thor meets them, before Ultron’s expected emergence. Thor identifies her power as Chaos Magic and explains that Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme wants him to help her control it 62 63.
Thor then shows the Avengers possible futures. Seeing Pietro’s death nearly triggers an uncontrolled surge of Wanda’s magic, which Thor suppresses through mental guidance. Further visions show Vision’s deaths and versions of Wanda committing atrocities in pursuit of a magically created family. Frightened by these possibilities, she resolves to master her power rather than repeat them 71 72 79.
At Kamar-Taj, the Ancient One offers complete instruction on the condition that Wanda eventually take her place. Wanda accepts, beginning with a punishing lesson against countless duplicates wielding golden whips 79 80.
Defender of Earth
Wanda becomes one of the Avengers’ strongest combatants. During their confrontation with the Eternals, she seals the powers of all ten at once. Against Arishem, she combines Chaos Magic with the Reality Stone to protect Earth, repair her barrier, and heal injured teammates. She holds out for several minutes before Arishem breaks through and knocks her unconscious 106 107.
After awakening, she strips Carol Danvers of her photon energy, allowing Natasha to restrain her. Wanda subsequently assumes the office of Sorcerer Supreme, though the responsibility initially overwhelms her. Thor reassures her and recommends delegating routine duties to Strange 110 115.
When five dimensional demon gods threaten reality, Wanda maintains Kamar-Taj’s barrier while Thor confronts them. Her stated limit at this point remains Highfather Level; Thor considers fighting all five alone beyond her capabilities 125 127.
Chthon’s Abduction and the Zombie Universes
Chthon abducts Wanda during meditation, pulling her out of reality through a dimensional passage. She lands in a devastated universe, where she encounters zombie heroes and meets Felicia Hardy. Unable to open a portal home through the reinforced dimensional boundary, she cooperates with Felicia and shelters in an underground S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house 131 132 133 134.
Thor locates her and explains that the Hunger Virus outbreak is trapped in a repeating cycle. Wanda later protects him from super-powered zombies by drawing them into the Mirror Dimension while he remains outside. During the expedition, she also meets Lorna, whose own sister was an infected Wanda, and reassures her with the false claim that Lorna is alive in Wanda’s home universe 136 137 140 142.
In another zombie universe, Wanda volunteers to confront a Darkhold-empowered counterpart hunting America Chavez. Their Mirror Dimension battle lasts an hour because Wanda attempts to separate her counterpart’s soul from the book rather than simply kill her. The bond proves inseparable; Wanda seals the Darkhold, bringing her counterpart peace, and hands the book to Thor 155 157 158.
Thor and Frost City
After the zombie-universe conflict, Thor takes Wanda sightseeing. They share goulash in Budapest that reminds her of childhood, visit several natural landmarks, explore beneath the sea, and depart to tour the Nine Realms 159 160.
Their relationship later becomes explicitly romantic. Wanda thanks Thor for restoring her parents and acknowledges his relationships with Emma Frost, Betsy, Madelyne, and others. Rather than demand exclusivity, she asks for a lasting place in his heart. After using Chaos Magic to verify his sincerity, she proposes that they try to have a child despite his warning that conception may be difficult 289.
Wanda continues responding to threats beyond Frost City. She senses danger on her Earth across dimensions and returns with Thor to investigate. She also helps Madelyne, Emma, and Betsy seal Sentry’s Void personality 293 393.
Battles Against Mephisto’s Forces
When Mephisto attacks with a controlled Scarlet Witch, Wanda intervenes to free Jean Grey and confront her counterpart. She defeats and cages that Wanda, then blasts Mephisto away before engaging Onslaught 434 436.
Onslaught and Apocalypse attack her together. After they destroy her rule-altering runic array, she switches tactics and overwhelms them with a Chaos Magic domain. The arrival of two Void-controlled Sentries forces her onto the defensive; she activates an ancient World Tree seal to signal for help 437 438.
Classic Loki’s arrival eases the pressure. Wanda later joins him and Doctor Strange Supreme in restraining the remaining Void Sentry as Mephisto announces that the surrounding universe is being erased 440.
Appearance
- Hair: Long brown hair, described as brownish-yellow at her early Avengers appearance 62 144 289.
- Eyes: Green in ordinary scenes; crimson or scarlet during several magical encounters 152 155 159 289.
- Early clothing: A red jacket, later specified as a red leather jacket 62 79.
- Sorcerer Supreme attire: Scarlet mage’s robes and the Eye of Agamotto 106 115.
- Combat transformation: Can manifest a scarlet crown and reshape an ordinary black coat into a floor-length dark red robe. Both transformations recede after battle 157 158.
Personality
Wanda is direct when she wants answers and determined to prevent the tragedies she has seen in alternate futures. Her decision to train at Kamar-Taj comes from fear of harming others, not a desire for greater status 79 144.
She remains compassionate toward dangerous counterparts. Against Zombie Wanda, she condemns the killing of innocents but spends an hour seeking a way to separate the woman’s soul from the Darkhold 157 158.
Family and emotional security matter deeply to her. She worries about Pietro, is overwhelmed by her reunion with her parents, and fears becoming like alternate Wandas consumed by grief. With Thor, she asks for reassurance that she will not be abandoned rather than insisting that he love only her 115 182 289.
Despite her insecurity about leadership, she is steadfast under pressure. While shielding Earth from Arishem, she continues repairing the barrier and healing allies even as she bleeds and nearly exhausts her magic 107.
Abilities and Skills
Chaos Magic and Reality Alteration
Wanda hosts Chaos Magic, a reality-rewriting power created by Chthon. Odin recognizes its potential to overturn the multiverse, but that potential exceeds Wanda’s early demonstrated strength 24 63 67.
- Reality rewriting: Can alter physical conditions and restructure the battlefield’s rules 201 437.
- Power suppression: Seals all ten Eternals’ abilities and extracts Carol Danvers’ photon energy 106 110.
- Resistance to absorption: Onslaught cannot absorb her magic as a mutant ability because it is not derived from the X-Gene 436.
- Truth detection: Uses Chaos Magic to confirm that Thor’s assurances are sincere 289.
Defensive Magic and Healing
- Automatic shielding: Her magic reacts to an incoming zombie Spider-Man web before she consciously responds 132.
- Mental and material protection: Blocks Onslaught’s psychic attack and neutralizes Apocalypse’s matter-destroying energy 437.
- Large-scale barriers: Temporarily protects Earth from Arishem when enhanced by the Reality Stone 107.
- Healing: Uses the Reality Stone to treat teammates while maintaining her defensive barrier 107.
- Limits: Arishem eventually overcomes her defense; the effort nearly exhausts her magic 107.
Kamar-Taj Sorcery
Wanda combines Chaos Magic with formal sorcery and the power of the Vishanti. Unlike ordinary sorcerers who generally borrow magical power, she possesses a source of her own 80 140.
| Spell / Technique | Demonstrated Use |
|---|---|
| Mirror Dimension | Isolates super-powered zombies and later draws Zombie Wanda into a separate battlefield 140 157. |
| Shield of the Seraphim | Absorbs Zombie Wanda’s opening attack 157. |
| Winds of Watoomb | Produces a scarlet hurricane that cuts into her opponent’s clothing 157. |
| Crimson Bands of Cyttorak | Summons six rune-covered chains targeting limbs, neck, and waist 157. |
| Bolts of Balthakk | Adds ranged strikes to her continuous magical barrage 157. |
| Sword of Vishanti | Attacks Zombie Wanda from the flank 157. |
| Binding Circle of Ikonn | Restricts Zombie Wanda’s movement 157. |
Sealing and Battlefield Control
- Darkhold sealing: Suppresses the book with scarlet runes running across its cover and spine 158.
- Runic imprisonment: Confines Mephisto’s controlled Scarlet Witch in a floating magical cage 436.
- Rule-altering arrays: Slows opponents’ access to their energy by changing the surrounding space; Onslaught and Apocalypse destroy the array before it is completed 437.
- Chaos Magic domain: Engulfs the battlefield in scarlet magic and attacks with energy tentacles, pressuring both enemies simultaneously 437.
- Collective containment: Helps seal the Void and later restrains a Void Sentry alongside Classic Loki and Doctor Strange Supreme 393 440.
Sensing, Concealment, and Mobility
- Environmental sensing: Searches hundreds of meters for living people and detects approaching Chaos Magic 132 157.
- Perception barrier: Prevents sight, hearing, and smell from locking onto herself and Felicia; it redirects perception rather than bending light or creating illusions 134.
- Cross-dimensional warning: Senses a dangerous disturbance on her Earth while visiting Frost City 293.
- Flight: Uses Chaos Magic to levitate and travel above zombie-infested streets 80 132.
- Portal limitation: Still requires a Sling Ring to cast portals during the New Asgard expedition 157.
Equipment and Items
- Eye of Agamotto: Received upon becoming Sorcerer Supreme. Thor modifies its original single-stone setting to accommodate both the Time Stone and Reality Stone 115 134.
- Reality Stone: Enhances her barriers, healing, and ability to counter hostile laws during Arishem’s attack 107.
- Time Stone: Kept under her protection. It responds more weakly and sluggishly in the zombie universe than in her own 134.
- Sling Ring: Required for her portal casting at the time of her battle with Zombie Wanda 157.
- World Tree seal: An ancient seal bearing the World Tree’s emblem; Wanda crushes it to send a distress signal during the Void Sentry battle 437 438.
- Darkhold — temporarily held: Sealed after defeating Zombie Wanda, then handed to Thor for storage 158.
Relationships
- Thor — Magical guide, trusted protector, and eventual romantic partner. Helps her find training, rescues her, restores her parents, and reassures her about their relationship 64 79 137 182 289.
- Pietro Maximoff — Brother and childhood companion. She is deeply distressed by visions of his possible death and later complains about his partying with Tony 71 115.
- Olek and Iryna — Parents. Their deaths shape her childhood; Thor’s resurrection allows the family to reunite 182 289.
- Ancient One — Teacher and predecessor as Sorcerer Supreme. Trains Wanda in magical combat and disciplined observation 79 80 132.
- Tony Stark — Former object of resentment who becomes an Avengers ally. Helps restore her childhood home 79 182.
- Stephen Strange and Wong — Fellow Kamar-Taj sorcerers. Thor suggests delegating routine responsibilities to Strange; Wong identifies Chthon’s role in her disappearance 115 131.
- Felicia Hardy — Survivor and ally in the zombie universe. Provides local intelligence and leads Wanda to a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house 133 134.
- Chthon — Creator of Chaos Magic and a threat seeking to use Wanda as his host. Exploits their connection to abduct her 63 131 144.

| Omniverse Level | 467 | The Queen of Nevers frees Wanda’s multiversal incarnations from predestined tragedy. Earth-616 Wanda undergoes the greatest transformation, becoming a living source of Chaos. |
