Background / History

Tang San retains memories of a previous life and possesses the Tang Sect Secret Arts. He relies on hidden weapons, movement techniques, and internal force alongside his Martial Soul abilities 13 17.

His father, Tang Hao, secretly protects him. Tang San is also Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and takes considerable pride in his teacher’s reputation as an authority on Martial Soul theory 8 28.

Appearance

  • Ordinary looks: Initially described as utterly ordinary-looking; his later Soul Fight with Ma Hongjun attracts fewer than fifty spectators, with neither contestant considered particularly good-looking 1 13.
  • Illness and blood loss: Following his admission test and attempted treatment, he develops a sallow complexion, cracked lips, sunken eyes, and a weak, limping gait 8.
  • Battle injuries: After defeating the Man Faced Demon Spider, he is covered in wounds, blood, and sweat, with his clothing torn to rags 26.

Personality

Tang San is conscious of his image, particularly around Xiao Wu. He rejects the option of throwing a sausage in Oscar’s face because he considers it unbecoming, initially questions whether bypassing entrance examinations is proper, and later sends Xiao Wu away rather than let her watch him suffer 2 4.

His confidence in his Tang Sect techniques makes him willing to accept Ma Hongjun’s proposal to fight without Martial Souls. He also repeatedly accepts immediate pain for a system reward, first for Plate Crystal and later for physical reinforcement 2 13.

Pride and resentment shape his responses to humiliation. He threatens opponents after embarrassing defeats, becomes furious when Xiao Jue dismisses hidden weapons, and resents Xiao Jue receiving admiration from Xiao Wu 9 14 23 24. His loyalty to Yu Xiaogang is equally forceful: he defends his teacher against criticism and insists that his training cannot be wrong, even while it aggravates his injuries 29 30 31.

Abilities & Skills

God-Level Choice System

Tang San’s system presents choices with specified rewards and possible side effects. Some options offer system points redeemable in a shop, while others grant money, materials, or bodily improvements 2 13.

Completed Choice Reward Consequence
Eat Oscar’s sausage in one bite One piece of Plate Crystal, deposited in system space Random localized swelling and pain manifests as hemorrhoids 2.
Remain motionless against Ma Hongjun’s attack Strengthening of the first body part to make contact His head is slightly strengthened, but he still suffers the impact and is knocked down 13 14.
  • Rewards do not remove ordinary danger: The supposedly side-effect-free reinforcement choice still requires him to endure Ma Hongjun’s attack 13 14.
  • Risk assessment: He rejects an option involving Mysterious Jade Hand because its side effect would shorten a random body part by one centimetre 13.

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses two Martial Souls, a fact Yu Xiaogang considers a decisive advantage when anticipating a fight against Xiao Jue’s trainees 29.

  • Blue Silver Entanglement: Sends strands of Blue Silver Grass from the ground to catch an opponent’s feet 3.
  • Parasite: His second Soul Skill causes vines to grow and tighten around Zhao Wuji after the initial grass is broken 3.
  • Limitations: Zhao Wuji snaps the initial restraints through physical force 3.

Tang Sect Secret Arts

Tang San considers his hidden weapons, movement techniques, and internal force sufficient to defeat Ma Hongjun without using his Martial Souls 13.

  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Evasive footwork used to dodge Zhao Wuji’s Great Strength Vajra Palm and rapidly approach Ma Hongjun 3 9.
  • Heavenly Flower Rain: Launches multiple kinds of hidden weapons along straight, angled, and circling trajectories toward a single opponent 3.
  • Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: Used to strike the back of Ma Hongjun’s knee and force him to kneel. Tang San also intends to use it to catch a falling dish, but pain interrupts him 14 20.
  • Mysterious Jade Hand: Named as an available method for catching Ma Hongjun, though Tang San chooses not to use it in that exchange 13.

Smithing

  • Experience: Has spent years smithing; the one hundred Gold Soul Coins charged by Mr. Zhi roughly equal his accumulated savings from that work 6.
  • Hidden-weapon materials: Recognizes Plate Crystal as material for making Dragon Whisker Needles and selects a system reward specifically to obtain it 2.
  • Restricted movement: His hemorrhoids make walking, running, turning, and evasive footwork painful 2 3 18.
  • Interrupted techniques: Pain stops him from catching a falling dish with Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon 20.
  • Recurring bleeding: Zhao Wuji’s blow, Ma Hongjun’s weight, and weighted training each worsen his condition or reopen wounds 3 9 31.
  • Unsuccessful initial treatment: Oscar’s restorative and detoxifying sausages do not visibly resolve his condition; Tang San leaves to seek treatment in Suotuo City 4.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Worn at his waist; Tang San draws his hidden weapons from it during the entrance examination 3.
  • Hidden weapons — Carries Willow Leaf Blades, Flying Locust Stones, Coin Darts, Bone-Piercing Nails, and other projectiles. Later embeds several darts in Ma Hongjun’s backside during their Soul Fight 3 14.
  • Plate Crystal — Obtained through the God-Level Choice System and placed in system space. Tang San intends to use it to make Dragon Whisker Needles; their manufacture is not shown 2.
  • Durian — Mistaken for Mr. Zhi’s medicine because the actual pill bottle is hidden behind it. His attempted use leaves puncture wounds and causes a damaging misunderstanding with Xiao Wu 6 9.
  • Eight Spider Lances — not acquired — The Man Faced Demon Spider’s External Soul Bone is taken by Xiao Jue’s system while Tang San absorbs the Soul Ring. It is converted into Sin Wings Fallen Heaven for Xiao Jue 26.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father and secret protector. After seeing Tang San injured by Zhao Wuji, he confronts Zhao Wuji that night 8.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Tang San proudly identifies with his reputation, defends him against Xiao Jue, and follows his weighted-running regimen despite severe pain 28 29 30.
  • Xiao Wu — Close companion who calls him “Brother” and “Third Brother” and has entrusted her money to him. Their relationship deteriorates after the durian incident; she refuses to form a two-person team with him, although he later pursues the Titan Giant Ape to rescue her 2 7 14 26.
  • Xiao Jue — Rival and the source of several concealed setbacks. Xiao Jue sabotages his Soul Fight and takes the spider’s External Soul Bone; Tang San openly resents his dismissal of hidden weapons and growing influence over Xiao Wu 14 23 24 26.
  • Dai Mubai — Academy senior who helps him bypass preliminary tests, assists him after Zhao Wuji’s examination, and separates him from Ma Hongjun during their first fight 2 3 9.
  • Oscar — Roommate and teammate. Tries to treat him with sausages, temporarily avoids their room after the durian misunderstanding, and later pressures Tang San into carrying him during the forest journey 4 7 18.
  • Ma Hongjun — Teammate and recurring opponent. Their first encounter becomes a fight, and their later Soul Fight ends with Tang San being kicked out of the arena 9 14.
  • Zhao Wuji — Entrance examiner whose attack severely aggravates Tang San’s hemorrhoids. Nevertheless grants him a pass before the examination’s allotted time expires 3.
  • Qian Renxue — Encounters him in a system simulation in which she falls in love with him and is pierced by his Guanyin’s Tears. She questions whether the simulation depicts the future; these events are not established as present-day encounters 29.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shrek Admission and System Side Effect

At Oscar’s stall, Tang San receives a choice between eating a sausage, throwing it at Oscar, or declining it. He chooses to eat it for Plate Crystal, accepting what sounds like a minor side effect. The resulting hemorrhoids immediately make walking painful 1 2.

During Zhao Wuji’s entrance test, he restrains the examiner with Blue Silver Grass, dodges attacks, and unleashes hidden weapons. His pain repeatedly interrupts his movement. Zhao Wuji mistakes his gestures for mockery, pulls him in with Gravity Crush, and strikes his lower back, causing severe bleeding. Zhao Wuji then counts the examination as passed 3.

Clinic Visit and Durian Misunderstanding

After the sausages fail to resolve his pain, Tang San visits Heaven Dou’s Number One Hemorrhoid Clinic in Suotuo City. Mr. Zhi calls his condition “Extreme Yin Soul-Devouring Hemorrhoids” and offers a remedy said to suppress it for one month. Tang San pays one hundred Gold Soul Coins but mistakes a durian for the medicine 4 5 6.

Xiao Wu, Dai Mubai, and Oscar enter his dormitory while he is preparing the treatment. Xiao Wu interprets the scene as sexual behaviour and leaves in distress, while the others laugh at his explanation. The following morning, pressure from Ma Hongjun’s attack tears open the durian wounds 6 7 9.

Soul Fight Against Ma Hongjun

Tang San agrees to fight Ma Hongjun without Martial Souls, trusting his Tang Sect arts. He then deliberately withstands Crow Takes Flight to obtain a system reward, gaining slight head reinforcement 13 14.

After retaliating with darts and forcing Ma Hongjun to one knee, Tang San prepares a potentially decisive strike. Xiao Jue secretly surrounds him with flies, distracting him long enough for Ma Hongjun to use Monkey Steals the Peach and Elephant Kick to knock him from the arena. Afterward, Xiao Wu refuses Tang San’s invitation to register as a two-person team 14.

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

Denied a place in Xiao Jue’s carriage, Tang San runs toward the forest with the other male students. Ning Rongrong and Oscar invoke his duty to his teammates, leaving him to carry Oscar despite his worsening condition 18.

He later offers to fight Meng Yiran for Oscar’s disputed Soul Ring opportunity, but Xiao Jue takes the match. Tang San becomes furious when Xiao Jue wins, dismisses hidden weapons, and receives Xiao Wu’s admiration 22 23 24.

When the Titan Giant Ape carries Xiao Wu away, Tang San gives chase. He encounters and defeats the Man Faced Demon Spider, reaches level 30, and begins absorbing its Soul Ring. During the absorption, Xiao Jue takes the External Soul Bone from the corpse 26.

Yu Xiaogang’s Training

Following Yu Xiaogang’s arrival, Tang San defends his teacher against Xiao Jue’s criticism. He then leads the weighted run prescribed by Yu Xiaogang, refusing to use his condition as a reason to stop. The exertion stains his trousers with blood again, and he angrily rejects Dai Mubai’s concern 28 29 30 31.
