Background

Blake caught Ye Yan’s attention on a world ravaged by war. His silver infinity-shaped pendant and the strength of the Eternity he embodied distinguished him amid that planet’s suffering 90.

As Church Chair, Blake promotes the idea that believers with different ideals can still belong to one family. He describes the Church’s disputes over ideals and relationships as matters its members worked through hundreds of Amber Eras earlier. He also insists that there has never been a succession of Chairs: Blake Hale is the only person to have held the position 63 64 242.

Blake discovered a bottomless space left behind by one of Ye Yan’s old techniques and repurposed it as the Gift of Eternity, a repository for Stellarons and a place to banish supposed sinners. The grandiose designation was partly for effect; the Church had no sinners in the usual sense. He nevertheless once confined a priestess for half an Amber Era for wasting paper while drafting doctrine 47.

After an earlier clash with Fulisina, the two joined the Galaxy Rangers in fighting Lord Ravager Zulo 201.

Appearance

Blake usually appears as a blond young man in sharply divided black-and-white clerical clothing. His later unmasked appearance is described as stern and sharply defined 101 610.

  • Eyes: Described as blue in some appearances and green or emerald during his conversations with Sunday 101 285 383 412.
  • Clerical robes: Black on his left side and white on his right 101.
  • Infinity emblem: A silver-white, infinity-shaped cross or pendant on his chest 90 101.
  • Rings: Three differently shaped rings of authority adorn his slender fingers 63.
  • Holy light: Frequently illuminates himself with an invisible spotlight while speaking 63 115.
  • Later identifying mark: A small silver mark at the center of his forehead resembles a split stellar scar 610.
  • Flame Reaver form: A hooded black robe, a face concealed by darkness, white bone spurs, and ashen skeletal wings 612.

Personality

Blake’s devotion to Ye Yan is intense enough to overwhelm his composure. He once interpreted a closed milk tea shop as a personal rejection by his god, only to become ecstatic upon learning that Ye Yan simply worked fewer than two hours a day. Despite this fervor, he tries to protect Ye Yan’s concealed identity and behave appropriately before outsiders 60 63.

He favors theatrical presentation: holy spotlights, elaborate speeches, dramatic entrances, and an extravagantly staged collapse. During the fighting in Belobog, he used ketchup diluted with red juice to simulate fatal bleeding after deliberately blasting himself backward with soap 77 78 149.

His tolerance has a firm exception. Blake reassures believers that love, unusual preferences, and personal shortcomings are acceptable so long as they commit no crimes—but excludes Nanook and the Antimatter Legion. His hostility toward Destruction repeatedly overrides his otherwise conciliatory approach 43 51 412 420.

Blake says he is less fond of combat than Fulisina and considers constant killing dull and fleeting. He prefers conversation, recruitment, and negotiation where possible, though he readily applies intimidation or overwhelming force. His understanding of Eternity centers on the constancy of states and the preservation of value, including the happiness carried by memories and promises 176 285 383.

Abilities & Skills

Authority of Eternity

Blake is repeatedly identified as an Emanator of Eternity, with an Imaginary Energy signature detectable at Emanator level 63 69.

  • Planetary climate alteration: Illuminates Jarilo-VI with tens of thousands of beams and changes its climate within minutes 91.
  • Fragmentum removal: Clears the planet’s deeply rooted Fragmentum together with Fulisina 91.
  • Energy replenishment: Continually supplies Phantylia with energy during the counterattack against her, then stops shortly before her body explodes 150.
  • Holy-light attacks: Projects offensive rays of light, although these cannot break the barrier created by Aha 133.

Soap Conjuration and Weaponry

Soap is Blake’s signature weapon, supplied through Eternity and repeatedly conjured during combat 31 77.

  • Explosive bars: Can be prepared to detonate on impact or crushed for an immediate explosion 31 77.
  • Large-scale destructive power: Reportedly wipes out countless Voidranger: Tramplers; later descriptions state that even casually thrown soap can destroy a planet 31 353.
  • Interstellar transport: A bar of soap pulls him through space at a speed compared to an interstellar warp jump 168.
  • Emergency support: Throws a soap bomb toward Stelle after hearing her request for help; Fulisina adds a tracking spell 141.
  • Friendly-fire risk: That rescue attempt strikes and capsizes the boat carrying Stelle, Dan Heng, and March 7th 141.
  • Distribution: Gives soap to allies as a Church specialty, including versions explicitly usable as bombs 64 67 174.

Spatial and Temporal Manipulation

Blake uses Eternity to conceal himself, cross distances, and restrict opponents’ movement 66 67 479.

  • Portals: Opens a holy-light portal and offers to return Bronya to the Upper District 67.
  • Concealment: Hides his form when Bronya and Seele approach 66.
  • Time manipulation: Begins invoking “Time freeze” against Fragmentum Monsters before abandoning the action in response to Ye Yan’s expression 77.
  • Battlefield control: While disguised as the black-robed swordsman, demonstrates time stops, teleportation, and immobilization against Stelle 479.
  • Eternity spaces: The Church places hostile forces in enclosed Eternity spaces to make them reflect; Lygus’s extraordinary patience complicates this approach 419.

Perception and Mental Influence

Blake can recognize Path-related energies and exert influence without an obvious physical attack 89 412.

  • Path identification: Detects Eternity, Trailblaze, Preservation, Elation, Destruction, and two Stellarons within Stelle 89.
  • Distant appeals: Hears Stelle call for aid against a Lord Ravager 141.
  • Subtle influence: Lygus explicitly recognizes that Blake can affect his thinking. Silver Wolf similarly attributes an unnoticed change in her thoughts to him 77 412.
  • Memory intrusion: Examines Sunday’s memories, prompting Sunday to compare him to the Garden of Recollection’s memory thieves 241.
  • Rapid reconstruction: Experiences the events surrounding Khaslana from a third-person perspective and quickly understands the situation 466.
  • Resistance to covert observation: Detects Black Swan listening to a private conversation and confronts her 308.

Disguise and the Flame Reaver

Blake can reshape his appearance and suppress the outward signs of a role when its performance ends 440 610.

  • Physical transformation: Reshapes himself until he is indistinguishable from a black-robed swordsman 440.
  • Flame Reaver persona: Uses this identity to oppose the Chrysos Heirs and steal Core Flames as part of their preparation for Iron Tomb 612.
  • Protective shadows: Surrounds himself with darkness that blocks attacks, though Stelle’s Eternity-infused weapons can disrupt it 607 641.
  • Shadow sword: Fights Phainon and Stelle with a shadow longsword 641.
  • Maintained deception: Delays revealing himself because doing so would expose Amphoreus’s underlying truth before the Astral Express crew is prepared 494.

Combat and Limitations

  • Close-range strength: Catches Stelle’s imitation bat between two fingers and throws her away with an overwhelming burst of force 479.
  • Joint attacks: Kills the Abundance Ebon Deer with Fulisina in a single shot 135.
  • Improvised weapons: Uses a bound Sampo as both a shield and a weapon against Fragmentum Monsters 76 77.
  • Aeon-level barriers: Cannot damage Aha’s crimson barrier and acknowledges that additional Emanators would not solve the problem 133.
  • Vulnerability in battle: Phantylia knocks him away with her fan. Later, Stelle and Phainon’s combined assault exploits disruptions in his protective shadows 150 641.
  • Actual injury: An Eternity-infused blow forces the Flame Reaver backward and genuinely injures him, prompting Blake to consider retreat 624.

Church Administration and Diplomacy

  • Scriptural authorship: Writes the Book of Eternal Virtues, which is explicitly distinguished from the Eternity Creed 115.
  • Publicity: Handles the promotion that makes Fulisina’s exploits widely known 95.
  • Political protection: Negotiates Church backing for Jarilo-VI against IPC acquisition 177.
  • Coordinated operations: Organizes Robin, Boothill, Black Swan, Acheron, and the Astral Express crew against Sunday’s plan 277.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Scripture-covered soap — His preferred weapon, transport aid, diplomatic gift, and Church specialty 64 168 183 612.
  • Book of Eternal Virtues — His own religious text; he studies it, copies it, and presents a prepared copy to Ye Yan after being freed from Aha’s barrier 115 133 135 242.
  • Silver infinity pendant — The emblem associated with the Eternity that first drew Ye Yan’s attention 90.
  • Specially made glasses — Part of his approach to disguise: rather than disappear, he advocates showing an impressive version of oneself 64.
  • Church protection paper — Gives Bronya a document identifying Jarilo-VI as protected by Eternity 91.
  • Speaker — Carries one during his musical entrance into the battle against Phantylia 149.
  • Model Church star destroyer — A miniature vessel small enough to roll around in his hand while investigating Amphoreus 462.
  • Shadow longsword — Used while acting as the Flame Reaver 641.

Relationships

  • Ye Yan / Lord Yite — His god and the focus of his devotion. Blake protects Ye Yan’s secret identity, treasures his gifts, and treats even his milk tea with reverence 60 63 95 628.
  • Fulisina — Fellow Emanator, Church priest, longstanding rival, and operational partner. They compete for access to Ye Yan and insult one another, but cooperate closely in planetary restoration and Amphoreus’s trials 61 91 610 612.
  • Stelle — Prospective recruit whom Blake considers a possible successor after recognizing that her hourglass shares its origin with his soap. They later fight while he conceals himself as the Flame Reaver 89 641.
  • Astral Express crew — Regards Eternity and Trailblaze as one family and repeatedly assists their expeditions, although his methods sometimes cause trouble 67 141 310.
  • Sampo Koski — Frequent target of Blake’s soap attacks and humiliating combat improvisations; Blake binds and uses him as a shield 31 77.
  • Silver Wolf — Captures her despite her attempts to hide, then releases her with an invitation to visit the Church. She holds a lasting grudge 74 77 91 92.
  • Bronya and Belobog — Extends Church protection to their world and later helps prevent its acquisition by the IPC 91 177.
  • Acting Priest — Church subordinate who manages its responsibilities during his absences; Blake leaves those duties to her when taking a vacation 51 168.
  • Screwllum — The Church’s sole deacon, who impersonates Blake. Stelle exposes the imitation because it lacks Blake’s habitual holy spotlight 115.
  • Sunday — Ideological opponent and recruitment target. Blake challenges his reliance on Order and offers Eternity as another way to preserve his shared dream with Robin 242 285 383.
  • Black Swan — A Memokeeper whose investigation of Eternity brings severe consequences; Blake repeatedly objects to her intrusion into private memories and conversations 232 308.
  • Lygus — Attempts to recruit him before rejecting negotiations over his involvement with Destruction and the creation of a Lord Ravager 412 419 420.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Reports and the Church

An interastral broadcast credits Bishop Blake with apprehending a History Fictionologist and correcting the rumor that Ye Yan’s trash-can disguise was an Aeon’s true form. Dan Heng also reports Blake’s appearance aboard the Mourning Actors’ ship and his ability to conceal his presence and move at high speed 20.

In Boulder Town, Blake reassures cleric Lante that his attraction to a portrait does not make him a traitor to the Church. Elsewhere, intelligence concerning Destruction’s activity around the Xianzhou Luofu prompts Blake to prepare an expedition in accordance with the creed’s eighth article: “Kill the Antimatter Legion... beat up Destruction” 43 51.

Jarilo-VI’s Restoration

Blake and Fulisina board the Astral Express seeking Ye Yan and learn that he is on Jarilo-VI. Blake then decides to eliminate the planet’s Fragmentum Monsters as a gift for him, offers assistance to Bronya and Seele, and joins Dan Heng on the front lines 63 64 66 67 77.

When Ye Yan arrives, Blake interprets his expression as a cue to withdraw from the coming confrontation. He stages a dramatic collapse, successfully deceiving several onlookers. Later, he objects to concealing the full truth of Cocolia’s actions merely to preserve public hope 77 78 90.

After the crisis, Blake changes Jarilo-VI’s climate, removes its Fragmentum with Fulisina, and publicly proclaims Eternity’s protection. He joins Bronya’s ceremony and asks her to spread word of the Church 91.

Xianzhou Luofu Crisis

While investigating the revived Ambrosial Arbor, Blake and Fulisina are trapped behind Aha’s barrier. Ye Yan breaks it, exposing his identity as the Aeon of Eternity to the Astral Express crew. The two Emanators subsequently destroy the Abundance Ebon Deer 132 133 135.

Blake’s attempt to answer Stelle’s distress call accidentally capsizes her boat. During the eventual confrontation with Phantylia, his grand entrance ends with him being knocked away, but he returns to help the group turn the battle against her. Phantylia ultimately abandons her body and escapes 141 149 150.

Jarilo-VI and the IPC

Blake returns to Jarilo-VI for its festival, leaving Church business to the Acting Priest. When the IPC’s acquisition plans threaten Belobog, he supplies strategic soap and confronts Topaz 168 174 176.

He agrees to cooperate specifically with the Strategic Investment Department, not the IPC as a whole, and warns that continued pressure could mean war with the Church. Fulisina proposes guaranteeing the planet through the Church’s reputation. The executives abandon the acquisition after learning that Blake has also obtained Yite’s agreement to provide an item belonging to Qlipoth as compensation 177.

Penacony and Sunday

In Penacony, Blake challenges The Family’s surveillance of Church members, offers support to Robin and vulnerable children, and repeatedly tries to recruit Sunday. His argument emphasizes that Eternity respects individual choices rather than imposing a protective cage 232 242 252.

He helps organize the counteroperation against Sunday’s attempt to restore Order by merging dream and reality. Robin is to awaken dreamers through Harmony’s song, while Boothill receives soap for a disruptive “art exhibition” 277.

After Sunday’s defeat, Blake speaks with him in the Church infirmary rather than treating him as a condemned prisoner. He later frames his offer as a transaction: Sunday must relinquish his attachment to his old faith in exchange for the possibility of defining eternal peace through Eternity 285 383.

Amphoreus and the Flame Reaver

Blake and Black Swan ask the Astral Express to travel to Amphoreus, citing its dangerous remnants of Destruction and concealed memories. A later memory reveals Blake confronting Lygus about the world’s connection to a Scepter and the cultivation of a Lord Ravager 310 412.

Blake assumes the appearance of the black-robed swordsman and takes up the Flame Reaver’s role. He deliberately keeps the truth from the Astral Express crew, believing they must be prepared before confronting Iron Tomb 440 479 494.

His theft of Core Flames and battles against the Chrysos Heirs are intended to sharpen Amphoreus’s rising heroes and advance the Flame-Chase. Despite the staged purpose, the fighting becomes dangerous: Stelle’s Eternity-infused attacks disrupt his defenses, and Phainon exploits the resulting openings 612 624 641.

Trivia

  • Himeko’s coffee defeats his composure: Blake nearly spits it out but continues praising it to remain polite. Fulisina later uses his dislike of the drink to question his qualifications as Chair 63 135.
  • Milk tea becomes a sacred keepsake: He enshrines a cup bestowed by Ye Yan. Later, he abandons the Flame Reaver’s act long enough to catch milk tea thrown by March 7th, making it appear that the drink extinguished his black flames 95 628.
  • His spotlight exposes an impersonator: Stelle recognizes that Screwllum is not the real Blake because the disguise lacks his signature holy-light effect 115.
  • Black Swan’s perception creates an identity ambiguity: Although Blake is repeatedly called an Emanator, her investigation of Eternity culminates in the realization that she has touched an Aeon. The supplied account does not explain the discrepancy 63 232 353.
