Background & History

Before his fall, Sargeras served as the Pantheon's foremost warrior. He traveled between worlds aboard a vast mothership, purging Twisting Nether demons and searching ordered planets for unborn world-souls. He created the extradimensional Mardum plane to imprison demons, recognizing that simply killing them only allowed them to resurrect in the Twisting Nether. 688 689

While investigating a demon-controlled ordered world, Sargeras encountered Roy, then known as Osiris. Roy led him to a devastated star system and showed him an Old God, warning that intelligent Void Lords were transforming the Void's passive corrosion into an active threat against the material universe. Sargeras initially distrusted him, but later spent more than twenty years finding nearly a hundred Old Gods and witnessing the destruction they caused. 692 693 696

Sargeras eventually entered the Void with Roy to investigate the Void Lords directly. The experience left him unable to properly control his power without Roy's order field, and the immense Void Sun he encountered surpassed his expectations of what he could fight. 698 699 700

Convinced that the Void threatened all creation, Sargeras chose to form an army and destroy worlds with intelligent life before they could strengthen the Void Lords. He shattered Mardum Prison, released its demons, and accepted the Fel corruption he could otherwise have resisted, becoming the Dark Titan. The Nathrezim Dreadlords became his earliest supporters and reinforced his resolve to form the Burning Legion. 171 701 702

Sargeras later fought his former apprentice Aggramar, severely wounding him but allowing him to escape. He renamed his broken weapon Gorshalach as Gorribal, the Darkener, and prepared to strike against the Pantheon. 704 705

Seeking capable commanders for the Legion, Sargeras targeted Argus and its highly advanced Eredar civilization. He offered power and knowledge to Archimonde, Kil'jaeden, and Velen; Archimonde accepted, Kil'jaeden submitted out of fear, and Velen escaped with part of his people. Sargeras transformed Archimonde and Kil'jaeden into Eredar Demons, appointed them alongside Roy as Legion commanders, and converted most of Argus's population into demons. 628 709 714 715

He personally corrupted Argus's world-soul and transformed the planet into the Burning Legion's principal bastion. By forcibly awakening Argus as a “soul administrator,” Sargeras enabled the Legion to bind demon souls to the planet and accelerate their resurrection after death. 715 720

Sargeras became increasingly obsessed with Azeroth and its world-soul, viewing it as a potential weapon against the Void Lords. He attempted to enter Azeroth through the Well of Eternity during the War of the Ancients, but Broxigar wounded him and helped create the opening needed to close the portal. 732 744 750 751

Appearance

Sargeras's appearance changed radically after his fall, from a radiant Titan warrior into a colossal, flame-wreathed demon.

Sargeras is domineering, proud, and accustomed to acting without explanation or restraint. He initially treats Roy as a useful subordinate rather than an equal, despite relying on Roy's ability to travel through the Void. 702

His defining trait is his uncompromising conviction that the Void Lords must be stopped at any cost. This conviction drives him to abandon the Pantheon, embrace Fel corruption, and pursue the destruction of intelligent worlds as a means of preventing the Void Lords from growing stronger. 171 702 725

Fel corruption intensifies his anger, violence, and attraction to chaos and despair. After falling, he takes pleasure in watching invaded worlds descend into panic and disorder. 704 705

Despite his ruthlessness, Sargeras is deeply affected by the death of Titan kin. Witnessing a world-soul parasitized by an Old God left him emotionally devastated after he was forced to kill the newborn Titan. 696
