Nature and Hierarchy
Authority is a fundamental supernatural power associated with extraordinary advancement, combat, divine power, and conceptual phenomena. It is the “raw material” from which Divine Authority is refined. 377
| Power | Definition | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | A basic conceptual power that can be possessed, developed, simulated, or—in exceptional cases—transferred. | Multiple holders may possess similar or overlapping Authorities. 377 |
| Divine Authority | A refined combination of Authorities and godhood, comparable to a prepared potion made from Authority as its ingredients. | Developed by gods as an intermediate route toward Dominion. 377 378 |
| Dominion | A superior power embodying Mystery. | A complete Dominion has only one holder and cannot be shared. 377 |
Divine Authority is fundamentally weaker than true Dominion, but it allows gods to combine and develop Authorities toward a possible future monopoly over a Dominion. Modern wizard methods for pursuing Dominion were derived from divine research. 377
Relationship to Advancement
Authority is a defining threshold for high-level extraordinary beings.
| Path or being | Relationship with Authority |
|---|---|
| High-level creatures | Reaching the Third Tier normally grants Authority, giving a decisive advantage over beings below that level. 243 |
| Knights | A knight must condense an Authority before using it to evolve into the Third Tier. 213 |
| High Knights | Most awaken only one Authority naturally; active acquisition of additional Authorities is exceptionally rare. 206 |
| High Wizards | Normally obtain an Authority through their abilities and research upon advancement; they can develop Authority Spells to exploit it. 216 |
| God Seeds and Demon God Seeds | May possess Authorities before the usual high-level threshold due to their special origins. 31 74 |
| Constructs | Certain advanced constructs can awaken Authorities, while Authority plugins can grant specially designed Constructs multiple Authorities. 321 482 |
Use and Manifestation
Authority Spells
Authority Spells are wizard techniques that maximize an Authority’s effect. A developed spell can exert an Authority’s power several or even dozens of times beyond ordinary use. 242
- High Wizards can use Authority Spells to turn otherwise auxiliary or limited Authorities into formidable combat tools. 184 242
- An Authority Spell cannot grant power beyond what its user actually possesses. 224
- Some Authorities, particularly auxiliary ones, are difficult to express through spells because the required precision is extremely high. 405
- Isaac’s Eye of Omniscience is an unusual Authority Spell designed to release the full power of his higher-tier [Analysis] Authority. 405 429
Knightly Use
Knights generally use Authority through personal mastery, combat skills, physical cultivation, or Divine Spirit Forms rather than Authority Spells.
- Even an outstanding knight generally exerts Authority only according to their own degree of mastery. 242
- Knight Combat Skills can counter magical effects; Divine Advent can clear even effects originating from Authority. 192
- Knights who abandon flesh-and-blood purity through mechanical modification may suffer fluctuations in their Authority mastery. 253
Privilege Magic
Privilege Magic is a powerful spell category that imitates Authority without requiring the caster to possess the corresponding Authority.
- It is weaker and less mysterious than an Authority Spell, but far stronger than ordinary magic. 184
- High Wizards may use Privilege Magic as a route toward mastering its corresponding Authority. 184 216
- Isaac developed Privilege Magic based on [Gravity], [Electromagnetic Force], [Positive Infinitesimal], and [Immunity] as part of his Authority research. 216
- Privilege Magic remains vulnerable to sufficiently overwhelming force, because it requires Magic Power to sustain. 207
Acquisition and Transfer
| Method | Details |
|---|---|
| Natural awakening | The usual method for high-level creatures and many knights. 206 243 |
| Condensation during advancement | Knights condense Authority before their Third-Tier life evolution. 213 |
| Privilege Magic research | High Wizards can potentially use Authority-simulating magic to reach the corresponding Authority. 184 |
| God Seed cultivation | Isaac cultivated [Command Rat Swarm] in his Demon Rat through the special nature of a God Seed; the result was stated to be non-replicable by ordinary means. 31 |
| Outer God plunder | Mad Witches can obtain Authority from Outer Gods, though the process is dangerous. Isaac stole a portion of Authority from the Eternal Secret Star Master through a ritual contest. 180 321 |
| Authority Crystals | Isaac adapted Outer God transaction rituals to strip Authority from himself and condense it into transferable crystals. 417 421 |
Authority Crystal creation relies on ritual amplification; Isaac could not reproduce the process through spells, alchemy, or potions at his then-current level. 417 His later experiments indicated that many Authorities could potentially be sourced from high-level familiars, magical creatures, and golems. 417
Authority Crystals
Authority Crystals are condensed, transferable forms of Authority.
- Isaac created an Artificial Authority Crystal containing [Boundless] and gave it to Caesar. 420
- The crystal restored or recreated Caesar’s lost [Boundless] Authority, enabling it to become part of his advancement plan. 438 440
- Elemental crystals, such as [Flame], are relatively common in concept but remain useful for direct combat enhancement. 417
- Crystal-based transfer may enable Privilege Magic-derived Authorities to become shareable, a breakthrough Isaac considers capable of producing major Great Deeds. 396
Known Authorities
| Authority | Known holder(s) | Documented properties |
|---|---|---|
| [Analysis] | Isaac; certain alchemical constructs | “Pseudo-omniscience” that analyzes the essence of things, though it requires time rather than granting instant knowledge. 181 321 |
| [Positive Infinitesimal] | Isaac | The basis of Arrogant Turtle, an Authority Spell that can halt activity across a wide area; it has limited direct attack power. 224 253 |
| [Invisible Hand] | Lapis Lazuli | Creates four unobservable arms with strength comparable to the user; the arms move freely within magical-perception range. 74 |
| [Perfect Form] | Lapis Lazuli | Freely reshapes the body, including appearance, gender, and race; also supports her mimicry. 74 392 |
| [Adaptability] | Lapis Lazuli | Allows rapid adaptation to extreme environments and damage types; when combined with [Perfect Form], it can provide powerful temporary combat resistance. 392 |
| [Boundless] | Caesar; Morgan | A knight-oriented Authority associated with limitless cultivation potential and conceptual expansion. 213 439 |
| [Perfect Flesh] | Mechanical Cult High Knight | Strengthens the body toward a “perfect life form,” supports rapid recovery, and appears to resist other Authorities. 254 |
| [Blood Avatar] | Bloodflame Knight | Converts flesh and blood into crimson magic, enhancing its user or forming a massive Blood-Colored Divine General. 311 |
| [Infinity] | Infinite Demon God | Maximizes a Construct’s performance without damaging its systems and permits the use of additional Authority plugins. 482 |
| [Flame] | Infinite Demon God; Authority Crystal prototype | Provides direct offensive power; when enhanced through [Infinity], it temporarily rose to [Flame Dominion]. 417 482 |
| [Magic Power] | Infinite Demon God | Improves a Construct’s energy absorption, endurance, and energy-output ceiling. 482 |
| [Mind Control] | Meixiukante | One of the Imaginary Number God’s Divine Authorities, alongside [Virtual Data]. 341 |
Limitations and Countermeasures
- Authority does not guarantee victory. Arrogant Turtle failed to immobilize several Third-Tier opponents whose own powers burned away, offset, or removed its effect. 236
- Authorities can be resisted by other Authorities, specialized anti-Authority equipment, or overwhelming force. 254 426
- [Perfect Flesh] displayed resistance to Isaac’s [Positive Infinitesimal], while a standardized Shadow Assassin dagger could counter Authority Spells. 254 426
- Strong Authority use may demand close combat. Dimension Apostles Corrosion and Erosion had to fight at close range because their limited dimensional magic could not support wizard-style Authority use. 273
- A higher-tier Authority may need to remain sealed within a weaker holder; forcibly releasing a combat Authority beyond the user’s capacity risks soul destruction. 386
- Even [Analysis] cannot replace skill or understanding: it can identify complex openings, but a user may still be unable to execute the required response. 479
