Background / History

Shi Luo initially manufactured Kakuzu's public image by having Wu Wei create a Shadow Clone and transform it into a red-cloud-robed figure with Kakuzu's appearance. The deception was intended to lend credibility to the Sky Screen's portrayal of the Dawn Organization. Shi Luo later created Kakuzu and Hidan as real entities rather than relying on the clones. 47 66

Kakuzu has lived for more than a thousand years. His longevity and ability to recover from fatal injuries earned him, alongside Hidan, the “Immortal Duo” designation. 62 65

Two-Tails Operation

In the Sky Screen account of the operation, Kakuzu leads Hidan to the White Tiger Duke Mansion to force the guardian of the Dai and Zhu families, Two-Tails Matatabi, into revealing itself. He arranges for the Holy Spirit Cult to distract the Star Luo Empire and Shrek Academy, while also intending to claim the Sun Moon Empire's bounty on White Tiger Duke Dai Hao. 55

Kakuzu and Hidan overwhelm Dai Hao through alternating feints and attacks. Kakuzu exploits Hidan's exposed position as bait, appearing at close range to strike Dai Hao after the duke evades Hidan's scythe. 56

When Dai Hao and the White Tiger Duchess form the Hell White Tiger, Kakuzu releases masked entities from his body and combines Fire Style and Wind Style to unleash a sea of fire. After Matatabi enters the battle, Kakuzu deploys four masked monsters, each equipped with nine soul rings, and repeatedly coordinates with Hidan against the Tailed Beast. 57 59

Matatabi cuts Kakuzu in half, but his black tentacles reconstruct his body. His detached lower body later binds Matatabi, allowing Hidan to wound the immobilized Tailed Beast. Kakuzu then fires a five-attribute attack through Hidan's ritual formation, contributing to Matatabi's capture. 60 61

Afterward, Kakuzu kills Dai Hao by driving black tentacles into his heart, then asks Zetsu for the Dawn Organization's next target. 62

Sunset Forest Transaction

Kakuzu and Hidan arrive in Sunset Forest after securing three Immortal Herbs that had become Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts. Kakuzu recognizes Holy Spirit Cult leader Zhongli Wu immediately, implying that the Dawn Organization maintains extensive intelligence within the Sun Moon Empire. 78

He offers Zhongli Wu the three captured Soul Beasts and an escort back to the Sun Moon Empire for 1.5 billion Gold Soul Coins. Niu Tian attempts to buy the Dawn Organization's true objective, but Kakuzu refuses despite being tempted by the money, citing both the risk of nonpayment and his continuing interests within the organization. 79 80

During the ensuing battle, Kakuzu deploys Lightning Release and Wind Release against Niu Tian while Zetsu controls the battlefield with Wood Release. While Niu Tian is occupied, Kakuzu takes the 300 million Gold Soul Coin deposit that had been displayed during the negotiations. 81

Niu Tian's quasi-God-Level power destroys one of Kakuzu's hearts, but Kakuzu remains combat-capable. He, Hidan, and Zhongli Wu subsequently escape Sunset Forest using Zetsu's White Zetsu Cells, leaving Zetsu behind to confront Niu Tian. 82 85 86

Holy Spirit Cult Alliance

Kakuzu acts as the Dawn Organization's principal spokesman when meeting Zhongli Wu. He presents ancient records concerning the Sage of Six Paths, Moryo, the Ninja Sect, and the historical origins of Evil Soul Masters. 97 99 100

He reveals that the Dawn Organization intends to unseal Moryo and that Zhongli Wu is essential because the Evil Soul Master aura within the Holy Spirit Cult serves as Moryo's source power. Kakuzu proposes that the Holy Spirit Cult support Xu Tianran's war effort to distract the continent, while the Dawn Organization moves against One-Tail Shukaku. 102 103

Kakuzu frames the proposal as a mutually beneficial exchange: the Dawn Organization will claim the defeated One-Tail Shukaku, while the Holy Spirit Cult will receive Moryo's power after helping release the sealed monster. 103 104

The planned operation against Shukaku is later carried out by Sasori and Deidara, who successfully capture the One-Tail. 121 142

Kakuzu usually conceals most of his face beneath a black mask and hood, leaving only eerie dark-green eyes visible. He wears the Dawn Organization's black cloak patterned with red clouds. 47 52

Money is his strongest visible personal motivation. He pursues Dai Hao's bounty, immediately turns Zhongli Wu's predicament into a business opportunity, and tries to sell three captured Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts at an inflated bundled price. 55 78 79

His financial pursuits also make him opportunistic in combat. After Niu Tian leaves a 300 million Gold Soul Coin deposit exposed during the Sunset Forest confrontation, Kakuzu takes it while the quasi-God-Level opponent is distracted. 81

Despite this greed, Kakuzu does not sell out the Dawn Organization merely for wealth. He refuses Niu Tian's offer of two billion Gold Soul Coins and Clear Sky Sect protection, stating that he still has things he wants from the organization. Sasori later characterizes Kakuzu's desire for money as both a personal wish and a component of the organization's plans, rather than the Dawn Organization's core objective. 80 235
