Background / History

Yun Qingyang and his younger sister, Yun Lingyue, were taken toward Martial Soul City by Su Chengfeng shortly after awakening their Martial Souls. Qingyang’s Canglan Spear and Innate Level Nine Soul Power marked him as a prodigy, but Lingyue’s ominous blade Martial Soul caused fear and rejection at their awakening ceremony. Qingyang immediately took a protective role toward her. 112

At Martial Soul Academy, Qingyang encountered Zhang Qingxuan, who was using the identity of “Zhang Zhiwei.” Struck by the man’s presence, Qingyang became determined to take him as his master despite knowing that many talented candidates had been rejected before him. 113

He offered his jade pendant and endured public mockery to request apprenticeship. Zhang Qingxuan tested his judgment through a story concerning a master, disciple, and scholar; Qingyang’s answer—emphasizing a master’s duty to teach discernment and a disciple’s duty of gratitude—earned his acceptance. 114 115

Zhang Qingxuan initially accepted him as a nominal disciple and taught him foundational breathing and cultivation methods rather than immediately granting him his true inheritance. After observing Qingyang’s character over time, he revealed that the early method had been an introductory technique meant to establish Qingyang’s foundation and test his conduct. Qingyang subsequently received the more advanced cultivation method intended for him, while a second book was prepared for Yun Lingyue’s future training. 116 118

When Zhang Qingxuan revealed his true identity and reputation, Qingyang was overwhelmed by inferiority and questioned whether he was worthy of being the disciple of such a powerful figure. Nevertheless, Lu Xueqi’s example and Zhang Qingxuan’s teachings strengthened his ambition to become a true personal disciple. 118 123

During his academy years, Qingyang suffered a minor injury after others plotted against him out of envy. Once Zhang Qingxuan learned the culprit’s identity, he confronted the responsible family and defeated its intervening experts, giving Qingyang firsthand confidence in his master’s willingness to protect his disciples. 123

Qingyang accompanied Lu Xueqi and Yun Lingyue to Martial Soul City for the Five-Year Agreement between Lu Xueqi and Bibi Dong. There, Tang Hao challenged him because of his connection to Zhang Qingxuan. Qingyang fought the higher-level Soul Grandmaster tactically, eventually defeating him and enduring Tang Zhen’s attempted intervention until Li Yuntian arrived. 123 128 129

He was badly injured during a later attack by remnants of families associated with the Fallen Soul Masters. After shielding Yun Lingyue and refusing to abandon the Martial Soul City guards, Qingyang burned his Martial Soul origin to continue fighting. The attackers attempted to self-destruct around him, but Xiao Bai arrived and used her “Ice and Snow World” to eliminate the remaining enemies. 136 140 141

Qingyang and Yun Lingyue were left severely injured. His Martial Soul origin was exhausted and his meridians were shattered, while even Elder Ye’s Inversion True Qi could not restore the depleted origin. Qingyang nevertheless remained concerned for his sister rather than himself. 141

Zhang Qingxuan first healed Qingyang’s meridians, which became tougher than before, but the loss of his Martial Soul still left him unable to absorb soul rings. Qingyang questioned the purpose of continued cultivation, only for his master to insist that he resume training. While Zhang Qingxuan traveled to retaliate against the factions responsible, Victini supervised Qingyang’s cultivation and forced him to persevere despite his discouragement. 142 147 152

Zhang Qingxuan later restored his origin through an ancient secret method discovered in ancient ruins, allowing Qingyang to reshape his Martial Soul and return to cultivation. Qingyang emerged stronger than before, overturning the judgment that his future as a Soul Master had been destroyed. 141 163

Three years after establishing Celestial Master Mansion, Zhang Qingxuan bestowed his own surname upon Qingyang and named him his successor, also granting him the Golden Light Incantation. 158

Following his restoration, Zhang Qingyang became the Celestial Master Mansion’s senior brother. He oversaw the entry trial of Xu Lanxing, Ye Qinghuan, Li Qingfeng, and Bai Ziyao, defeating the four working together within the time it took to burn one incense stick before restoring their Soul Power through a mysterious method. 161

After winning the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament with Bibi Dong, Zhang Qingyang continued cultivating at Dragon Tiger Mountain. Two years later, Zhang Qingxuan ordered him to descend the mountain and gain practical experience, an assignment Qingyang regarded with undisguised excitement. 164 175

During his travels, Qingyang met Fang Ningxue, who identified him from his distinctive Daoist robes and her knowledge of the Celestial Master Mansion’s disciples. He subsequently recognized the exceptional potential of her Body Martial Soul rather than dismissing it as useless. 181 182

Qingyang subsequently disappeared without contacting the Celestial Master Mansion for half a year. Zhang Qingxuan divined that he had encountered an extraordinary fortuitous opportunity and left to search for the remaining Innate Divine Gold rather than wait indefinitely. According to his master, the location could not be approached without immense karma and fortune, making an ordinary rescue expedition unnecessary and impractical. Qingyang eventually returned after obtaining a Hundred Thousand Year Frost Dragon’s sacrifice, a hundred-thousand-year soul ring, and two hundred-thousand-year soul bones. 226 229 232

Upon returning, Qingyang was scolded by Yun Lingyue for failing to send word. He learned that his master had already departed and that several junior disciples had been injured during improper cultivation. He later participated in judging the disciples’ qualities, identifying Li Qingfeng as the most promising because of his clarity and ability to weigh circumstances. 232 271

Yun Lingyue also explained that the junior disciples needed a warning against allowing obligations to their families and hometowns to displace their pursuit of the Dao. After Qingyang introduced Fang Ningxue, Lingyue directed him to arrange accommodation for her and then proceed to the back mountain’s main hall, where Zhang Qingxuan had left the Celestial Master’s inheritance for him to assume the position. 232

By the time he was addressed as “Senior Brother Sect Master,” Qingyang was conducting sect affairs from the seat of honor. He rebuffed visiting representatives of major factions, judging their proposed visits and exchanges to be attempts to obtain Dragon Tiger Mountain’s cultivation resources. When Ye Qinghuan worried that his conduct might create enemies, he firmly defended his decision. 312

Qingyang later received an invitation to Qian Xunji’s wedding, scheduled for half a month afterward. He planned to bring three companions and then take them to Sea God Island to gain benefits and improve through divine examinations. Personality

Qingyang is determined, respectful, and deeply protective of his younger sister. His first instinct in threatening situations is to place himself between Lingyue and danger, a trait that ultimately led him to sacrifice his Martial Soul origin for her. 112 128 141

He is neither blindly reckless nor easily provoked. During his fight with Tang Hao, he refused to trade blows on unfavorable terms, used movement to evade the Clear Sky Hammer, and only shifted to an aggressive counterattack when an opening appeared. 129

Though he admires Zhang Qingxuan intensely, Qingyang struggles with feelings of inadequacy after learning his master’s true identity and witnessing Lu Xueqi’s overwhelming talent. He nevertheless continues to pursue the status of a true personal disciple. 118 123

Qingyang is strongly loyal to Zhang Qingxuan and reacts sharply when an opponent insults his master. Tang Hao’s attempt to provoke him by disparaging Zhang Qingxuan caused Qingyang to abandon his restrained approach and launch a decisive counterattack. 129

After recovering his strength, Qingyang developed greater confidence in his place as the Celestial Master Mansion’s senior brother. He was pleased to no longer be the weakest member of his master’s household and calmly tested new disciples who sought entry into the sect. 161

Although his master’s order to leave Dragon Tiger Mountain was intended to broaden his worldly experience, Qingyang welcomed it as an opportunity for freedom and adventure rather than treating it as a hardship. 175
