Background / History

Piccolo joins Son Goku in rescuing Gohan from Raditz, initially appearing with his left arm severed during the battle. He and Goku ultimately kill Raditz with a combined Special Beam Cannon after Gohan gives them an opening 1 2.

Though still cold and proud, Piccolo agrees to accompany Goku and Gohan to King Kai's Planet after Gohan warns that Goku will otherwise leave him far behind. There, he trains under tenfold gravity, learns the Kaio-ken, and returns to Earth substantially stronger 2 4 5.

During the Saiyan conflict, Piccolo incinerates Nappa's Saibamen, defeats Nappa, and follows Gohan to confront Turles and the Tree of Might. He is severely injured while holding off Turles's fruit-enhanced subordinates, but continues fighting through the pain with Kaio-ken 6 7.

On Namek, Piccolo is angered by the deaths of his fellow Namekians. Nail voluntarily assimilates with him so that Piccolo can protect their surviving people; Piccolo vows to defend Namek for as long as he lives 16 20. He later fights beside Goku to kill King Cold 21.

After Slug is captured, Piccolo initially refuses to assimilate with him out of fear that Slug's absolute evil will corrupt his own personality. The Grand Elder purifies Slug first, allowing Piccolo to absorb him safely and inherit part of Slug's immortality-granted longevity 23.

Piccolo later assists Gohan against Bojack, joining him in a combined Special Beam Cannon that kills the Galaxy Bandit. He then fuses with Old Kami, while Dende succeeds Kami as Earth's new guardian, and spends two years training Gohan relentlessly in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 26 27.

After the Cell conflict, Gohan entrusts Piccolo with reading Dr. Gero's memories and passing the android research to Bulma 43. Piccolo subsequently remains on Earth to teach and support Dende while Gohan, Goku, Vegeta, and Broly train on Beerus's Planet 52.

During Baby's invasion, Piccolo is among the fighters manipulated by evil energy. He is later found unconscious and injured at the Lookout, with Baby confirmed to have taken control of him 55 56.

Appearance

Piccolo is a green Namekian with a stern, imposing presence. He is first seen in combat with his left arm severed, yet remains active in the battle against Raditz 1.

Personality

Piccolo begins as a proud and emotionally distant former Demon King who still entertains ambitions of ruling Earth. His drive to surpass Goku is a decisive reason for accepting Gohan's proposal to train under King Kai 2 4.

His actions increasingly prioritize protection over conquest. He worries about Gohan's safety, fights alongside the Z Fighters against repeated threats, and refuses Slug's power until he is certain it will not compromise his morality 3 23. He also accepts Old Kami's fusion despite their difficult history because it is necessary to protect Earth 27.

Though harsh as a teacher, Piccolo supports Gohan's goals. He trains him without restraint in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and later participates in boxing matches to help Gohan bring one billion Zeni home to Chi-Chi 27 28.

Kaio-ken

Piccolo learns King Kai's energy-amplification technique during his training on King Kai's Planet.

• Son Gohan — Ally, student-like companion, and frequent sparring partner. Gohan persuades Piccolo to train under King Kai, encourages his assimilation with Slug, and trains with him for two years in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 2 23 27 28.
• Son Goku — Former enemy turned trusted comrade. They cooperate to kill Raditz and King Cold, and repeatedly fight together as Z Fighters 2 21.
