History

Saiyan Invasion

After Raditz’s death, Vegeta dismisses him as useless but is intrigued by the report that Son Goku’s four-year-old son possesses a battle power of 2,000. He and Nappa set course for Earth, intending to avenge Raditz and recruit Gohan as a replacement. 2

On Earth, Vegeta remains composed while Nappa tests the defenders with Saibamen. He considers Piccolo’s 7,500 battle power beneath his concern, relying on his own 18,000 power and the option of a Great Ape transformation. 6 Nappa is killed by Piccolo, while Vegeta is defeated by Son Goku’s fourfold Kaio-ken before he can transform. Goku nevertheless spares him and sends him away in a space pod. 6 7

Namek Campaign

Driven by revenge but wary of Earth’s unexpectedly powerful fighters, Vegeta targets Namek because it is Piccolo’s homeworld. He massacres Namekians, discovers the Dragon Balls, and seeks immortality as a means to regain power and take revenge. 9

Nail nearly kills him, but Vegeta escapes and later returns to Namek after recovering. His power rises to over 30,000, yet he is alarmed when he senses fifteen auras stronger than himself. 9 16 Faced with Frieza, Cooler, King Cold, Slug, and the Z Fighters, he hides nearby in hopes of eventually claiming the Dragon Balls. 17

Vegeta witnesses Gohan become a Super Saiyan and reacts with terror, rage, and disbelief that a low-class Saiyan’s son achieved the legendary form first. 19 After the conflict, Gohan persuades him to travel to Earth by promising that the reason behind the others’ rapid growth—and a path to Super Saiyan—can be found there. 21

Training on Earth and the Cell Conflict

The Grand Elder unlocks Vegeta’s potential on Namek, though Vegeta remains jealous of Gohan’s far greater latent power. 22 Back on Earth, he trains in Bulma’s 300-times gravity chamber and later enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. 27 28 He successfully becomes a Super Saiyan, but Future Cell nearly kills him before Piccolo intervenes. 29 34

During the battle against Cell’s nine Cell Jrs., Vegeta is overpowered by one of the creatures but refuses to back down. Trunks joins him, and father and son fight the Cell Jr. together. 38 Humiliated and determined to defeat Cell, Vegeta sets aside his strongest objection to cooperating with Goku and requests the Metamoran Fusion Dance. 39

The resulting Gogeta overwhelms Cell, but Vegeta and Goku separate before Gogeta can finish his Big Bang Attack. Their transformed state and excessive energy expenditure shorten the fusion’s duration. 40

Gods, Angels, and Baby

Vegeta retains a traumatic fear of Beerus from childhood, when he saw the God of Destruction humiliate King Vegeta and was personally immobilized by Beerus’s aura. 46 He anxiously helps Bulma prepare for Beerus’s arrival on Earth. 49

Although he participates in the Super Saiyan God ritual, Vegeta fails to transform because his strength is insufficient. 49 He later travels to Beerus’s planet with Gohan, Goku, and Broly to train under Whis, seeking power beyond Beerus. 52

Personality

Vegeta is intensely proud of his status as the Saiyan prince and struggles to accept being surpassed by Goku, Gohan, or other Saiyans. His conviction that no Saiyan could be stronger than him is shattered repeatedly, producing anger, jealousy, and an obsessive drive to train. 5 19 25

He is also calculating when survival demands it. Rather than openly confronting the overwhelming forces on Namek, he hides and waits for an opportunity to benefit from their conflict. 17 His early actions remain ruthless—he targets Namekians for revenge and kills them while pursuing the Dragon Balls. 9

Despite his pride, Vegeta can cooperate when necessary. He follows Gohan’s group to Earth to pursue greater strength, trains alongside Goku and Broly under Whis, and ultimately initiates fusion with Goku after Cell humiliates him. 21 39 52 His concern for Bulma during Baby’s invasion also shows that his loyalties have extended beyond his former Frieza Force service. 57
