Background / History

Raditz and King Kai’s Training

Goku is first seen fighting his brother Raditz alongside Piccolo after Raditz kidnaps Gohan. Piccolo kills Raditz with the Special Beam Cannon, but Raditz’s warning of two stronger Saiyans forces Goku to prepare for another invasion. 2

He agrees to travel with Gohan and Piccolo to King Kai’s Planet, obtaining Chi-Chi’s reluctant permission to bring Gohan along. The trio crosses Snake Way and trains under tenfold gravity, with Goku learning King Kai’s Kaio-ken technique. 3 4

After six months of training, Goku’s power rises to 10,000. He returns to Earth to face Vegeta, ultimately using Kaio-ken ×4 to overcome Vegeta’s Galick Gun. Rather than kill him, Goku allows Vegeta to leave, hoping for a future rematch. 5 7

Namek and Yardrat

Goku travels to Namek with the Z Fighters amid the conflict involving Frieza, Cooler, King Cold, and Slug. Although his Kaio-ken ×20 is insufficient to match King Cold alone, he joins the battle so Gohan will not have to fight by himself; Piccolo later reinforces him after assimilating Nail. 19 20

Following the Namek conflict, Goku travels with the group to Yardrat to learn Instant Transmission. He completes his Super Saiyan transformation there and returns in time to confront Bojack’s crew. 23 25

Android and Cell Conflicts

By the android crisis, Goku has mastered Full Power Super Saiyan. He and Gohan use Instant Transmission to reinforce the other Z Fighters when multiple android attacks occur simultaneously. 29 30

During Future Cell’s challenge, Goku breaks through to Super Saiyan 2. After Vegeta is humiliated by a Cell Jr., Goku accepts Vegeta’s proposal to use the Metamoran Fusion Dance; their fusion, Gogeta, easily overwhelms Cell. 37 39

Beerus and Angel Training

Goku becomes one of only two Saiyans to successfully attain Super Saiyan God through the righteous-Saiyan ritual, alongside Gohan. The two challenge Beerus together, but the God of Destruction defeats them with ease, exposing the gap between their divine forms and his power. 49 50

He later trains on Beerus’s Planet with Gohan, Vegeta, and Broly under Whis. Whis teaches them to contain their ki, improve their reactions, and move without conscious thought—the foundation needed for Ultra Instinct. 53 54

Personality

Goku is driven by a Saiyan love of combat and treats overwhelmingly strong enemies as opportunities to improve. He eagerly seeks fights with opponents such as Vegeta, the androids, and Beerus, even when he knows he is outmatched. 7 20 30 50

Despite this battle-focused nature, he is protective of his allies and especially of Gohan. He joins the fight against King Cold despite the power gap because he does not want to leave his son fighting alone. 20

He also believes Earth’s defenders should not depend entirely on gods or outside saviors. After Cell’s defeat, he states that humanity must continue striving to become stronger through its own efforts. 43
