Background / History

Misdreavus lived alone on the back mountain near Rustboro Academy. Her appearances had helped give the area a haunted reputation. Drawn by Roy’s Ghost Power, she visited his window but did not enter without permission. When Roy first encountered her in Flutter Mane form, she pursued and nearly attacked him before reverting to Misdreavus, with no memory of what had happened 38 39.

She grew close to Roy and asked to become his Pokémon. During a visit to her cave home, the Ghost Soul Slate triggered another transformation. Misdreavus fought Flutter Mane for control to keep Roy safe, but a Spirit World Dusknoir took her away. Roy followed and rescued her; afterward, both Misdreavus and Flutter Mane accepted him as their Trainer 58 62 63 67.

Roy later obtained Booster Energy and supplied the Ghost Power needed to complete a controlled transformation. Because her resulting Flutter Mane form was unusual, he presented it publicly as Bond Evolution. Its debut at the Edge Cup surprised spectators and researchers alike 143 144 246 247 299.

Appearance

Misdreavus is a small, floating Ghost-type Pokémon. Her Flutter Mane form is larger and retains the red orbs associated with her Misdreavus form 37 38.

  • Red orbs — hang around her neck; they helped Duskull recognize her as the shadow outside Roy’s window 38.
  • Eyes during the early transformation — red and yellow pupils appeared when Misdreavus and Flutter Mane contested control 63.
  • Accessories — she has worn Wise Glasses and enjoyed posing in them 98 143.

Personality

Misdreavus is affectionate, sociable, and eager to make friends. Having spent much of her life alone, she was delighted when Roy spoke with her and introduced her to Litwick and Duskull. She is also mischievous: she hides Roy’s belongings, poses for attention, and tries to scare Professor Oak 38 39 104 299.

She is protective of Roy and his companions. She resisted Flutter Mane’s early urge to attack him, later shielded a girl and Gardevoir from hunters, and readily took responsibility for helping the timid Mimikyu settle into the team 63 168 493.

Abilities & Skills

Flutter Mane transformation

  • Initially occurred without Misdreavus’s control and left her unable to recall what she had done 38 63.
  • Booster Energy and Roy’s Ghost Power later let her transform while remaining herself. The first controlled transformation lasted about ten minutes because she lacked the energy to sustain it longer 143 144.
  • Flutter Mane gains a Fairy typing while retaining Levitate. Roy confirmed the Fairy typing when Dreepy’s Draco Meteor failed to harm her; after she reverted, a remaining meteor struck her Misdreavus form 143 144.
  • She can choose an enhancement from Booster Energy, including Speed or Special Attack. Her first Speed-enhanced trial was so fast that she crashed into a tree 144.

Ranged attacks

  • Can fire numerous small Shadow Balls rapidly, varying their timing and speed to restrict an opponent’s movement 129 137.
  • Uses Draining Kiss to damage opponents while replenishing stamina; her Flutter Mane form produces a substantially larger attack 116 144.
  • Has used Protect to withstand Drakloak’s Dragon Ascent, though the impact cracked her shield 199.

Communication and teamwork

  • Relays Pokémon speech to Roy, including information from a frightened Mankey 69 498.
  • Uses Mind Communication with Roy in battle, allowing him to warn her of an opponent’s position 290.

Equipment / Items

  • Booster Energy — enables her controlled Flutter Mane transformation alongside Roy’s Ghost Power 143 144.
  • Wise Glasses — glasses she enjoyed wearing; replaced by Booster Energy when it entered her body 98 143.

Relationships

  • Roy — her Trainer and partner. His Ghost Power first attracted her, and his rescue from the Spirit World earned the trust of both her and Flutter Mane 38 67.
  • Duskull / Dusclops — initially frightened of her Flutter Mane form; later a teammate whose pranks on Mimikyu she counters 39 498.
  • Litwick / Lampent — one of the first Ghost-type Pokémon she befriended 39.
  • Dreepy / Dragapult — friend and training rival; she outpaced him after transforming, and they continued to race as he grew stronger 129 144 372.
  • Mimikyu — timid newcomer whom Roy asked Misdreavus to befriend and look after 493 498.
  • Agatha’s Mismagius — helps improve Misdreavus’s move proficiency through training 386.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Safari Zone defense — shields a girl and her Gardevoir, then follows Roy’s instructions to attack a hunter directly. She reaches Pseudo-Elite Four level after the battle 168 171.
  • Edge Cup — reveals Flutter Mane publicly as a Bond Evolution and sweeps Cade’s team, using moves including Nasty Plot, Icy Wind, Charge Beam, and Dazzling Gleam 246 250.
  • Later battles — defeats Hunter J’s Salamence in Flutter Mane form, but Giovanni’s faster Beedrill outmaneuvers her 197 198 290.
  • S.S. Anne — volunteers to face Dragalge and defeats him with a restrained Dazzling Gleam after Roy asks her to go easy 428 429.
